The Convention
It was dusk,
Dark clouds hung low,
Pregnant with menace.
In the distance
Lightning cracked,
And tore the sky apart.
All around,
I could hear men,
Hammering nails,
To secure casements,
Before it was
Too late.
I clutched my amulet tighter,
Wrapped my coat
Around me,
As the rain
Hit me,
Like stair rods.
I looked back,
She stood there,
Tears in her eyes.
The children,
Gripping her skirts
In terror.
I mouthed silently,
"I'll be back"
"I promise"
"I'll be back"
Blackness
Engulfed me.
Suddenly,
The sky was filled
With dark flying shapes.
I knew that they
Had arrived,
And I must flee.
I hurried past
The dark forbidding mansion
On the hill,
The garish neon sign flashing.
Welcome!
