~Chapter 18~
As Theo and I pulled apart slowly, I became aware of the entire auditorium cheering our names. Theo was blushing heavily, but she was grinning widely and her eyes were sparkling.
"You're so beautiful..." I whispered, probably grinning like an idiot. She giggled and pulled me into another kiss.
"THEO! PHILIP! THEO! PHILIP!"
Francis wasn't even trying to bring the crowd's attention back to her. She ushered the groups off, gently breaking Theo and I apart and making a teasing comment about our relationship. I shoved her lightly and she laughed.
"C'mon, lovebirds, lets go meet your adoring fans."
I grabbed Theo's hand, suddenly feeling a surge of fear. The only person I was worried about in this was Pa.
"You two are the grossest, sappiest, most dis-gus-tingly cute couple ever!" Dom grinned as he pulled the both of us into a hug. "You're putting literally everyone else to shame right now and I love it."
"If you're trying to get a kiss it's not happening." I teased, holding Theo away from him.
"Gross, no." He made a face, then laughed. "No really, you guys, that was really great."
"Philip!"
I turned around and my eyes widened in surprise. "Aunt Angelica?"
"You were amazing, sweetie, I'm so proud of you!" She pulled me into a hug.
"I missed you!"
"Oh I missed you too, sweetie." She pushed my curls back. "How are you?"
"Great!" I turned to Theo and reached for her hand. "Theo, this is my aunt, Angelica Schuyler Church. Aunt Angelica, this is Theodosia, my girlfriend."
"I'd certainly hope so, with the way you kissed her onstage." She smiled. "Hello, Theodosia."
"In all fairness, Mrs. Church, I kissed him." Theo smiled back, offering Aunt Angelica her hand to shake. I heard another familiar voice in the crowd and kissed Theo's temple quickly, whispering a warning.
"Incoming."
"THEODOSIA DARLING!" Aunt Peggy nearly tackled my girlfriend out of my arms. "Oh I love you so much you are without a doubt my favorite daughter-in-law!"
"Oh my- Aunt Peg, we're not married!"
Angelica began to laugh. "Oh Lord, I've missed you, sister dearest."
"Angelica!"
"Eliza!" She hugged her last sister as my mom walked over.
I grinned. It was always so much fun to see my mom interact with her sisters. Sure, I got to see her talk to Peggy all the time, but Angelica lived out of town, and we hardly got to see her because she was so busy with her job.
"Theo, these are the Schuyler girls. Notorious at every high school and college in the state for stealing hearts and breaking them." Aaron Burr commented as he walked over.
"Ah, Aaron." Angelica smiled. "It really has been too long. I hope you've matured since the last time we interacted."
Theo snickered and whispered, "Oh, I've heard this story."
I glanced at her. "Well you'll have to tell me later, I don't want to get in the middle of that..."
Peggy pulled Theo off again with a half apology in my direction. Angelica and Mr. Burr had gotten into a conversation that actually seemed pretty civil, and Mom was adding a comment every so often.
I slipped off to the side to get out of the crowd for a minute. The attention was great, but I really just needed to compose myself after everything that had happened tonight.
I was over the moon in love with Theodosia, and I'd always been scared that she didn't love me back as much, but that kiss... whoa, yeah, she loved me too.
It was amazing.
"Philip."
And there go all the happy thoughts.
"Uh, hi Pops...."
Pa's arms were crossed, and he had that look in his eyes. That look that said he was beyond angry, but he was holding it back.
Lawyer mode.
I hated lawyer mode.
"Pops before you say anything-"
"I told you not to talk to her. Not to associate with her. And now I find out- not from you directly, but watching you onstage in front of your entire school, in front of your family, in front of everyone- that you are dating. Dating, and have been for how long?"
I gritted my teeth at the passive aggressive tone and took a deep breath. This was the one time, the one time I was not backing down.
"A month."
"A month." Pa said scornfully. "A month of dating that- that-"
"Her name is Theodosia. She is a wonderful woman. She's smart, she's funny, she's sweet-"
"She's a Burr." He said, as if this explained everything.
"She's not her father!" I crossed my arms. "You cannot tell me that when you look at her you only see Aaron Burr!"
"Philip, what's going on?"
Pa nearly pounced on Mom as she came around the corner. "You can't be okay with this!"
"With Philip dating Theo? Of course I am, she's a sweetheart." Mom said, raising her eyebrows.
"She's a Burr!"
"Alexander, you are a delusional fool if you think that old rivalries like yours and Aaron's from school cannot be buried. She is a teenager, and so is Philip. And you cannot tell them not to date."
"I am Philip's father and he will listen to what I say. I knew I should have argued for full custody-"
"Don't you dare bring that up again, Alexander! You have no right to ask for full custody of our son just because you don't believe some of the ideals I'm teaching him, such as fairness and forgiveness!"
"Stop!" I got between them. "Pops, you can't force me not to date Theodosia-"
"You don't think I won't?" He snarled.
I stopped and stood up straight. This was the end of this.
"No. You will not. And if you try to, I will sue you, on Mom's behalf, for full custody. It's not like you've really taken time to be my father recently anyway."
Silence. Pa looked absolutely shell-shocked.
It wasn't until Mr. Burr spoke up that I realized that he, my aunts, and Theo had come to see what was going on.
"And to ensure you cannot make the argument that he is not a proper lawyer, though I could certainly see him winning on his own, I will be representing Eliza and Philip."
Alexander Hamilton drew himself up slowly. "I'll have the court summons on your desk by Tuesday, Burr."
"Well, Miss Eliza," Mr. Burr continued calmly as my father stalked off, infuriated. "Would you and your family like to come over for dinner?
[A/N I'm sorry I'm so inconsistent with what Philip calls his old man... also yes, drama is ensuing]
