~Chapter 17~
"Are you as nervous as I am?" Theo asked, glancing at me.
I looked at her and held my hand up, showing that it was shaking visibly. She giggled a little and grabbed it with her own, giving my hand a gentle squeeze.
We were the last act in the talent show. Everyone had seen the list when it came out, and a lot of people had told Theo and I that they were specifically excited for our performance. It put a lot on our shoulders.
"Is your dad here?" I asked her.
She nodded, chewing her lip. I tapped her nose gently with my fingertip and she smiled.
"Yours?"
I shrugged. "I honestly don't know. He hardly answers his phone anymore. I know Mom's here."
Dad was the only person I hadn't told about us. The thought of it almost made me sick to my stomach.
"I guess we'll find out."
I nodded. "I guess so."
"Our last act of the evening has been one that is particularly talented and I'm sure a lot of people have been very excited for it!" The announcer, a senior named Francis, paused for a scream of enthusiasm from the crowd.
"I know, I know, the anticipation is killing us!" She laughed. "Alright, our last act of the night is a wonderful duo: Foes In Love!"
"Dom was right about that name, I really like how it sounds." Theo whispered. I grinned and nodded.
"He always knows."
"These two have a little song that they wrote for us, and for each other! So everyone, please help me welcome Foes In Love!"
The crowd began to cheer and I walked out onto the stage, to the piano. Theo wasn't going to walk out until we started playing.
"Hi everyone. My Foe will be here in a second. I just wanted to say that I've had this on my mind for a while and this was kind of my way of expressing it. I hope you all enjoy."
The piano on the stage wasn't fantastic, but it was well-tuned and kept in fairly good condition, so I couldn't complain about it. I slid onto the piano bench and laid my hands on the keys, taking a deep breath.
As the first notes of the song floated over the audience, I closed my eyes and psyched myself up a little.
Performing is my art, but it's been a hot minute since I sang in front of an audience.
"Dear Theodosia, what to say to you?
You caught my eye, there's no one else to blame.
When you came into my life you smiled, and you stole my heart.
I'm dedicating every day to you.
Domestic life might not be quite my style,
When you smile, you knock me out, I fall apart,
And I thought I was so smart."
Theodosia's violin joined sweetly as she stood next to the piano, at one of the free-standing microphones.
"We will come of age with our great nation,
They'll shout and cheer for us,
They'll never fear for us!
If they take good care of their creation,
They'll pass it onto us, they'll give the world to us and we'll blow 'em all away.
Someday, someday,
Yeah we'll blow 'em all away!
Someday, some day...."
I backed off, playing a little quieter so Theo's violin and voice could be heard better.
"Ooh, Philip when you smile I am undone.
My sun.
You're my bright sun. Love is not the word I'm looking for, there is so much more in my heart now.
Ooh, Philip, I really think you are the one.
My sun.
When you smile, I fall apart, and I thought I was so smart.
Our families may not approve-"
I smiled and changed my line the tiniest bit.
"My father doesn't approve."
"But I don't care-"
"What they say or do."
"We'll do whatever it takes."
"We know it's not a mistake."
"You know I'd do anything for you...."
I looked up at her and grinned as we went into the final chorus.
"We will come of age with our great nation!
They'll shout and cheer for us,
They'll never fear for us!
If they take good care of their creation, they'll pass it on to us, they'll give the world to us,
And we'll blow 'em all away!
Someday, someday.
Yeah we'll blow 'em all away.
Someday, some day...."
Theo sat down on the piano bench next to me just as I played the last two chords, resting her head on my shoulder.
For half a second, I could only focus on her, then the crowd erupted in cheers and I jumped a little. Theo giggled, kissing my cheek, then got up and tugged on my arm to get me to my feet as well.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Foes In Love!" Francis waved her hand in our direction, grinning.
"Alright, we're to the last part of our night. If all the acts would come onstage please?"
There were ten acts in total. Theo grabbed my hand and squeezed it, leaning against me a little bit.
"As you can see on the screen behind us, you get to vote on who will get first place! Pull your phones out and text the number you'd like to vote for to the number on the screen!"
"I'm so nervous." Theo whispered.
I looked at her and chuckled. "We did the hard part. I'm not worried about whether we win or not."
"True." She smiled softly.
"And three, two, one, voting closed! Your results: in third place, our juggling act!"
The two sophomores cheered, and there was applause.
"Second place: Our lovely soloist, Miss Danielle!"
She was a senior. She grinned and waved as they applauded her.
"And in first place. With quite a few more votes...."
"JUST TELL US!" Someone yelled in the crowd. I laughed as I realized it was Dom.
"Our winners of tonight's contest are in fact...." Francis paused again.
Then she grabbed Theo's and my entwined hands and held them high in the air.
"Foes In Love!"
The auditorium erupted in cheers, but I was a little more occupied with Theo as she threw her arms over my shoulders and pulled me down into our first real kiss.
