Chapter V
The wind was freezing Catherine's ears off and she wondered how she could be cold in her winter coat while mister Choke seemed perfectly fine in his rags. They had been walking for hours at a fast pace. Kylo wanted to get into the wild as soon as possible, he didn't want to risk getting in touch with the police. Sure, he could handle them fine, but that wouldn't change things for the better. So, avoiding human contact overall seemed the best idea and soon they found themselves surrounded by pine trees and snow.
"Did we bring any food? A lighter maybe?" Catherine had started to whine about food and fire. Kylo was still ignoring her, thinking about her use of the force. Could she read my mind too? No, then she wouldn't be having all those... odd thoughts about me, I suppose. Kylo tripped over a stick. He gestured swiftly and the stick sprung up a couple of meters in the air, when it came down, it halted just a few centimetres above the ground and then it snapped in two. Catherine had seen it happen and was now feeling more afraid of Kylo. If he was angered so much by a stick, what would be her fate? She swallowed thickly as she passed the broken stick.
"Where we going?" She managed to sputter. They'd been plowing through the snow for over a day now. Her legs started to feel numb and her fingers were on the verge of turning black. "I think my fingers are dying."
Kylo stopped moving at an instant. "If you don't shut up, I swear.." He remembered her use of the force. He'd felt so vulnerable at the ease with which she'd lifted him up in the air. He was the one making threats, but was it even of any use? She can't be a spy. Or she's a really good one. But then how come I didn't sense the force with her? No one can lie that well. Right?
Sunken into his thoughts, Kylo continued walking for another hour or two. Catherine started to slow down and almost lost him a couple of times. "Just.. let... me rest.. for like, ... an hour?" She wheezed. Kylo pointed towards what seemed to be an abandoned hut. He continued walking. I guess he wants to hike there and rest. Catherine thought. Why are we even going to the north pole? God, I've never even asked him. What if he's going to murder me there? The train of thoughts kept Catherine busy for a while, and when it stopped, they'd arrived at the small hut.
"Great. There's some wood inside, I'll leave you to making a fire." Kylo said, handing Catherine two logs. He'd wrapped his scarf around his face and neck, so only his eyes were visible. God, such pretty eyes. I wish he'd play-choke me. Catherine took the logs and put them on the ground. "Kylo, I don't have a lighter on me. You don't happen to have one, do you? Do they exist where you're from?" She'd build up some strength again and her big mouth was showing.
What happened next, shocked Catherine to the bone. Kylo reached for the bundle on his right hip, where it'd hung ever so concealed and never attracted any attention. A silver cylinder came out of a piece of cloth and the second it was into Kylo's hand, a bright red laser shot out.
"Fucking fucksies..." Catherine whispered, her voice gone along with her courage. He'd had that weapon on him all the time. She'd nearly choked him and he had been carrying that weapon. He could've killed her. He could kill her now. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
But Kylo never pointed the lightsaber at Catherine. He simply touched the blocks of wood and set them on fire. "Now at least we can warm up a little." He grinned at his own mischief. His eyes didn't leave the newly started fire. His hand raised and it looked like he was picking up something from the air. More logs came floating through the air, landing in a perfect heap next to where Catherine was sitting. Her eyes moved towards his. Who is this man!! Why is he both frightening and exciting? His eyes met hers for a brief moment. Okay, why does it still feel like he's reading my mind? A grin formed on his face. What... But before she could begin to ask him, they heard a sound. The sound of a wild animal. Catherine jumped to her feet and wanted to scream for help, but Kylo moved his hand and not the faintest sound came from her mouth. He drew his lightsaber again and stepped away from the hut. The wind started to pick up and soon it would be dark. There was a howling, but Catherine couldn't make out whether that was the wind or perhaps a wolf. She pulled her knees up and wrapped her arms around them. Fire scares wild animals, right? Or that laser thing will. Around ten minutes later he came back. He had something thrown over his back. Is that.... Before Catherine could give herself an answer, it presented itself by her feet. The corpse of a wolf. "Fucking shitballs. What the hell?!" She yelled and nearly fell backwards.
"Relax, will you? Be happy that we have some food for tonight. And one predator less." Kylo coolly reminded her of the fact that they'd forgotten to bring food with them.
Not much later the wolf was skinned and organs taken out and he was roasting above the fire. It wasn't much meat, but Catherine dared no to make a comment. She could easily, too easily, picture her own body above that fire.
"What's next, Kylo? Why are we going up north?" She eventually asked. The past few days felt like a blur, like a dream, but slowly she'd started to realise that this was actually happening, whatever this was.
"I need a magnetic field for my plate to function. I'll call my ship and they'll take me home." He answered.
- "What about me?"
"What about you?"
- "... Kylo, you're not going to leave me behind, are you?"
A deep unrest started to settle in Catherine's stomach. If he would leave her behind on the fucking north pole of all places, she'd be well fucked. I wish I'd been fucked. Catherine thought about her dreary life back in London. Well, at least I'll be dead in a place where no one will ever find me. Though that thought didn't give her much reassurance.
"Oh right, let me just take you onto my ship and take you to my home planet." Kylo mockingly said.
Catherine's eyes lit up. "Yes, oh yes! Please take me with you! You haven't seen a lot of my life, but I've lived in London for three years and this is the most contact I've had with anyone. I have no one to go back to." Kylo frowned. "And yes, I know that's pathetic.." Catherine was nearly out breath from the excitement of leaving this planet.
"I can't take you." He replied, emotionless. "Here's some meat."
"Thanks..." She took the meat from his hands and her thoughts started to drift off.
- Ask him again to take you.
Catherine's heart felt like it sank a few centimetres. Who had just talked to me?! Catherine thought. There had been an involuntary voice in her had, it created a thought she hadn't had. How was that even possible? To have a voice in your head that doesn't belong to you? Am I becoming schizophrenic?! What's happening to me?
"Please take me with you." She decided to follow the voice's advice. What did she have to lose?
