Chapter 94: Investigation and informations
The CEO bang Si-Hyuk, accompanied by President Moon Jae-in had publicly visited the boys at the Salpêtrière Mercy a few days after admission to hospital but given the health of Jin relayed by the managers, had renounced to visit the boys cared for in Saint-Louis because the visit was mediatized.
President Moon, who was very fond of the group that made South Korea proud but especially loved Jin after their several meetings, wished him a speedy recovery and a happy birthday, even to the point of personally sending him a gift.
Moon Jae did not know at the time that his affection for Jin was contrary to the thought of the Korean boys' band fans and did not speak about it. However, he strongly condemned the attack on the group and said his country was ready to cooperate with the French police to bring justice.
He was received by French President Emmanuel Macron during his brief official and impromptu two-day visit. The two presidents reaffirmed together the Franco-Korean friendship and assured that this event would only make it stronger.
They visited the Stade de France where the tragedy had taken place, and also went to the bedside of many victims, Moon Jae reiterating his country's public apology, taking its share of responsibility but taking care to preserve at all costs the reputation of the group of artists and its agency.
The agency and the group were indeed the golden showcase of South Korea and allowed the country to generate more than one billion euros of revenue each year in the country. They had to be protected from bad public opinion at all costs.
Bang Si-Hyuk, too scrutinized by cameras and journalists, followed President Moon during this public visit, then visited privately each of his protégés but was careful not to hold for the moment the discussion he was to have with them urgently.
He could not lead it until he returned to Korea. However, he relied on Namjoon and the managers to keep his group under control. He was questioned by the police and the whole group – except for Jin, who was still not speaking and should be questioned by the Korean police later – as were the Big Hit staff present in France.
Everyone had to tell his version of the facts and the testimony of the artists who added to the many others already made by the fans, were moving:
Jungkook
...When Seokjin received the Army Bomb, I was shocked for a while, but I quickly noticed that the crowd was agitating abnormally and that it was dangerous to stay there waiting for help. I preferred to leave as much as I could but I wasn't fast enough...
Taehyung
...The attack went so fast and we were too far away. When we realized what was happening, we wanted to go back to Seokjin and Jungkook but Jungkook warned us of the danger that was happening, he tried to protect us but we took too long to react and security was quickly overwhelmed by the crowd, they couldn't help us at that moment...
Namjoon
...They were in trouble, I wanted to join them, but people started going up to the stage and running to us by the hundreds. I tried to break through the crowd to join them but it was too dense. I saw them fall, and I ended up getting pulled in and falling out too. That's when I broke my wrist...
Jimin
...I tried to hold on to Taehyung when we fell but I broke my shin and couldn't walk. I was in such pain that I couldn't move, I screamed but I think nobody heard me. I was trained by the crowd, I wanted to shout to ask them to stop, to let go, but no one heard me. I lost sight of Taehyung and I was very afraid I would never see him again but I couldn't get out of the noose of this crowd that was dragging me. It was very distressing, it was being plunged into the water and vainly trying to get the head out of the water to breathe but constantly being tossed by the currents and being brought back to the bottom...
Hoseok
...I shouted to the people to stop, to calm down otherwise we would all be in danger, we were far too many on the bridge and everywhere around us, it was the effervescence, it was like a huge ant hill but we were not as organized as ants: it was anarchy, total disorder....
Yoongi
...I couldn't find any of the members, so I ran with the people trying to run away from this hell. But in the panic movement, people began to fight and it was necessary to avoid both people who inconsiderate crushing others and those who fought fiercely. I don't know if these people were fighting to survive or if they were there to hurt the fans. Perhaps they were anti-fans who came to spread terror. In any case, I got further and further away from the stage and probably from other members...
Jungkook
...We were overwhelmed by the crowd coming up to flee with us. People began to hold on to us so strongly that we ended up being separated without my noticing. I fell on one side and Seokjin fell on the other. I almost died on one side and he almost died on the other. I got away with it thanks to Namjoon who asked people to stop crushing me and fortunately, they listened to him, it is thanks to him that I am alive, he saved me. But I'm never so scared, I thought it was over...
Taehyung
...When I fell, I felt my head hit hard on the ground and I lay there half-stunned, unable to move or speak. At first, I heard and saw everything that happened, I even felt people stepping on me trying to run away. But I couldn't do anything, I couldn't even tell them that I was alive and that I needed help, nobody noticed me on the ground, I was one body among many. It was the scariest feeling I've ever had in my life, I swear. The crowd began to crush me, I could not breathe, I thought I would die trampled... I felt as if I had been buried alive. I don't want to go through this again. Please take care of each other under any circumstances...
Namjoon
...I had a hard time crossing the human tide and finding Jungkook who was literally being crushed and then I asked him to go and rescue Seokjin. All alone because I could not accompany him when I could barely put one foot in front of the other. I left him to fend for himself and it was partly because of me that he was stabbed and nearly lost his life. I should never have sent him out in the face of this danger alone, I should have taken him safely, protected him. Yet, I can't help but think that if I had, Seokjin would have lost his life that night. So was that the right decision? For my part, I was saved by Army and I want to thank them for it: thank you from the bottom of my heart, thank you for having saved my life, I already owed you a lot and I now owe you even more...
Jimin
...There came a time when I had no doubt that I was going to die, but security recognized me and helped me out of that furious sea. If I hadn't been that famous artist I am, I probably would have died because they wouldn't have considered the possibility of saving me rather than another. I'm sorry for all the people who could have been saved in my place. Every life has the same value, I never wanted mine to come before anyone else's...
Hoseok
...Despite my screams, no one heard me, everyone kept running without thinking about the survival of others. Everyone thought about surviving and having been immersed in this crowd myself, I understood that it was a natural reflex: when you are about to die, you struggle to survive, without really thinking about all those around you. And it's only when you're safe that you start thinking about all the people you should have protected. I got away with only broken bones. Some lost their lives. I'm sorry I couldn't protect them while they saw me as their hope... I was saved by one of our bodyguards but many did not have that chance. I am grateful but I also feel guilty. I hope Army will forgive me...
Yoongi
...I received a blow to the head, I think it was an army bomb: someone was struggling with a lot of strength to fight their way, without thinking about others. I fell down. When I woke up, my shoulder was dislocated and I realized that I had been trampled and could have died while I was unconscious. I was totally vulnerable. I was nothing at the time, other than an obstacle in the path of those who wanted to survive, it was frightening...
Jungkook
...I reached the other side, but that's when I saw Seokjin overwhelmed by the crowd, that I heard the screams of the girl attacking him, that I saw the knife she raised, and that I saw her stab him. I think I'll never forget that horrible moment. What I saw, what I heard, I'll never forget... but now, I'm just very grateful that Seokjin made it. I think my life would have stopped at the same time if he hadn't survived....
The world's press had taken hold of the event that was on the front page of every newspaper every day since the concert:
While France is criticized for its catastrophic management of the BTS concert event, that French fans are worried about never being able to receive the band on its country again and possibly being held responsible by other fans around the world, the investigation began in Paris but also in Seoul to try to understand what happened this Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at the Stade de France and what could have led to this tragedy that we all now know as the "tragedy of the Stade de France".
Many people present at the concert, some of whom have already been heard by the police, have confirmed a terrible experience:
"It was supposed to be the most beautiful night of my life, it became the scariest of all, a real nightmare," reveals Léa, a young woman of 18 years fan of the band for several years. But when asked if she would return to another concert without fear, she adds: "without hesitation, I love BTS and I know that in the future, their company will pay more attention to their safety and ours."
This is what most of the fans interviewed admitted: their love for the band is "stronger than all the horrors of this world". One of them even said "I am traumatized but not forever because I know that BTS will help me overcome my trauma. I can't wait to know that they are well of course and also, to see them on stage again."
Yet, despite this obvious love of thousands of people for these 7 Korean artists, it is now proven that hatred also hides in the ranks of their spectators, some would even say, in the ranks of their extreme fans. This was revealed by the Prefect of the city of Paris who formalized the first hypotheses uncovered by the ongoing investigations.
Indeed, while no one seems to have seen who had started the attack for now, the youngest member of the group, Jeon Jungkook, did however acknowledge the person who stabbed him and his eldest Kim Seokjin: it would be a young fan of Korean origin to whom he had the opportunity to speak during a radio show and whose identity will be easily determined with the collaboration of the radio channel if it turns out to be her.
She would have explicitly criticized the elder of BTS for having a too close relationship with the youngest and for not having understood before that he should have moved away from him. That would be the only reason she would want to take Seokjin's life. This may seem like an unlikely motive if we forget to dig in and look at Korean culture in more detail.
Indeed, Korean extreme fans, called "sasaengs" are very well known in this country where each group of artists has a very loyal fan base but which often counts in its ranks more radical fans than we know little on the other side of the world.
The object thrown at Seokjin while he was on the front of the stage with Jungkook for the last song of the concert was found and is being analyzed for DNA to try to find his possessor. It has already been reported that this is an object known to any fan of the band, an Army Bomb, the famous light stick of the BTS.
However, the object was modified and weighed down to become a very dangerous object and it almost knocked out the oldest of the artists but could also have killed him, had it been launched with more force.
Several cameras had already established that the pitcher was a woman, this is now confirmed and goes in the direction of Jungkook's statement, which, remember, was based only on the voice to establish the identity of the aggressor.
Many fans asked about the explanation for such a rage against a member explained that Kim Seokjin was currently the least appreciated member of BTS for a reason that surprised foreigners in the kpop world: his ambiguous relationship with the youngest member, Jungkook.
Some fans showed journalists video montages where the "jinkook moments" as they call the moments of complicity merged, affectionate gestures that are sometimes excessive from different cultural points of view and that demonstrate that boys are a couple. Some moments of the concert themselves have moved in this direction, claim the same fans and were able to rekindle the sasaengs' anger towards Seokjin.
The anger of those extreme fans would be explained by the fact that, from their point of view, the artists belong to them and the young men do not have the right to fall in love unless it is from another member that most of the fans have chosen for him. The proximity of Jungkook to Seokjin more than with Kim Taehyung, another member, would not have been at all to the taste of the fans who would have let him know in the most violent way.
Other fans, on the other hand, wisely explains that this is only skinship, a practice common in Korea among groups of artists and which does not imply a romantic relationship between artists. Indeed, in its very definition and in fact, the skinship does not correspond to romantic, intimate or sexual gestures. It is only an affectionate practice between platonic friends. Nevertheless, the skinship practiced by young artists on stage would develop the fantasy of fans and the practice of shipp, which corresponds to "the idea of two people in a relationship".
"You have to be able to distinguish between fiction and reality," one fan explained. "This means that we have the right to imagine things, the right to dream but that our dream must not exceed the limits of our imagination and more importantly, it must not have an impact on reality, on the lives of artists. Those who attacked Jin are not real fans, they believe they have all the rights over their idols, including the right to choose who they can and cannot love and worse, the right to live or die on them. This is scary, those types of fans shouldn't exist!"
Still, others add that artists do not belong to anyone and should be free to fall in love with whom they want, even if they are a member of their own group.
Moreover, it is this thought of a potential couple within the group that would have led to this attack that could therefore be perceived as a homophobic attack. This has therefore become a prime lead for investigators who will however have to focus on understanding the mechanisms of the Kpop industry to have a better approach to events. Homophobic attack or sasaengs attack, what does the poeple think?
If it turns out that only a Korean national is responsible for this attack, she will be tried by Korean justice and incur, according to her age and mental health, a prison sentence ranging from 18 months to 30 years for attempted homicide with circumstances stapled in view of the thousands of victims. This person, supposedly very young, is however already threatened with death by many fans through the entire world and will urgently be placed under police protection as soon as she has been identified.
The testimony of member Min Yoongi who hypothesizes an anti-fan attack in addition to this first attack of an extreme fan is also taken into account and it is on the internet and the fan forums that the investigation will focus in South Korea.
This would be like sharing the responsibility between a young woman who launched the attack and others who provoked fights at various places of the stadium and led to intensify the panic movement and the tragedy that we know. Some cameras allowed to show, in addition to crowd movement, what would be like fights. Fight to escape or fight between fans and anti-fans? The question remains.
The police repeat their appeal to all the spectators present on the spot who have not yet transmitted the videos taken, videos that could help greatly advance the investigation.
