Chapter 49 : The leader of BTS

Namjoon was sick of himself, he couldn't get over his poor judgment. Nothing definitively proved Jungkook's guilt and the latter had never confirmed it, on the contrary since Yoongi had explained to Namjoon that Jungkook had formally denied these accusations during their one-to-one discussion.

But they still accused Jungkook of being responsible for Jin's suffering, even though the maknae did everything to keep Jin by his side and make him happy. Maybe it was even their explicit suspicions of him that drove Jungkook over the edge.

He may have felt so rejected, unjustly accused, that he clung to Jin by all means and when Jin said it was better for them to get away from each other, he couldn't endured. It was all speculation, but now the door was open to any guesswork in Namjoon's mind.

Even though Jin and Jungkook had ended up arguing and falling out, it didn't prove that Jungkook was capable of causing Jin an anxiety attack. What had possibly gone through their minds to believe Jungkook guilty? The maknae must have been hurt and must badly be angry with them.

Namjoon almost hoped he was wrong and that Jungkook was indeed the culprit. So himself wouldn't feel so miserable right now.

He quickly read through the rest of Jungkook's notebook, not understanding the mysterious mention "Cookie is not Kookie" but understanding well the continuation of strategies which had been carried out to regain the lost heart of Jin after their violent argument, when Jungkook had disfigured Jin.

All of these strategies ended in failure, of course, since everyone knew that Jin was no longer talking to Jungkook. That he hardly spoke at all, in fact. Jungkook had not only tried to reconcile the two of them but he had also established strategies to make him smile again, soothe him, make him happy...

Nothing had worked. Jin looked broken, but Namjoon now wondered if it was just because of their argument. Perhaps there was something else behind Jin's unhappiness, something older and uncomfortably expressed in his song. Did it have anything to do with the secret of Strategy 5?

     "Jungkook?" Namjoon called softly.

The slightly dozing maknae groaned before opening his eyes.

"Sorry I fell asleep. Have you finished Namjoon hyung? What time is it?"

     "No, I haven't finished. I didn't even start, actually."

"What?! But what have you been doing for all that time?!" The maknae seemed in a bad mood, but that didn't really change him from the last few days: when things didn't go the way he wanted, he immediately let it know with a sudden change of mood.

"Calm down Jungkook, we're going to talk calmly... about this."

Namjoon took the notebook in his hands and displayed it wide open in front of the maknae on the last page of his strategies. Jungkook widened his eyes in surprise before resuming his composure:

"Oh that? It's a strategy game that I started a long time ago, but it's not fun anymore, so i stopped updating it. Now I just focus on the lyrics of my songs."

"Jungkook, I understood exactly what it was," Namjoon sighed and Jungkook cursed the  sagacity of his leader who seemed to have read between the lines perfectly. "This is a war that you fought alone for long enough: you can talk to me about it now, I will help you as much as possible."

"I don't know what you're talking about..." Jungkook began, ready to deny the rapper's words.

"'Preventing a soldier from deserting the company', the soldier is Jin hyung, isn't it?"Namjoon suddenly asked, taking Jungkook by surprise.

"N-no, you are wrong," the maknae said immediately.

"'Fighting a common enemy' , that's about the company, about Big Hit, isn't it?" Namjoon continued, without giving the youngest respite in order to corner him.

"You're ridiculous, really, it's just a fantasy out of my imagination!"

"The two vengeful generals are Lee and Han, aren't they?

"Stop it, Namjoon hyung!" Jungkook got angry, feeling he was losing this battle of truth against his leader when he couldn't let him win.

"The terrible secret to keep..." Namjoon began.

     "THAT'S ENOUGH!" Jungkook shouted.

Suddenly, he was no longer angry, but he looked stressed. He stood up, towering over his seated elder with his imposing stature, and snatched the notebook from Namjoon's hand.

"You had to read my song, nothing else. Not that... " His voice broke.

"But now I've read it," Namjoon said softly, "and I can't pretend I haven't."

He stood up suddenly and hugged the maknae.

"I'm sorry Jungkook," he said with a heavy heart.

"Why?" Jungkook asked, letting amazement take over his earlier feelings.

He didn't return Namjoon's hug, his arms hanging limply along his body and his right hand dropping the notebook to the floor.

"For not supporting you. For leaving you alone. For accusing you of things you weren't guilty of... the list is so long! In your notebook, you spoke of the duty of brotherhood and fellowship to Jin, but I did not respect that duty to you. Please, forgive me."

"Did... did you understand everything?" Jungkook asked, still in shock.

"Almost everything. There are still some gray areas. But I didn't understand one thing in particular: why did you give up your war? Why did you surrender? Why did you give up on Jin hyung?"

Namjoon released the maknae and looked him in the eye. The latter turned away.

"You can't give up after all the efforts you put in, it doesn't look like you" the rapper insisted, "you are our Golden Maknae, remember? The one who succeeds in everything he does with the strength of his will, who never give up until he succeeds. You can't give up, Jungkook. Jin hyung needs you."

"Jin hyung hasn't forgiven me and he doesn't want me by his side anymore, that's all. He doesn't need me like I need him. I can't be selfish anymore and make him stay with me if he doesn't want to. I came to terms with that idea and he's certainly happier without me."

     "You are seriously mistaken, Jungkook!"

"How do you know? Jin hyung would have come back to me already if it wasn't," Jungkook said shaking his head because he had already done what he could and had no hope now.

Namjoon was wrong, it was obvious to him.

But Namjoon was not going to give up in front of the youngest, he had no right. He had to finally become a leader worthy of the name again and make sure everything was back to normal.

He handed Jungkook his phone on which was displayed a message from Jin with the lyrics to his new song Abyss.

     "Read that," he ordered.

Unconvinced, Jungkook nevertheless agreed to pick up Namjoon's phone and began to read.

I hold my breath and enter my ocean

I face beautiful yet sadly crying me

Myself in the darkness

I want to find you and tell you

Today, I want to get to know you even more, yeah

Still, I remain with myself

My voice doesn't come out, I just circle around

That dark place that I wanted to be lost in, I want to go there

I'll be there

Today again, I circle around you

The closer I get to you, the more I become breathless

And it feels like you arе getting even furthеr away

Maybe you went deeper into that sea, yeah

Myself in that sea

I want to find you and tell you

Today, I want to get to know you even more, yeah

Still, I remain with myself

My voice doesn't come out, I just circle around

That dark place that I wanted to be locked in, I want to go there

I'll be there

Today again, I close my eyes by your side

Jungkook silently read the text and little by little his face expressed the pain he felt facing the desperate words of his hyung. Seeing that he had finished reading, the leader asked him gravely:

"So to you, Jungkook, does Jin hyung seem happy away from you?"
