0 | Prologue

"Y- you sure this is going to work?" I ask nervously, tugging at my hospital gown.

"No. That's why you're called the test subject," the doctor replies.

I gulp. I'm so screwed.

The scientists continue to ignore me as they fiddle with their high tech computers. I glance at the large incubator that I will soon be placed in. It only increases my anxiety.

"Okay, Zack! We're all ready for you," a pretty nurse chimes. Her words are coated with an intoxicating amount of artificial sugar.

I shake my head, terrified. Everyone was so furious when I decided to do this. It's only until now that I realize how stupid the whole idea actually is. But I'm  desperate, I refuse to accept the fact that I'll have to spend the rest of my life in quarantine.

"No, I think I change my mind," I stammer.

The nurse frowns. "I'm afraid it's too late to back out now. Here, I have some medicine to make you relax a bit."

I yank my arm away when she pulls a syringe from her pocket. "Are you even listening?! I don't want to do this!"

Two men grab my arms from behind me. I kick, bite, and struggle with no prevail. The syringe is jabbed into my neck. The stuff works like a charm in 30 seconds.

"Is this even legal?" I slur. My tongue feels much too big for my mouth.

The nurse giggles. I can barely see her through my foggy vision. "You did sign a contract."

They have to drag me to the incubator, my legs barely work. Every feeble attempt I make to put up a fight seems to go in slow motion. I'm forced to lie down in the incubator. Once I'm locked in, there's no going back.

"Hopefully, this will just seem like one big nap," the nurse reassures.

Hopefully?

When the water enters, the drugs can't take away the panic I start to feel. I'm strapped in, unable to move.

I try to scream, but my voice won't work. Nothing is working. I clench my eyes closed when the water fills up to my chin. It doesn't take long for the cold, silent darkness to summon me.
