Chapter 61 : Nickname games

"Tell me that again?" Namjoon asked, bewildered.

Han and the members were all were all gathered around a table at the hotel restaurant where they had sat down to have their breakfast and their gaze was fixed on Jin's plastered hand which he wore in a sling.

"I stupidly broke my finger playing with Jungkook last night, I'm sorry," Jin repeated, embarrassed but wearing a beaming smile and slipping an arm over the shoulder of the maknae sitting next to him to mean that there was no tension between Jungkook and him.

The same dumbfounded silence as in his first explanation, which had not changed, followed his words. Everyone turned to Han who was glaring at Jin harshly as if it was all his fault, but silently sipping his coffee.

"Did you take them to hospital hyung?" Namjoon asked.

"Lee did" Han replied, "but I'm the one who's supposed to write this ridiculous press release since he's still asleep. I'm still thinking of the best words to pass this off as something other than a joke."

"And... do you have the doctor's report? Can Jin hyung start the world tour with us?" Namjoon asked.

"Of course I can," Jin replied before Han could respond.

"Jin hyung, I know why I'm asking Han hyung and not you," Namjoon said back in a firm voice, "I know you want to participate in the tour completely with us but if you're not in a condition to do so, then you won't do it for the time necessary for your recovery, we won't let you do that."

Jin would have liked to reveal that the one who was really in no condition to start the tour with them in a normal way was rather Junkook and his burned foot on which he could only land thanks to a thick layer of bandages and socks in a pair very wide and comfortable sneakers. Dancing would be a completely different game, it was certain.

But Jungkook was condemned to silence and it was on Jin that all eyes were on. Then on Han when he said distractedly:

"Yeah, he can start the tour normally with you, he'll just avoid any physical contact with his hand and limit the use of painkillers during concerts."

"Can I see the medical report? I want to read the recommendations myself," Namjoon objected.

Han winced in annoyance while getting up:

"I don't have it, Lee has it. Listen, I know you're worried but I told you it was gonna be alright. Anyway, a medical team accompanies us during the tour, if something goes wrong, Seokjin will be taken care of, stop panicking Namjoon or you will transmit your anxiety to everyone. If Seokjin says he feels capable, then he is capable. Hurry up to finish eating boys, you have a live to do very soon."

With those words, he left the breakfast table leaving behind only his empty cup of coffee.

"Why does he always have to be so callous?" Jimin complained.

"Even an ice cube ends up melting. Guess our Han has a colder and harder heart than an ice cube, so don't expect too much from him," Taehyung remarked.

"Hyung, are you really going to be okay?" Namjoon asked Jin, ignoring Han who was visibly upset about the situation but wasn't the one in pain and couldn't speak for Jin.

"It'll be okay Namjoonie, I promise you," Jin assured as he put his uninjured hand on Namjoon's shoulder. "I won't ruin the tour, don't worry."

"The more you talk like this the more I feel like I have to worry hyung," the leader mumbled, before calming down nonetheless. "Don't think about the tour or us, think about yourself for once: you have to take care of yourself first. Say us right away if you're not filling well or if it hurt too much, okay?"

"Okay doctor Kim, I will," Jin made fun of him.

"Please, don't laugh now or I won't trust you," Namjoon said, frowning.

"Okay, okay, don't be mad at me."

"Hyung, are you really sure you hurt yourself that badly just playing?" Yoongi asked, probing Jin's expression to see if he was being sincere.

"Of course, why would I lie?" Jin replied, his throat tight from lying in the face of his dongsaengs. He had become too good a liar for his own taste lately.

The others exchanged a knowing look that Jin and Jungkook did their best to ignore because they knew that appearances were against them or rather against Jungkook.

"Jungkook, you should really control your strength, Jin hyung's fingers are too fragile to match you," Jimin said, kindly.

"Yeah, I'm really sorry, I'll be careful now,"Jungkook said, very embarrassed to blame himself for Jin's injury in front of others instead of Lee.

If Han knew what happened, especially that Lee was responsible, he didn't say anything to the other BTS members and it was Jungkook who had to take responsibility. What had Lee told Han to make him agree to hide the truth from the other members? Probably not much considering the heart of stone which seemed to be made of a material similar to that of Lee's sharp heart.

The rest of the members wanted to avoid highlighting that Jin's latest injury had already been inflicted by Jungkook, knowing that the two had only just reconciled after weeks marked by a painful separation for all of them, but the coincidence was surprising: Jin and Jungkook had barely found each other and by morning a new serious injury had appeared.

"I know what it looks like from here," Jin said, sounding reassuring as he shamefully used his acting skills to lie to his own band, "but it really is an innocent accident, I assure you."

"I'm sure they started again playing fight like kids, just like they used to," Hoseok said to relax the atmosphere heavy with undertones, smiling cheerfully and Jin gave him a radiant smile. "A lot of people already call them Tom and Jerry, always fighting like school terrible kids."

      "I'm Jerry," Jungkook said immediately.

"Yaaaa!" Jin protested, "does that make me Tom? Do you think I'm the idiot of the two of us?"

"Hyung, are you sincerely asking?" Yoongi asked a falsely outraged Jin, "you keep wanting to fight this muscular guy and still think you have a chance to beat him when all hope is now in vain," he finished dramatically.

"Yes, Jin hyung," Jimin told him gently, "you can't fight like you used to with Jungkook now that he's boxing. It doesn't really surprise me that he broke your finger with his fist seeing how strong he became."

"Did you start boxing?" Jin asked, surprised as he turned to Jungkook who nodded with a smile and stood up before hopping around the table, beating the air with his fists effervescently, brimming with the energy of youth.

"So, you didn't know, hyung!" Taehyung exclaimed, triumphant, addressing Jin as Jungkook continued to beat the air. Taehyung was visibly impatient at the thought of what he was going to reveal to Jin: "Jungkook was too he was frustrated being away from you during the last few weeks and as he was running his nerves on us, we blew him the idea of getting started boxing. That brat loved it and put his heart into it, watch him now!"

He lowered his head as Jungkook pretended to punch him in the face while still hopping in place comically enough. At first surprised by this news, Jin quickly had a mischievous smile.

"Hey, JK! I found what I was going to call you from now on: kangaroo!"

Jungkook stopped hopping as everyone else laughed at the appropriateness of the nickname, each suddenly having in mind a real combat-fit kangaroo jumping around them.

"Hyuuung, that's a humiliating nickname!" Jungkook complained.

"But it looks good on you!" Jin laughed.

"Then can I call you Yeobo? "

Jin stopped laughing and froze in his chair as the others stared blankly at Jungkook.

"Yeobo? Why this nickname?" Namjoon asked as Yoongi and Jin's eyes each sent warning signals to Jungkook in their own way.

"Because it's affectionately humiliating and I don't see why I'm going to be the one suddenly with a ridiculous nickname."

Jungkook proud of himself winked at Jin who rolled his eyes. That same morning, when Jungkook asked him, "Can I call you yeobo?" Jin's response had made him sulk like a kid because Jin had strictly forbidden him to call him yeobo in front of anyone because of all the connotation that the word carried: it was indeed a title normally reserved for married couples.

It was true that many unmarried couples used it in Korea but it was precisely to give their couple the same strength as that of a married couple. And for Jin, it was unthinkable that their newly born secret couple let itself unmask in such a ridiculous way.

Yet, Jungkook was a stubborn person and he hadn't given up despite Jin's refusal, seizing the first opportunity he had to give the nickname to others as a joke:

"If I'm kangaroo, then you'll be yeobo," he laughed as he watched Jin's face slowly regain composure, the latter having had the impression of narrowly escaping the disaster.

"Since we're in the nickname overhaul, can I stay sunshine?" Hoseok asked hopefully.

"No, we said ridiculous nicknames," Jin refused, "you'll be Mad Legs."

The merry dance leader of the group gladly accepted the nickname by showing a smile brighter than ever and stood up to begin a small dance in which the legs moved so fast that there was no longer any doubt as to the relevance of the nickname.

"In this case Jimin will no longer be Mochi but Sexy Mochi!" Taehyung shouted, pulling up Jimin's cheeks, whose well-defined jawline gave a mature air to that once plump face giving him the appearance of a cherub in the pass.

"Then you will be Sleepy Creepy" Jimin replied to Taehyung, also sliding his fingers over his friend's face to open his eyelids excessively, as Taehyung was known for his nocturnal lagophthalmos, his inability to completely close the eyelids during his sleep, which had initially frightened them all when they started sleeping with him in the same room.

"It's my superpower, I'm not ashamed of it," Taehyung retorted, smiling. "I can sleep knowing what's going on around me.

"Pffff, lier," Jimin said, "I did unmentionable things in front of your sleepwalking eyes and you never knew it."

Taehyung opened his eyes and mouth wide, wondering what Jimin could have done as horror in front of his poor open but blind eyes.

Jin, who had overheard their conversation, had instantly lost his smile. He hurriedly pushed out of his mind the memory of the day Lee had watched porn with him before abuse him in Taehyung's room, while Taehyung's eyes were yet open. The reality was that Taehyung, fortunately or unfortunately, didn't have this super power and couldn't see while sleeping. Otherwise, he would have been traumatized for life, like Jungkook and himself surely already were now.

"Namjoon will be Dimples of Destruction instead of the God of Destruction because his cute dimples break more hearts than his hands break objects," Hoseok scoffed, thrusting a finger into the dimple that had just appeared on the smiley face of their leader.

Finally, they all turned to Yoongi who immediately grumbled:

     "I don't want a nickname."

"Grumpy Grandpa!" Taehyung exclaimed, holding to stretch the corners of Yoongi's lips downward to make him wince.

They all burst out laughing except for Yoongi who however accepted with an embarrassed smile the nickname that suited him perfectly. It had been a long time since they had laughed like this, all together it made everyone's hearts feel relieved.

"But we're not even going to call Jin hyung 'Yeobo', even though we love you with all our hearts obviously hyung," Namjoon said, embarrassed.

"No, obviously we're not,," Yoongi agreed, looking curiously at Jungkook again, wondering why, of all the possible nicknames, he had thought of this one because he was conviced that in order to reconcile with Jin, the maknae had to swallow the abnormal feelings he had felt for a time towards Jin.

But the eldest of rappers preferred not to move the knife in the freshly stitched wound and preferred not to question Jungkook unduly, eager for Jin to return to his original place within the group without the strange feelings of the younger to disrupt this normal order.

"No, I have a better one, the fake maknae ... the matnae!" Jimin added, interrupting Yoongi's train of dark thoughts.

"NOOOO!" Yoongi complained with obvious desperation, "please let Jin hyung be the eldest again, I can't take it anymore!"

They burst out laughing again, which did them good. Their group was once again filled with a sense of happiness that, definitely, no one wanted to spoil by evoking doubts about Jin's explanation for his new injury.

They never wanted to see their group tear and fall apart like in the past few weeks and if for that reason, they had to avoid being too interested in certain worrying abnormal signals, they would do so. So, they accepted his explanations without constraint and simply allowed themselves to be overcome by that feeling of bliss that had taken hold of the group.

Jin smiled with obvious joy, because despite all the horror he had experienced last night with Jungkook, he felt like he had found a reason to be happy again. He was simply happy to really take back his place in the group, alongside everyone.

His phone suddenly rang. He apologized to the others and stood up to answer in the hallway. He already had his phone glued to his ear when Jungkook grabbed his arm and questioned him with his face regarding the identity of the caller.

Before walking away, Jin drew the word "eomma" on his lips. It was very rare for his mother to call him, so he imagined that it must be important.
