The Patrol
I am due on patrol
In one hour.
My mouth is dry
As usual.
I empty my pockets
Of personal possessions.
I check my uniform
To ensure nothing shines
Or makes a noise.
I check that there
Is no insignia
Showing.
I leave my final letter
On my pillow.
I collect my weapon
Check it
And proceed.
I take up my
Position.
As the enemy arrives
I step forward
Point my weapon
Forcing them to a stop.
Giggling ankle biters
And their parents
Safely cross the road.
I step back
My duty done
My lollipop poised
For the next attack.
It's a tough job
But someone's got to do it!!
