I like you
"Good boy, you won yourself dinner tonight!" one of the robbers laughed mockingly, passing his fingers over the German Shepherd, who immediately tensed up.
Thankfully after passing by him, he threw the dog a bone and the canine happily chewed on it.
He was glad he got something to eat today... there had been so many days since they fed him properly..
After the two intimidating men left through the door, Rat-Hound heard something approaching and quickly got up with bared teeth, growling deeply.
Confusing to him though, whatever was walking towards him had a weird smell.
The thing finally stood under the light, revealing itself.
It was a cat... a very strange cat.
It stood on its hind legs... and it had green fur, as well as half its body covered in metal. What the heck was it?!
Rat-Hound had to admit, it had been a long while since he had been this scared.
The cat laughed loudly. "Aha! I see you're contemplating my majesty!" he said, crossing his robotic arms.
"W-what are you?" was all the dog answered, still being aggressive and on guard.
"Ha ha! Can't you tell?!" The cat went from cheerful to angered in one second. "I'm the great Mechanikat! The one and only!"
"Dogs are so blind, I swear..." the cat then proceeded to call a small, light blue kitten. "Snooky! Come here right now!"
"Yes, sir! Right next to you, sir!" Snooky answered, immediately standing next to his boss with a wide smile.
Now Rat-Hound was more confused than anything; should he just scare these weird cats away or something? Normally, cats wouldn't dare even cross his path...
He started growling again when Mechanikat got closer to him.
"My, my, so you're the little rat that has been making such a ruckus here on Earth?" he looked down at him like he was a mere pawn. "That Dog Star Patrol has been talking a lot about you lately... sounds like you wouldn't be completely useless to me."
"Huh...?" Was all as the brown dog was able to say.
"So what do you say?" Mechanikat stretched out his claw, putting it in front of Rat-Hound's nose. "Will you join me so we both can get what we want?"
Rat-Hound looked puzzled for a while before turning angry. He scoffed. "Why would I ever join you, cat? You're an idiot if you think I'd ever—"
"You'll get revenge."
"..." Now he became quiet. "Re... revenge?"
"I know you hate him. Bat-Hound." Mechanikat explained. "I mean, why else would you use his name, too?"
"Even the mask and everything." The green cat pointed at his face, which was half covered with a black domino mask.
"And yet you're the complete opposite of him." He laughed again. "It's ironic... Bat-Hound would never commit murder. Yet you, I wouldn't doubt you already got your paws dirty."
Rat-Hound began growling again. "I didn't choose my name... My masters did." the dog clarified. "It's because... of the popularity of that mongrel. That way the police gets confused... and no one ever expects me to be dangerous."
"I see you called him a mongrel, though?"
"Tch. Shut up."
"That's something Bat-Hound would say, too!"
"Really, shut up! I'll bite your face off if you mention that filthy name again!" the German Shepherd rose his head with a terrifying bark.
Mechanikat laughed, closing his eyes. "You're easily irritable. That will benefit me, too— Err, I mean, it will benefit BOTH of us! If you join me!"
Seeing that the dog was still growling and glaring at him, now seeming even more threatening, he decided to go for a last chance.
"Alright, alright! Jeez!" Mechanikat backed down, accepting 'defeat.' "C'mon, Snooky, let's leave now. It's obvious this pooch is too stubborn for his own good."
"Really, sir?" Snooky inquired worriedly.
"Yeah, yeah. He won't see a golden opportunity when it's dancing and singing right in front of his muzzle. We have no business with idiots like that!"
The two space cats started to leave, keeping up their act.
"..." Rat-Hound was now silent as he stared at them. Then he looked down in doubt of himself.
"...Wait," he called, stopping the grinning felines.
"Yeah?" Mechanikat smirked at him.
"I'll work with you... someone needs to teach that mongrel a lesson," he said lowly, glaring sharply at him.
Mechanikat was ecstatic. "Oh ho ho! We will terrorize the Dog Star Patrol, I tell you!"
"And not just that, sir!" Snooky told him.
They hugged each other. "The whole galaxy...!" they exclaimed at the same time.
Rat-Hound wasn't sure if he had just made a pact with the devil; but honestly, he didn't care. All he wanted was for that mongrel...
To feel the pain that he did.
----
Bat-Hound was exactly about to leave; he was sure things couldn't possibly be worse after his talk with Brainy...
Well, he was wrong.
Suddenly, all the lights went out inside the red spaceship. He looked around and heard all the shocked gasps and screams around him, everyone was surprised as the environment turned pitch black.
He wasn't the only one who didn't panic: Brainy just stared up at the ceiling, ever so calmly. She cleared her throat and proceeded to jump into her pillow, flying into the air and catching everybody's attention.
"Everyone, calm down... Calm down," she told them like the true leader she was.
"What just happened, Brainy?! Please tell me you accidentally pressed the wrong button or something..." Mammoth Mutt pleaded with slight fear.
"I did not do such a thing... but you don't need to worry, either. Even though this has never happened in our spaceship before, we don't need to worry over a mere blackout—"
"The doors are blocked, too!" Terry yelled while trying and failing to open the exit door.
A lot of the dogs (and cat) panicked again.
Brainy made a motion with her ears to tell them to sit down. "Dog Star Patrol!" she called, bringing everyone's attention towards her again.
Ace stared at her with admiration, he couldn't help but feel warmth stir inside his chest whenever she showed her true worth and power.
He couldn't believe someone like her had been a tiny, quivering pup once...
"We have to remain calm during this situation!" she told everybody with authority. "We'll find out what caused this, but if we're all jumbled up when a villain attacks, we'll be of no use..."
Ace nodded, in her support. "I agree. We have to be mature and calm... especially if there's a villian lurking around."
Everybody looked at him with surprise and interest; Bat-Hound didn't speak up normally, yet now he was talking to help Brainy.
It was unexpected.
Except for Krypto and Streaky, who just glanced at each other, smirking knowingly and chuckling under their breaths until Bat-Hound stopped them with an unamused glare.
He rolled his eyes at their immaturity until he saw Brainy smiling at him slightly, but only for half a second before awkwardly looking away.
His tail started to wag unconsciously as he thought of her smile, and a blush started to spread over his cheeks. Thankfully, his mask didn't let anyone see it. He did want to order his tail to stop, though.
"...Anyway," Brainy continued. "Ahem, nobody will be able to leave tonight. It's already late..."
All of them looked around as if already knowing what their leader was going to say.
"...Everybody is welcome to sleepover in the spaceship tonight. We all need to rest in case something dangerous happens and to find a solution tomorrow." When she said this, everyone seemed at least a little taken aback, but nodded in agreement.
It's not like they could get out of the spaceship if they wanted to.
"...But... how can you be so sure there's nothing causing the blackout inside the spacecraft right now?" Wonder Poodle asked cautiously, Krypto nodding next to her.
"Well... we can never be completely sure, but..." She looked down at the control center, in which she could tell what was going on with the rocket at all times. "There's no sign of any interference or invaders in the scanner, so I doubt it's anything serious."
Wonder Poodle glanced at Superdog with uncertainty, which he shared.
Ace on the other paw looked at Brainy with full trust in her decision, causing her to stumble back a little before flying away from the room.
"Follow me, I'll show you your rooms..."
----
The rooms inside the wide spaceship were divided: Tusky Husky, Bull Dog and Hot Dog slept in one room, Krypto, Streaky and Bat-Hound slept in another, while Kiara and Mammoth Mutt shared the last one.
Brainy decided to stay in the control room working, and making sure everyone was safe.
Ace wasn't completely comfortable with the idea of her being the only one who didn't get any sleep, but she wouldn't let anybody protest about it.
He sighed deeply, still thinking about it, when he noticed Streaky and Krypto staring at him. "What?" he said curtly.
Krypto chuckled slightly, taking off his red cape. "Aren't you going to take off your mask? Isn't it bothersome while you're trying to sleep?" he asked curiously.
"No," the Bat immediately replied. "Neither of you are going to see my face."
"Aww, come on!" Streaky whined before yawning and settling down on the floor. "I really wanted to know what color his eyes were..."
"I think they're black, no big deal." Krypto told him, also falling down into the floor.
"They're actually the opposite of that..." Bat-Hound thought, now on the floor as well, with the cat and white dog facing his back.
"...I hope Brainy will be okay..."
---
Streaky was snoring away and Krypto was deep asleep when he heard a strange noise that woke him up.
He looked around, but it wasn't neither Superdog nor Supercat who were being loud.
It sounded like... crying. Whimpering.
He slowly walked out the half open door, hearing the creak it made.
His paws were as silent as the night as he carefully stepped towards the crying.
Prepared to meet something bizarre such as a villian, he quickly jumped in front of whatever was making that noise; in an aggressive stance.
...But it was actually Brainy who was crying.
He couldn't have been more shocked as he slowly walked towards her small, curled up figure now.
She was laying down on top of her pillow, she had probably fallen asleep from exhaustion. Staying up working till so late wasn't good for her...
He looked down worriedly, leaning down as well; especially because Brainy's closed eyes had tears emerging from them.
Her magical ears began to rise and show him a hologram... it was Brainy imagining something horrible.
The Dog Star Patrol spaceship was completely destroyed, splitting into two, all of their friends were struggling for air while floating up in space, and she just looked at everyone helplessly.
A villian, Mechanikat, had a red button in his hand, which he pressed again, causing the spaceship to blow up.
And then... Brainy suddenly turned into a puppy all over again, sad and sobbing into her paws.
All alone...
"Brainy..." he murmured, feeling hurt over her nightmare. He moved closer to her until their bodies were brushing up against each other.
She had been acting strong for everyone while actually feeling scared inside her. She didn't want to worry anybody but she was the most worried out of them all...
She was worried she wouldn't be able to save them, and it would be her fault anything happened to them.
Suddenly, he felt her unconsciously bury her head under his neck, tears dampening his chest.
His face lit up with a blush, but then dissipated as he slowly licked away her tears, wanting to console her.
She was still deeply asleep, but eventually her crying stopped.
Her body relaxed and her breathing became steady.
He sighed in relief, glad that she was serene now. He remained there for nearly all the night, watching over her while she slept peacefully to make sure she wouldn't get any other nightmares.
When he noticed how many hours had passed, by he got up worriedly; he wasn't sure how Brainy would react knowing that he was there, so close to her.
So he immediately got up, but slowly enough so she wouldn't notice he left. When he was starting to walk back to his room, he suddenly felt her paw touch his, stopping him in a panic.
Had she woken up?! Was she going to get angry at him—
"A... Ace..." he heard her mutter softly.
He looked down at her, only to see she was still deep asleep. Was she talking in her sleep...?
He saw her yawning slightly, before quietly whispering the next words. "I... like you."
He felt his heart stop all of the sudden, but then speed up like a drum. His face became warm again and he smiled just as warmly.
He kissed her head gently before giving her a last, content glance and leaving.
.
.
.
Brainy smiled; her dreams had suddenly become happy.
