7. Danger
After successfully walking through a flock of vultures, they walked out of the forest and had the arc in their sights. Everyone whooped and cheered, happy they were almost there. But then Sid took one step and was met with erupting steam in his face.
Sid's scream was covered by even more and bigger eruptions of hot water as the ground started crumbling again. Kiara recoiled, crediting the shock in her body to be reaction to the geyser field.
As the field seemed to settle, Manny marched ahead, but was met with a geyser again.
"Manny, get back!" Kiara called him. "It's a minefield out there."
"There's only one way to go," Manny countered, "straight through."
"Straight through?" Ellie challenged him. "We'd like to keep the fur on our bodies, thank you. We'll head back and go around; that's safer."
"No, no." Diego cut in. "There's no time. The damn will burst before we make it. We'll drown."
Kiara found his voice grating, at least that's what she thought was bothering her. "If we go through this, we'll be blown to bits," she nodded at the minefield, reminding him of the scalding geysers.
Diego groaned. "We're cats. We can sense danger. We can guide us all through the field."
Kiara matched his frustration. "What part of dangerous is lost on you?!" For some reason, her instinct forbade her to go through the minefield.
"Don't tell me you think you're a possum now. We're going forward!"
"We go back!"
"Forward!" Manny defended his friend.
"Back!" Ellie agreed with Kiara.
"Can I say something?"
"No!" Three voices yelled at Sid.
Kiara used Sid's distraction to head off her way. Ellie followed soon after.
The boys on the other hand weaved their way through the minefield, with Manny slowing them down just a little when he accidentally passed out. However, they successfully joined the other mammals and went looking for their better half through the crowd. The vultures' commentary on the traffic wasn't helping.
"I don't see them anywhere!" Manny shouted to Diego.
"Maybe they're already on board!" Diego replied as they were running out of time.
Unfortunately, they were not on board. They were behind, the ark in their sights. They were almost going to make it until rocks started falling, and caved the mammoth in, with just enough space for Crash and Eddie to run out for help. They found Manny and brought him and Diego to the rescue, but unfortunately the water was rising exponentially fast.
Fighting through the water and the two dangers that came with it, Manny managed to save Ellie and Diego saved Crash, Eddie, and Sid. They all managed to jump on to a solid rock, but it seemed to be the last piece of land around for miles, and the water was still rising. Off in the distance, they saw the ark hit the water. As the water rose, the smaller animals climbed on top of the mammoths. Sid and Crash were on Manny, and Diego and Eddie were on Ellie.
"Hey. Didn't we have two cats?"
Diego worriedly looked towards the ark.
Kiara had sprinted ahead, but her body was slowing her down. As the water began rising, she climbed up onto a tree, hopping her way to the ark. Thankfully the last tree she was on was on a hill, otherwise it would have crushed under pressure from the water. Instead, it floated on top.
Kiara hung on to it for dear life, but was beginning to pass out from exhaustion. She couldn't hold on for longer, but then the water started receding, and Kiara let herself at the mercy of the flow.
The tree swayed on top of the water, slowly going down to the ground. The waves pushed it into a cave and deposited the sleeping cat onto the solid ground. The trunk got stuck on its way out, hiding her from the world.
