I woke.

The sun was shining into my room through the old tilted sheets nailed on the wall as curtains. It peaked through and made my messy room glow a warm orange tone.

I drowsily rub the tiredness out of my eyes as I lazily sit up. My dark almond coloured hair was a bird's nest and my face resembling a panda's. I had hardly slept last night in fear of the morning. This morning. Today is going to be an absolute nightmare

My name is Anastasia Abbot. I'm 14 years old, and I live in a Gargantuan's cabinet.

Yeah, you heard it. I live in someone's cabinet. But it doesn't really alarm me anymore for I have been here my whole life. The world is populated with Gargantuans now in the year 3048. They came out of nowhere, huge beings that resembled humans. They took over the world so quick that humans didn't have time to respond and defend. First went Canada, then America, then the whole world somehow got the bad flu of Gargantuans and bam. We were over. At least that's what I've been told all my life. This happened dozens of years ago.

I made my way to the washroom and washed up. I brushed the bird's nest on my head until it plopped down to a frilly puff. I grinned at myself in the mirror with satisfaction and went to the kitchen where my mother was cooking.

I could hear the loud booming footsteps of the Gargantuan's outside, as each of them rose in the morning and made their way to the kitchen to eat. I was always told to be quieter in the mornings for they might hear us.

By 'us', I mean me and my mom. We live at the very corner of the cookie cabinet where there is a small hole. The hole to them is the door to our house for us. It is blocked off by a small brown door that must blend into the rest of the cabinet well because we haven't been found yet. My mother was cooking in the kitchen, her back towards me. I smile to myself and take a seat. My house was tiny. Maybe a quarter of what my mother's house used to look like before The Fall. That's what we call the era Gargantuans started taking over.

My mom carries the pan over and kisses my forehead before setting the food on the table.

"Are you ready for today?" She asks over her shoulder while washing her hands in the sink before joining me at the table.

"No..." I mutter. I was not ready for today. My mom takes a seat across from me.

"Honey it's going to be fine." She says, "I've done this hundred of times before. We make our way out of the cabinet at night and find some food then go to their bedrooms to cut out some cloth then-"

"Mom I know what we're doing." I interrupt. "You've told me this a hundred times already." I groan. Suddenly I don't feel so good.

"I don't want to do this." I complain, "Is there any other way that we can like, get the supplies? I'm sure if we can like, find a loophole. This is dangerous and I-"

"Anastasia." My mother suddenly calls, she reaches out her hand from her side of the table and rests it on my fidgeting ones.

"It's going to be fine." I felt troubled and annoyed but missed the flash of guilt and sorrow through her eyes.

"Anastasia the world is no longer." She says a serious look upon her face that almost scared me. "The world long ago where humans could roam and be free has dissolved away. In this new world,

we fight to survive."
