~Chapter 8~

After school I met Theodosia at her locker. "We still on for the library?"

She smiled and nodded quickly. "Of course. We have to get that project done somehow." She slung her bag over her shoulder and pushed her locker door closed.

I did my best to play it cool. Theodosia was the biggest crush I'd had in a long time and I didn't want to ruin my chances.

"So what are we thinking for this project?" Her question startled me out of my thoughts.

"Well.... We're making an original.... There's gonna be a lot of writing and tweaking and stuff...."

"Right." Theodosia nodded.

"And we have to make sure it's actually original." I said. "We don't want to get called out for plagiarism, even if it's unintentional."

She nodded again. "Okay."

"So basically it's just trial and error, I guess."

"Sounds perfect." She smiled and switched her violin case to her other hand.

You're perfect.

We talked about random things on the way to the library, what our favorite books were, the kinds of music we liked. It was fun. I showed her how to use a blade of grass as a whistle. She laughed so hard after her first try, and it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. Then she had me show her how again.

We went straight to the back when we reached the library, to the small rooms for studying and working on things. Theodosia scanned her library card in front of one of the locks and it popped open quietly. She led me into a small recital room with the most gorgeous baby grand I'd seen in my life.

"Oh my...." I couldn't even finish it as I went over. It was sleek and black, with a golden logo stamped on one side. "It's a Bechstein."

"Is that a good thing?" Theodosia asked curiously.

"They're one of the best piano manufacturers in the world." I rested my fingers on the keys and pressed down.

The chord that filled the room was heavenly. "That is.... So beautiful."

Theodosia giggled, bringing me back to real life. I smiled a little sheepishly. "What?"

"You should ask it out on a date if it's so perfect." She joked.

I chuckled. "Y'know, if it was a person, I probably would."

She giggled again, then quickly composed herself. "Okay, lets get this started. I had an idea for a little something that might work with my violin, if you want to hear it."

"Sure!" I pulled out the piano bench to sit on it.

Theodosia nodded and quickly got out her violin. "Can you play octave Gs, one below middle C and one above?"

I found the notes she was asking and played them.

She pulled her bow across one of the strings and tweaked the sound until she was satisfied it matched. "Now Ds, both above middle C?"

We worked through all four strings like that. It went fairly quickly.

"Okay, now that's done." She smiled. "Want to hear my idea?"

"Yes!" I grinned and turned on the piano bench to watch her.

Theodosia took a deep breath and began to play. It was a pretty melody, fairly simple and easy to work with. Her fingers moved gracefully over the strings and I quickly clapped for her once she'd finished.

She giggled. "What do you think?"

"It sounds amazing! What key do you have it in?"

"A Major." She smiled.

I nodded. "Give me a second, okay?" Turning to the piano, I began to tap out a little tune, starting with her melody, then adding to it. Once I had something that could go underneath it, I nodded to her. "Okay, play with me."

The two parts fit together almost perfectly. I grinned and looked up at her once I'd finished playing. "That's amazing!"

She nodded quickly. "Did you do all of that in your head just now?"

"Yep."

"That's so cool! You're an amazing musician, Philip."

I grinned. "Thanks."

You're an amazing girl, Theodosia.

We used my computer to begin writing a score. Theodosia was really helpful with pointing out little things that could make the two parts fit together.

"Oh dear, look at the time!" She suddenly exclaimed. "If I'm not home soon my father might have a heart attack."

"You should go then." I smiled, inwardly begging her to stay.

"I guess I'll see you tomorrow then." She smiled and stood, packing up her violin. "This was a lot of fun, Philip, I'm glad you convinced me to work with you."

"I'm glad you said yes."

She giggled and waved as she left.

I leaned back in the chair I was sitting in, sighing. I was never going to get her. She saw me as a friend, if even that.

A little frustrated and not quite ready to go home yet, I grabbed my sketchbook. I only had a pencil, so a graphite sketch would have to do.

Her face bloomed onto the page as I worked, and I smiled softly. Those gorgeous eyes, the bouncy curls. That beautiful smile. She was everything.

I titled it.

'She's Caught My Eye'
