↳ FOUR; "ARE WE THE GOONIES NOW?"
CHAPTER FOUR
"ARE WE THE GOONIES NOW?"
"MOVE IT LADY!" Reece hollers as skates past a woman who looked to be in her mid-40's. She blew her a kiss and added a wink when the woman glared at her— Leaving the woman shocked and uncomfortable.
Coach Bombay recently recruited Fulton Reed to join the district 5 team (he was the big kid that threw the Hawks in the trash that one time). The only problem is he can't skate, and skating is pretty important in hockey. You can't just crawl, Reece would know— she tried it at her first game when she was six. So, now they're rollerblading through the mall, and it doesn't feel very legal, but Reece doesn't really care.
The Parker girl laughed loudly when she saw Fulton fumble down the stairs, knocking a woman into the fountain in the process. "Nice one, dude!" She laughed as she skated by him, quickly catching up with Averman who was near the front. "Oh those are cute!" She sighed as she came to a stop in front of a shoe store, her gaze set on a pair of brown boots. Just as she was about to skate into the shop and try to grab them and run for it, someone grabbed her arm pulling her along.
"Yeah, let's not get you arrested today." Averman says, pulling his friend along, knowing exactly what was going on in her mind.
"Come on, man! They were cute! That chubby security guard wouldn't be able to catch me even if I didn't have skates on!"
°°°
"The Ducks? We're the Ducks?" Jesse gapped at Bombay, looking at him like he was an idiot. Bombay looked between the green jersey in his hand and back towards his team, annoyed with they're lack of appreciation.
"Man, what brain-dead jerk came up with that name?" Peter laughed.
"As a matter a fact, I did," Coach Bombay announced proudly. "I didn't have a choice. We're being sponsored."
"By who— Donald and Daisy?" Averman joked.
"Hey, you don't want to be the ducks? You'd rather be District 5— some stupid number?"
"Better then some stupid animal," Peter shot back.
"I'll have you know Peter, that the Duck is one of the most noble, agile, and intelligent creatures of the animal kingdom." Coach explains.
"Wow. You did you research, good for you." Reece mocked, slowly clapping her hands in a sarcastic manner, a smirk on her face as she does so.
"But they're wimpy," Connie complained.
"They don't even have teeth!" Guy says, agreeing with Connie.
"Either does my grandma, yet she still punched the mailman for checking out our mom. I, for one like the name," Ty shrugs.
Reece laughed loudly at the memory of their Grandma punching the mailman, Frank. It was a good day for her, she never liked Frank, he always freaked her out. "Yeah, I like the name too. Count me in."
"See, Reece and Ty get it!" Coach Bombay praised. "Most hockey players don't have teeth either. Have you guys ever seen a flock of ducks flying in perfect formation? It's beautiful. Pretty awesome, the way they all stick together. Ducks never say die."
"Are we the Goonies now?"
"Ever seen a duck fight? No way. Why?" Coach Bombay continued, ignoring Reece's comment. "Because the other animals are afraid. They know if they mess with one duck, they gotta deal with the whole flock."
He removes his coat to reveal his own Ducks jersey. "I'm proud to be a duck and I'd be proud to fly with any one of you. So, how about it? Who's a duck?"
It's silent for a moment until Fulton agrees first, "I'll be a duck."
The twins stand up, "I'll be a duck."
"Yeah," Charlie nods with a grin, "me too."
Once everyone's agreed, they go to pick out their jerseys. Reece and Ty pull out two jerseys that say Parker on the back. "Which is which?" They both question at the same time, freaking Gordon out a bit. He's still getting use to the twins.
"Just put one on!"
Reece shrugs before putting on her jersey that said Parker on the back and had the number 14. And her brother had the number 13.
"Now we're the ducks!" Coach Bombay shouts.
"Yeah!" The Ducks cheered.
"The Mighty Ducks!"
"Yeah!"
"What are we!"
"THE DUCKS!"
°°°
TODAY THE DUCKS WERE PLAYING AGAINST THE CARDINALS. Now in their new jerseys, you could tell they had a little boost of confidence. For practise before the game, they chucked around a football— Reece honestly didn't get it, but she learned to just go along with it. Makes her life easier.
"Every time you get the puck, you're the quarterback. Make eye contact with the receiver." Coach Bombay instructed, cringing when Ty chucked the football a little to hard at Peter, causing the boy to go flying backwards and land on his butt. "Talk to him, let him know what's coming. Come on guys! This isn't the Library, talk to each other! Also, Ty stop hurting people."
"No promises," Ty smirked.
Coach made the team skate off the ice as Fulton started to practice. Reece's mouth fell open in shock as she watched how hard Fulton could shoot. Even though not all of them where going in the net, she new that one hit to the head and she'd be unconscious for a month.
"Holy sh-" Reece started to say as a puck hit the window, shattering the glass, but got cut off by Charlie who put a hand over her mouth. "-it" Ty finished for his twin and smirked at Charlie when he gave him an 'are you serious' look. They all watch as one of the pucks goes flying into the crowd, towards where the Parker family sat. Reece snorted when a puck hit the popcorn bucket out of Betty's hands— Betty now looked really pissed.
"Come on asshole! That was 5 bucks!"
"Sorry!" Couch Bombay shouted sheepishly, before looking at the twins. "She yours?"
"Yeah! How'd you know?"
"Lucky guess."
°°°
"ALL RIGHT! LET'S FORGET THE PAST. We lost a few games, tough." Coach Bombay started, "that was district 5, now, we're the Ducks."
"Yeah!" The Ducks cheered.
"And the Ducks are undefeated!"
"All Right!"
"Quack! Quack! Quack!" Coach starts to chant. Reece grinned before joining in on the chant along with the rest of the team. "Quack! Quack!" They all put their hands in the middle, "GO DUCKS!"
The game was going good so far. They were only losing by two. Usually it's worse, much worse. Reece was playing forward left wing, her brother right wing, and Jesse centre. Ty got the puck as the 3 of them skated towards the Cardinals goal. Ty passed it to Reece who then passed it to Jesse, just dodging a Cardinal. Jesse gets control the puck and scores, making the score 1-2.
Reece and Ty are first to skate over to Jesse, pulling him into a hug, which is quickly joined by the rest of the team— Celebrating their first goal of the season.
°°°
"OH, FUCK MAN, IS HE DEAD?" Reece asked as the team and Coach Bombay hovered over Karp. Karp had just taken a pretty harsh blow too the head. Ty crouched down and took off Karp's helmet as Reece shook his shoulder, trying to get him to wake up. "Karp?! Yo, Karp?!"
"I don't want to got to school today mom," Karp mumbled. Well he's not okay.
"Karp, how many fingers am I holding up?" Gordon questions, holding up 3 fingers.
"He wouldn't know that anyways," Peter cackled.
"Shut up Peter!" Coach Bombay, Reece and Ty snapped in sink. The twins both flicked the small boy in the forehead, causing him to send them a glare. "Karp, are you okay?"
Ty looked down at the helmet with wide eyes when he noticed the dent from the puck. "Look at this?" The male Parker said as he handed Coach the helmet.
"The Karpster. Used his head to stop the puck. Mr. Karpelandi." Averman started but stopped when he saw the twins glare. In Averman's defence, when the twins both glare at the same time, it's freaky.
"Let's get you off the ice, come on." Coach said as the team helped Karp up and over to the bench. "Okay Ducks, we still got a chance here. Connie, Ty, Jesse, Guy, time for the secret weapon." He then turned to Fulton who looked jittery, "Just like we talked about." Fulton nodded nervously before making his way out onto the ice.
Reece sat down beside Averman as the game started up again. Jesse got the puck and passed it smoothly to Fulton, making all the Cardinals jump for cover (this caused Reece to laugh in amusement) because they saw what he could before the game. But he faked them out and passed the puck to Ty who knocked it into the net when the Cardinals where distracted.
"Yes!" Reece cheered as she not so gracefully jumped over the boards. She skated out onto the ice and pulled her brother into a bone crushing hug. "We actually tied holy shit!" Reece laughed as she looked at the score board that read 2-2.
°°°
"DID YOU REALLY HAVE TO PANTS THAT GUY?" Charlie asked Reece as the Ducks where getting ready for the next game.
Reece just smirked as she says, "Yeah."
"But—"Charlie started, but sighed, quickly giving up and sitting on the bench, "—never mind." Reece looked up from tying her skates when Coach walked in.
"Hey, why aren't you guys in uniform? We got warm ups in a half hour." Coach Bombay questioned Peter, Jesse and Ty who weren't wearing their jerseys. Reece furrowed her eyebrows before throwing a glove at her brother, getting his attention.
"What's up," she mouthed over to her brother who only made a fist and hit it against his other fist and then pointed his finger at Coach Bombay. Reece's eyes widened because that signal is something the twins made up. It pretty much meant that someone either betrayed them or lied to them, or both.
"All right everyone, listen up." Coach spoke, clapping his hands together. "I got some good news. We're getting a new player, Adam Banks."
"OH, HELL NAH!" Reece shouted, shooting up out of her seat. "No! Non! Nein! Ne! Não! Nage!" It was silent for a moment as everyone stared at the girl wide eyed, wondering how she new so many languages. Reece cleared her throat awkwardly, "I object."
"What?" Charlie gaped in shock.
"He's a Hawk!" Karp snapped, looking at coach like he's crazy. Which he is in Reece's opinion.
"He's a good player." Coach Bombay sighed, hoping that the kids will realize they need a little extra help too win.
"He's an ass!" Reece shrieked, throwing her hands in the air.
"Everybody hates him." Jesse stated in an annoyed tone.
"Yeah we don't need him." Connie says confidently, Reece nodding in agreement.
"Look! I'm the coach, and I say we do need him. Now, if we make it to the playoffs, he could be a big help." Coach Bombay spoke calmly. Reece only scoffed and rolled her eyes as she sat down, starting to undo her skates.
"If?" Karp asked as he slammed his locker closed. "All of a sudden you don't think we're not good enough?"
"No, he thinks we're losers." Peter barked, glaring at coach. "Yeah, that's what he told Reilly."
"What?" Gordon asked. Reece saw her brother scoff and give coach a glare, which Reece only ever saw him give their father. But that's a story for another time.
"Come on," Ty snapped. "We heard what you said. You said we're losers, we didn't deserve to live." Reece gasped quietly and looked at her brother with wide eyes.
"That's not what I said." Coach tried to explain, but Peter wasn't having it.
"I saw the pictures of you missing that goal," Peter stands up. "You where a Hawk, weren't you? I guess you guys stick together till the end. You know what? I don't need your stinking equipment." He snaps, throwing his jersey on the floor, "See you around." He grumbled, storming out of the locker room.
"Peter, come back here! I'm talking to you son!" Bombay called after the boy, who didn't listen.
"Forget it cake-eater. If you want to play, play with yourself." Jesse snaps as he stood up, "Come on Terry."
"Where do you guys think your going?" Coach shouted after the brothers who don't return either. "I don't believe this."
Ty grabs his bag, heading towards the door. "Let's go Reece."
"You guys to?" Coach asked as the twins grabbed their stuff and made their way past him.
"See you asshat!"
