Chapter 67 : The company's decision

Jungkook displayed part of the chat that mentioned Jin's death in excruciating pain. He didn't want to read them aloud because it hurt him. He imagined Jin discovering those horrors last night, alone, while himself slept peacefully next to him.

It was indeed not just about ruining the concert; it was much more serious than that and it was even necessary that the people who had uttered such horrors be punished by justice. The company had to notify the police immediately for an investigation.

The two singers joined the others for breakfast and Jin didn't fail to sense the worried looks Jimin was giving him, so he forced himself to keep smiling and try to lighten the mood. But when Hoseok suddenly spoke up to say that the night had allowed him to see things from a different perspective and that he wanted to continue giving all his love to their Army, by definitively maintaining the tour, Jimin and Jungkook protested quickly:

"Do you sincerely want to maintain it?!" The first retorted.

"Even after reading the horrible threats sent during the live?!" the second exclaimed, who had more freshly in mind the sentences he had read that morning.

"But Jimin and JK, weren't you the ones who, just yesterday, were the most ardent defenders of maintaining the tour and reuniting with the thousands of fans who is awaiting us?" Hoseok asked, confused, before turning to the eldest "Jin hyung, you were right yesterday when you said that we know how to handle this kind of situation: by just ignore threats and only give love."

After his discovery during the night, Jin was no longer completely sure of himself and even doubted that he was the author of those wise words that Hoseok had brought back. But he still wanted to defend the maintenance of the tour, for his dongsaengs. Nevertheless, before he could open his mouth, Jungkook protested :

"Hobi hyung, don't ask Jin hyung to defend the maintain of the concert, it is unfair, not after what he read!"

"You let Jin hyung read the comments?!" Jimin exploded, giving Jungkook an accusing look and a sad look at Jin.

"Hey Jiminie! I'm okay, don't worry." Jin said with a smile that was intended to be reassuring but that Jungkook mercilessly destroyed.

"No he's not, he's lying," the maknae replied looking at Jimin.

"Jungkook say you're lying hyung," Jimin said, looking

"You annoying kid!" Jin exclaimed while rolling his eyes at Jungkook who shrugged his shoulders as if to say he wasn't sorry.

Then, the oldest, turned again to speak to Jimin:

"I was sad in the face of this outpouring of hatred, it's true but I saw a lot of Army defending me and there is another thing that made me happy beyond imaginable when I realized it.

"What is it?" Jimin asked, curious.

"I understood that Jiminie loved me to the point of being ready to become my shield by asking for the same haircut as me to cheat the enemy. It sincerely touched me, you are a very precious little brother."

The other members except Jungkook let out a cry of surprise at this sudden realization and were seized with both a wave of panic at the risk-taking, but also a wave of tenderness towards of Jimin and his empathy.

The maknae, however, put an end to this atmosphere charged with tenderness by replying ironically with a scary face:

"Yes but... Ji-mi-nie... know that Hyung also planned to shave your head himself to prevent you from taking risks for him. He wasn't just happy, he was also pissed, isn't that what you said, hyung? " He asked turning to Jin.

Jimin gave a horrified look at Jungkook then at Jin who replied with a deep voice and a face as scary as Jungkook's:

"That's right," he agreed, showing a threatening smile and getting up to join Jimin who curled up on his chair, laughing nervously, hands above his head, wondering for a moment if Jin was serious.

But Jin didn't touch his hair and just hug him from behind, his arm around his neck and his head on his shoulder, whispering:

      "Thank you, Jiminie."

"Fortunately or unfortunately," Namjoon said, looking at them fondly, "neither of you will likely have to take the slightest risk. Considering what has been said in the comments, even in English, I have been attentive, it is unthinkable that the tour will continue. The company will have to prevent it."

An icy wind of sadness and disappointment suddenly cooled the room. It was probably for the best, but it was no less difficult to accept.

The boys were summoned at the end of the morning to the premises of the company, in the presence of their managers and the CEO. Band Si-Hyuk recapitulated the situation and announced the decision taken.

"After careful consideration with all the executives of the company's management as well as your managers, we have decided to keep the tour going."

The tone was firm, without appeal.

However, protests erupted at the same time, not always understandable:

     "But Bang PD-nim, you can't!"

     "Even after what you've read?!"

     "It was horrible... "

     "... terrible threats ..."

     "... scary ..."

     "... risks too big ..."

     " ...Please!"

The last cry of the heart was Jimin's. It had pierced through the indistinct chaos of protest.

" Shut up, all of you boys!" Han stopped them, "you are disrespectful. The decision was made as a team, with about ten people empowered to make this decision, and PD-nim has just announced the final decision."

Namjoon was aghast. Han was his last hope, but he had failed to change the decision. Well, almost the last. He turned to Lee who could only shrug. He said:

"We weighed all pros and cons before making this decision, there was a vote that did not prevent the tour from continuing, even if we obviously carried your voice in this crisis meeting. It was decided that the threat was clear and could be managed. It's like that boys, you have to accept it."

"I'm sure he said that but he also voted to maintain," Jungkook whispered discreetly to Jin, so that no one could hear him except him.

Jin nodded. To vote to suspend the tour and receive all the annoyance from the fans would almost be like shooting yourself in the foot. Jin even doubted that Han actually did it, but Namjoon seemed to have expected a lot from the managers as the disappointment painted on his face. Lee was still posing as a perfect manager in the eyes of the other members and the CEO, it was filthy to watch.

"You've been faced with this kind of threat before," the CEO said, looking particularly at Jimin who understood that this story had been mentioned during the discussion that had been conducted, "and the precautions taken have helped, if they were not empty threats, to counter this threat. Our company is now more powerful than in the past, and the world must understand that we are able to protect our artists. Which we will do for sure."

This reassured the members a little, but the unease persisted. Didn't the CEO read the precise description some fans were giving of how Jin was to die in excruciating pain? Did he really take it lightly?

As if he had read their minds, Lee said:

"This time, the tour was threatened, that's right, but Seokjin was the only member directly targeted by death threats. We are not going to cancel the tour for threats against a single member."

"You mean because Jin is the only one explicitly targeted, it doesn't matter?" Yoongi intervened gravely, shocked.

"Why are you jumping like that?" Lee replied, glaring at Yoongi. "You think I don't want to protect Seokjin like everyone here?"

Yoongi didn't answer, preferring to give him a disillusioned look. Jin and Jungkook discreetly exchanged a knowing look: Lee didn't care about Jin's safety, only his position as BTS manager and his bank account. They had to stop themselves from expressing any emotion in front of everyone and had to listen to Lee continue his lies.

"Obviously, Seokjin's safety is my priority and I will do everything to protect him." Lee reacted giving Jin an ugly smile which gave him unpleasant tingling in his broken finger. "Seokjin, do you doubt my good will towards you?"

Yoongi immediately turned to Jin to see his reaction and Jin looked at him before answering because he wanted to yell at him not to believe what he was going to say and to continue defending him against Lee who pretended to want to protect him even though he only lived to make him suffer.

But he only had one person who knew the truth and stood by his side, and it wasn't Yoongi. He squeezed Jungkook's hand tightly under the table, making him realize that his words were meant for him and not Lee:

"Of course not, I know you do your best to protect me."

Bang Si-hyuk nodded appreciatively faced with this reassuring interaction between the artist and his manager before calming down Yoongi in a soft voice that would however not tolerate a disrespectful response:

"Yoongi, calm down, that's not what Lee is trying to say. You can't create dissension between you when you need to trust your managers even more in this exceptional situation."

Yoongi didn't seem sorry for saying what he said but he lowered his head and nodded, under the disappointed eyes of Jin who saw Yoongi fall for Lee's lies again. And by his own lies.

But strangely, another person had a reaction of rejection at what Lee had said : Han. He seemed to be shocked by his colleague's harsh, almost callous words about Jin. It only lasted a few seconds before resuming his impassive face but Jin thought was almost certain to have seen it. Then, Han coolly tempered Lee's words, without any invisible empathy on his face and in his voice too, despite everything:

"What we mean by that is that, since only one person is explicitly referred to among you, our task of protecting you is no longer overwhelming. We will strengthen security by particularly controlling entrances and will be very attentive to the slightest overflow. Jimin has already been the target of such threats and the concert took place nonetheless, right?"

"But it wasn't the same," Namjoon refuted, "it really was an isolated person in Jimin's case. Here we have a single individual who threatened to ruin our concert and evoking something terrible without saying what, but a host of a lot of others who threatened Jin hyung with death. The situation is different, can't you see that?"

"Those are still people threatening you behind a screen, nothing change," the CEO said. Obviously, a threat should not be taken lightly, and the compagny have already launched legal action against those people whom the police will try to find by any means. Because it is cyber harassment that can earn them heavy legal penalties. We will not let them go, to prove to them that they cannot threaten you with impunity.

But until proven clear, these only remain threats and canceling the concert for a few haters will lead to the birth of thousands more who will be fans disappointed of your cancellation. And disappointed is an euphemism when it comes to your fans."

Before the young men could say anything, Lee continued, under the watchful eye of the CEO who approved of the two managers' words as the discussion progressed:

"Now let's talk about the shippers. They may be the start of this outbreak of violence, but not necessarily. However, we will take our precautions and for that, you will have to be careful to distribute your interactions fairly. We don't want to see the hashtag 'jinkook' popping up all over the web during the tour."

It was low-key, but Jin and Jungkook were the only ones who could see the corners of Lee's lips stretch into a mocking smile as his gaze traveled over each face but weighed heavily on the younger and eldest.

The man was obviously taunting them badly, because he was the only one who knew the true nature of their relationship. He said he was going to make them pay for it and it started with forcing them to be publicly distant again.

"Now on to your solos," Han resumed, "Even though it's a bit late to make these changes, it is necessary. Seokjin, your song 'Abyss' is too dark, almost gloomy and evokes feelings that are too negative for this tour placed under the sign of hope, life and renewal. We decided that you won't sing it and just replace it with "Moon".

Jin, who had been working hard on his song, felt his jaw drop in surprise and despair. He felt Jungkook's compassionate hand on his arm but braced himself to defend his song anyway:

     "But... "

"No 'but'," Han cut him roughly, "you'll be posting your song later online but for now, you have to put it aside. 'Abyss' is not made for this tour, you have to get used to it. Likewise, Jungkook, you will sing 'Euphoria' in place of 'Still with me 'which is tinged with an obscure and confused sadness and meaning. You will share it later. You have to sing for the happiness of your fans and put your fears aside. For this tour, don't think of yourself, just think of your fans. You've been away from touring for two years, they've been waiting for you for too long and you have to give them a smile."

It was Jungkook's turn to look devastated. The other members were just as disappointed for them, who were still unaware of the content of their song. With the exception of Namjoon who knew most of the songs of the group since he had helped to write them but who did not know anything about the new song of Jungkook.

The leader knew he had written this song in reaction to finding Jin's one filled with pain, so maybe Han was right saying that the song was too dark for the tour, but it was none the less sad.

Everyone had worked hard on the writing and the composition: for Jin and Jungkook, this decision was difficult to accept. Even if the concert was held, the content of their souls would remain silent and would not reach the ears and hearts of their precious fans.

     Bang Si-hyuk concluded:

"It's the heart of your business, remember : think about what your fans want above all else, not what your anti-fans want, those who hate you and what yourself want. Not in the times we live in. After being absent from the concert stages for so long, if we cancel this tour, you will lose a large part of your fans who will turn to other kpop groups and as a result, yours will soon disappear no matter how popular you are current.

I've been in this business long enough to know that a band's popularity is fleeting and based solely on public opinion. Disappoint your fans and you will lose everything. And the same company will no longer be able to ensure the longevity of BTS. So don't disappoint them.

After so much hardship for each of your fans during the pandemic, they expect joy, not further desperation expressed by their idols. In this way, we will preserve a happy atmosphere among the crowd of fans and further avoid their negativity. The world tour is therefore maintained, there is nothing more to add."
