Chapter 79 : A Roommate for the quarantine

Jungkook was shivering. His body temperature had risen and the fever had been accompanied by terrible headaches. Moreover, his already red nose was now running non-stop.

"Great..." he grumbled, blowing his nose loudly for the umpteenth time as he tried to concentrate on the television beyond his headache. He then threw away the paper handkerchief which joined the dozen others that were already strewn on the floor of his hospital room.

The singer had scrolled through the television channels until he came across a continuous news channel which, obviously, spoke only of the events of the past night. As everything was in French, the young man ignored the words of the journalists and concentrated on the images that were scrolling by, among which were amateur videos of people present at the concert.

The bodies that were strewn on the ground had been blurred so as not to offend the sensitivity of the viewers, but Jungkook, who had been there at the time of the events, knew exactly what was hidden behind these blurred areas, and the screams that echoed through the television weren't going to help him forget this macabre vision.

In some videos, he saw himself and other members fall from the pontoon that led to the main stage and which had been overwhelmed by the crowd. This time, he could clearly see Jin being ripped from him and swept away to fall on the opposite side of his.

If he had held Jin tighter and they had fallen to the same side, would he have escaped the stab wound that possibly cost Jin his life? Tears began to flow from Jungkook's tired eyes.

He wanted to see Jin so badly and refused to believe that he would never see him again. Jin was fine for sure. Like him, he had been saved and was going to recover, it was certain , otherwise Jungkook would have died too instead of fighting to survive...

Photos of the seven BTS members suddenly appeared on the screen. Seeing these familiar faces made Jungkook feel good even if he suspected that the reporters were mentioning their disappearance. The photos suddenly disappeared to reveal only Jungkook's face, and the latter understood that it had just been announced that he had been found. Alive.

Fans all over the world who were hanging on the news were going to be reassured by this good news.

Jungkook who did not understand wondered while looking at the images if it would allow Han and the rest of his team to find him faster. It was while watching the images scroll by that he fell back to sleep and filled with hope.

When he woke up from his nap, his headaches and fever had slightly subsided thanks to the analgesics. The sun was still flooding the room and the wall clock said it was past four o'clock, but Junkook was no longer alone in the room.

At his bedside, sitting in a chair next to him was Han, focused on his phone, next to the moving table where Jungkook's intact meal tray was, left earlier by the nurse while he was asleep.

"H-hyung?" Jungkook asked hoarsely and rubbing his eyes, as if to make sure he wasn't dreaming.

"Hi Jungkook," Han smiled behind the mask he wore, his eyes shining with unspeakable joy as he looked at Jungkook.

"Han hyung never smiles, it must be a dream," Jungkook muttered to himself, grabbing a tissue and blowing into it.

Han instantly lost his smile at those words, and his hard-featured face returned to its original appearance.

"OH MY! Hyung it's really you- ouch!" Jungkook exclaimed as he straightened up too quickly with difficulty and dropped his tissue on the ground.

"Yeah, that's me, idiot. Be careful, you're badly hurt," Han grumbled as he helped Jungkook up. He pressed the button on a controller that straightened the headboard and allowed Jungkook to sit comfortably to watch the manager at ease.

But when it was done, Jungkook didn't stay still, he threw himself into the manager's arms, hugging him with all his might.

"Wow! Is it your understanding of'being careful'?" Han exclaimed in his voice devoid of human warmth which nevertheless seemed to Jungkook that it was a warm and comforting fire in a mountain chalet, even if, amazed and rigid, the manager was unable to hug him back as he was embarrassed.

"I don't have to take care of myself now that you're here so it's okay," Jungook sobbed, head buried in man's strong chest which suddenly seemed to him to be a safe place.

Han then softened and slowly, very awkwardly, he patted Jungkook's back in a gesture that was meant to be comforting, avoiding Jungkook's injury.

"What did I do to deserve such excess affection?" he asked, surprised because their relationship had always been distant, he had taken care of it, in order to be as efficient as possible in his work with the company.

"Hyung, you found me," Jungkook sobbed. "I was completely alone and sick, and I didn't know how the others were doing, I was afraid of-"

He pulled away suddenly, remembering the question he had been asking since the day before:

"THE OTHERS! Hyung, how are the others, where are my hyungs, do you have any news?!"

"Hey, calm down Jungkook! I would have preferred first of all to know how you are but since you are so impatient, start by turning your head, you will have part of the answer."

     "Turning my head? But-"

"You really have a bad habit of always answering us back," Han cut in, putting his hand on Jungkook's head to force him to turn it to the bed next to his.

The bed was no longer empty. A person lay there, sound asleep.

      "HOBI HYUNG!!"

Han had to stop him from ripping off all the tubes connected to his body and jumping out of bed to rush to Hoseok's. Nevertheless, his piercing scream woke up the rapper whose face covered in scratches and bruises lit up when he saw that Jungkook was awake. He gave him the weak smile that his current condition allowed him.

"You are awake, Jungkookie?" his voice was particularly hoarse, and he tried in vain to clear his throat.

Jungkook lost the unequal duel with Han and had to stay on his bed but he couldn't take his eyes off Hoseok, as if his hyung could disappear at any second:

"Hyung are you okay?! Are you hurt?!"

"Calm down JK, I'm fine now. Well, except for that..."

He lifted his blanket to show his left leg securely wrapped in a long brace, from knee to ankle. Further down, his toes were covered in thick bandages. Hoseok also held up his two hands, almost all of the fingers of which were also bandaged. "I have a dislocated knee, three broken toes and four fractured fingers."

"But how..." Jungkook started with pain.

"I fell off the pontoon badly and it was my knee that took the shock. It dislocated and I had to be operated on urgently. Apart from that, like you, I got trampled by people and pulled in all directions without being able to free myself. I was saved by our bodyguards who found me in time. It's not glorious but I'm alive so I can't really complain..."

Like Jungkook, his arms were covered in bruises probably like the rest of his body, and the maknae wondered if, like him, his face was also strewn with scratches covered in crusts of dry blood on his face.

"On arriving at the hospital to find you," Han said to Jungkook, "I was told that Hoseok had also been found in this hospital. His identity was not known until after he woke up from anesthesia, right after my arrival. Consequently, I asked and obtained that we regroup you here. You are going to spend your quarantine together since you both have the Covid."

"We'll share the tissues if you'd accept to leave some for me, dear roommate," Hoseok amused, looking at the tissues strewn on the floor.

The maknae laughed as delicately as his broken ribs would allow. He was so happy to no longer be alone that he now laughed at the virus.

"And you JK, are you okay?" the rapper asked apprehensively, knowing the pain that must necessarily hide behind that laugh.

"Yes, I'm fine too, now," Jungkook confirmed with a weak smile.

"Jungkook, I was the one who pulled you out of this hellhole and had to apply first aid to you," Han replied, "your doctor also gave me your medical records and the tv showed us enough, so we know perfectly what happened to you, you don't have to pretend. Besides, I know you've been hiding a bad foot injury since the start of the tour. Why did you lie that the company doctor cleared you when no one knew?"

Jungkook's eyes widened then he said uncomfortably, sensing Hoseok's pained gaze more than Han's:

"It wasn't that bad and I didn't want to ruin the tour so I decided to- Wait!"he suddenly stopped, realizing something,  "hyung, you mean you didn't know that?"

"Of course no," Han replied. "Do you think I would have let you dance like crazy knowing your foot was like this during eight concert and as much as rehearsal?" He pointed to Jungkook's bandaged foot sticking out from under the blanket.

Jungkook was shocked, he really thought Lee told him everything and that Han was just too callous to care.

"You should never have hidden that, I even wonder how you managed so that nobody noticed. You will have to explain to me. Anyway, it doesn't matter now, this injury seems to be the least of our worries now that you got stabbed. The last time we saw each other you were near death and you had seen horrible things, how do you feel now?"

"I hardly feel anything anymore thanks to the care I received, I assure you," Jungkook said.

The morphine was definitely working miracles because in fact, he hardly felt the pain of his wounds anymore. His broken ribs could have pierced his skin to the rhythm of his breathing that he probably wouldn't have felt a thing.

"JK, hyung don't talk about your physical pain," Hoseok told him softly, his eyes worried.

"You're not the only one I found," Han added, struggling to be sensitive and careful in the choice of words, "you were with Seokjin and he was in the same state as you, so I guess you saw what happened to him and you're going to have to tell us exactly what happened because you're the only one who knows."

"JK, we can only imagine how horrible it must have been for you to see that," Hoseok said with his soft voice, trying to temper Han's overly direct words and lacking in empathy as Jungkook instantly paled at the memory of what had happened before his eyes.

Jungkook blanched and again felt his breath quicken sharply along with his heartbeat as anguish gripped him. He sat up so quickly he winced in pain but didn't care.

"Is Jin hyung okay now? Please, tell me he is. I tried to wake him up but he wasn't moving at all when I passed out and I don't think he was breathing either but he was probably just passed out because he lost a lot of blood. Did you save him too? He's in another hospital now, right?"

"Calm down Jungkook, you are too restless and you're hurting yourself if you keep mooving like that," Han said instead of answering, forcing him to lie down.

But Jungkook, seeing that he was evading the answer, struggled like hell.

"No, let go of me and tell me the truth or I swear, covid or not, I'm getting out of here and I'm going to visit all the hospitals in Paris right now!"

"Jungkook, no, wait-!" Hoseok started, seeing Jungkook trying to rip out his IV and Han scrambling to stop him from doing so.

"NO!" Jungkook yelled, visibly panicked, startling the other two. "DON'T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN TOO JUST TO HIDE THE TRUTH!!"

"That's not what we're trying to do," Hoseok defended himself, "We're just trying to protect you from yourself, you're in no state to-"

"WHERE IS JIN HYUNG?!!" Jungkook cut him again, yelling at his elder. The more the two refused to answer him, the more he began to imagine the worst while refusing to accept it.

"It's okay, I'll tell you so stop yelling," Han said, overwhelmed by Jungkook's behavior and seeing that Hoseok, more and more desperate by the situation, could not cope alone in the face of Jungkook's stubbornness either.

Jungkook, out of breath from screaming when he was so sick and drug-tired, nodded and waited motionless, but refused to lay back down so Han gave up and sighed.

"Jungkook, when I found you unconscious you were lying in a pool of blood next to Seokjin and I had to quickly diagnose you to be able to save you in the middle of all this commotion because no one was paying attention at all people who had passed out and were lying on the ground. They would have never paid attention to you and would have trampled on you like anyone else. So the first sensible thing to do was to get you out of there."

"Yes, I remember I was backstage when I regained consciousness but why wasn't Jin hyung there too if you found us both?" Jungkook asked urgently.

"Yeah, you remembered correctly," Han confirmed, "I rushed you backstage to get you to safety because your condition still allowed me to carry you, you were breathing. But given Seokjin's condition, I couldn't have done the same with him, I had to choose between you two, to be certain that I will save at least one. So I had to leave him there. It was the best solution."

"What?!" Hoseok and Jungkook cried with one voice, incredulous.

"D-did you really abandoned Jin hyung?" Hoseok asked in an outraged voice, who was obviously unaware. "You left him where he was and only took Jungkook?! What are you, a monster?!"

Han did not flinch as Jungkook took over Hoseok in this savage trial.

"How could you do that?! How could you think you should save me instead of Jin hyung?!" Jungkook cried out. "If you had to choose one, you should have chosen him, not me!!"

This time, Hoseok, obviously not agreeing with him looked at him with wide eyes and Han shook his head.

"You don't know what you're saying," Han replied coldly, "you weren't dreaming Jungkook, Seokjin wasn't breathing, and his heart had stopped. I haven't quantified the value of both of your lifes as you seem to think. You were just luckier than him, you were alive and he wasn't, choosing you was obvious to me. If I had tried to resuscitate him by giving him cardiac massage, I might have drained him even more of his blood and during that time, it was you who would have drained your blood and lost your life. Then we would have lost you both. You had a better chance of getting out, it's that simple. And you finally made it out alive so I can't regret my choice, even if obviously, I would have liked to save you both."

Dead silence followed his words and Hoseok began to cry silently under the distraught gaze of Han.

Jungkook took the time to realize what he had just heard. Then, tears formed in his eyes and unable to hold it any longer, he released those streams of pain and grabbed his aching chest, convinced that his heart was beating so fast that it would eventually stop if he did nothing to calm it down. So he preferred to lie to himself and said with conviction while crying:

"No," he shook his head, "not Jin hyung, not him, it's not true, you lie. Go get him now, tell him I'm waiting for him!!"

"Jungkook, listen to me-" Han said with an unusual gentleness that made Jungkook realize he wasn't lying and that made him mad with pain.

"NO, MY HYUNG IS NOT DEAD!!! OTHERWISE I WOULD BE DEAD TOO BECAUSE I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT HIM!!" he yelled, punching Han's chest with all his might without stopping, without the man deigning to defend himself.

Han looked at Jungkook with pity and Jungkook looked at Han with a look filled with an explosive mixture of sadness, pain and hatred. Because to Jungkook who could no longer think clearly, Han was the one who had abandoned Jin and condemned him. In that, he had done worse than Lee in his eyes, because he had taken his hyung from him. Forever.

Hoseok inconsolable, watched the scene silently except when his sniffles were loud. He knew he probably should have stopped Jungkook who weakly hit Han relentlessly but he didn't feel like it. Jungkook had every right to be sad and angry. He had every right because he had lost the person closest to his heart. His soul mate. How to bear such pain without externalizing it?

Han again tried to calm down Jungkook but he was the last person who could have done it at that moment:

"You survived because you fought to see all your hyungs again, Jungkook. You've been strong for them ! And now, even if it's hard, even if it's seems impossible for you,  I'm asking you to stay strong for a little longer because you haven't lost everything. There is still hope-"

Jungkook shot him a glazed look which scared Han as he was devoid of life. There was no longer a trace of sadness, pain and anger. There was just...nothing.

"Hope?" Jungkook repeated in a suddenly too calm tone. For Han and Hoseok, it was a frightening calm that followed his outburst of pain.

"Yes, Jungkook, you have to keep-" Han began.

"You're saying nonsense," Jungkook cut him,  looking down at his hands covered in the dry blood of Jin and his own. His eyes then slid to the needle that continued to supply him with blood. "I did lose everything yesterday. If you didn't save him, then you didn't save me either. And if hyung is dead, then I'm dead too."

"JUNGKOOK NO!!" Hoseok suddenly screamed in horror seeing what Jungkook was doing.

Before Han could do anything, Jungkook ripped the needle from his arm and stuck it into his back wound with a howl of pain that echoed the howl of horror Hoseok let out at the same time.
