Chapter 28: Stopover at the convenience store
They stayed on this beach for a long time after the other members' desperate attempts to contact them, until the middle of the night. The place was deserted, as out of the real world, the sound of the waves filling the comfortable silence they had immersed themselves in. Here they forgot the problems that awaited them outside and surrounded them on all sides.
They only made up their mind to leave after Yoongi's fiery message sent to their two phones threatening to have them reported missing to their managers and the authorities if they didn't respond immediately and hurry home. When Jin revealed to him where they were, Yoongi exploded:
"What?! Hanagae beach?! But why have you gone so far at such a late hour, have you completely tunred insane today?!"
"I wasn't the driver so don't yell at me please" Jin pouted.
"Then pass me Jungkook, I want to talk to him!"
Jungkook who had heard, shook his head sharply to prevent Jin from passing the phone to him.
"He's not gonna talk to me, he's gonna yell at me," he whispered.
"He's driving," Jin lied.
"Hey, don't lie to me! I can't hear the engine, you're still not on your way back!" the second oldest exasperated.
"Um, sorry, we're on our way back to the car now, I promise" Jin apologized with a small laugh and putting the other on loudspeaker to allow Jungkook to hear clearly.
"Don't laugh, it's serious hyung!" the rapper replied.
"I know, I know, I'm sorry" Jin told him, "don't worry, we'll hurry home."
"Not too fast, drive carefully, I don't want to hear that you had an accident."
"Hey, I'm the best driver of us all!" Jungkook retorted with pride.
"Right," Yoongi said, "But don't forget that overconfidence leads to recklessness."
The maknae rolled his eyes as Jin suppressed another laugh.
"Why are you becoming a moralizing grandfather again?" Jungkook complained.
On the other end of the phone, Jin and Jungkook heard Jimin burst out laughing at Jungkook's words and the two could only imagine laughing at the murderous glare Yoongi gave Jimin.
"Why? You really ask why Jungkook? The guy next to you almost died today, I have no right to be worried?" Yoongi replied, irritated.
"Thanks Yoongi," Jin replied before Jungkook replied with another scathing remark and made the exchange drag on as they got to the car. "We will be careful. But you're very cute today Yoongichi," he teased sweetly.
The other replied with a muffled grunt before hanging up. Reluctantly, Jin and Jungkook got into the car and drove back to their dorm in Hanam-dong.
"Hey, hyung, wake up."
Jin opened his eyes feeling Jungkook shaking him. He didn't remember falling asleep and realized they were alrady back in Seoul. Dizzy with sleep, he looked around and saw that he was not yet in Hanam-Dong. The place was very bright thanks to the night lighting and he realized that Jungkook had stopped in front of a convenience store. He looked at the time displayed on the dashboard. 2:35 a.m.
"Why did we stop here?" Jin asked hoarsely with confusion after yawning.
"I'm hungry, aren't you?" Jungkook asked unfastening his belt.
"You're really looking to get killed by Yoongi," Jin pointed out, "besides, there's already food at home, I know it very well since it was I who cooked everything like a mademan this morning, no need to eat outside."
"Oh come on, I feel like eating ramyeons at the convenient store like a normal guy tonight, and besides, you're the oldest, if I'm with you, Yoongi won't have the right to kill me."
"Yes, that's right, I forgot he gives me absolute confidence in my role as an elder" Jin ironized, "ah and you on the other hand forgot that he'll kill me for leaving you do that when I'm the oldest. " Seeing Jungkook roll his eyes, he added : "Jungkook, I promised him we were going home, we really should be going home now."
"And why would we have to go back to the dorm now? Hyung, we have already returned to Seoul and we only have a few minutes to go to the Hanam-Dong, a few minutes to eat, it won't change much. I just don't want to go home right away."
Jungkook's voice was almost pleading. In reality, he wanted Jin to clear his mind a little longer to escape at least temporarily from the mental prison that Lee had imposed on him. Back in the dorm, all that pressure would suddenly fall on his shoulders.
"Fine," Jin finally sighed, but at 3am, we'll have to be gone, okay?"
"Okay!" Jungkook said happily, putting his mask back on his nose before getting out of the car followed by Jin.
The convenience store was open 24 hours a day and allowed anyone who was hungry at night to come and buy what they wanted or even sit down to enjoy a hot meal. Indeed, boiling water dispensers made it possible to cook instant noodles in the fastest and most practical way possible.
That's what Jin and Jungkook did when they discovered the place was deserted except for the dozing employee. They chose and paid for their ramyeon before sitting down at a table and waiting for the noodles to finish cooking.
Finally, they took off their masks and ate their nocturnal meal with relish, talking about everything and nothing, forgetting without realizing the problems that have arisen. Even if it was temporary, it did them good.
Even after they finished gobbling their ramyeon, they continued to chat without seeing the time pass, a topic of conversation by always bringing a new one. They ended up realizing that they really had to go on vacation away from the agency and away from Korea.
"How about Tahiti?" Jin asked, dreaming of white sand beach and turquoise water.
"Nah, it's a French overseas department, that means too many people will know us," Jungkook objected.
"How do you know that? How come you know everything?!" Jin pouted, making Jungkook chuckled.
"I don't know, school? Didn't you go there too?"
"You arrogant kid! Of course I went to school but strangely, when I hear you I have the impression that part of the school program is missing from my memory!"
"Ah maybe it's been too long and you don't remember," the youngest said ironically.
"Did you just call me old?" Jin pricked up.
"You said it, not me!" Jungkook laughed at him. "Anyway, we have to choose an even more remote destination, a place where no one really knows us."
"Everyone knows us now!" Jin pointed out, "is there a country left where we are not known?"
"Who is presumptuous now? Not everybody knows us! Listen to this : my great aunt's friend live in Busan and had never heard of BTS before she met me. And even now, I'm not sure she fully understood what it meant for me to be a part of BTS knowing that she passed me on a bad time when I went into her house without taking off my shoes while I was helping carry the furniture for her move."
"What did she do to you?" Jin asked with curiosity.
"She pulled my cheek for dirtying her floor and then she slipped a caramel in my mouth to thank me to have carried his furniture, like I was 8 years old!"
"Wow, she realised Army's dream without even knowing it," Jin jocked.
"I think you missed the moment my cheek was ripped from my face in moment of pure hate," Jungkook replied by massaging the cheek following painful memories. "I don't remember well, but I even think it was me who had to wash the floor after that."
Jin burst out laughing.
"So people and places like that still exists, even here! Then we have to find a place like Busan, where the whole population is the age of your aunt's friend."
"Hey, don't make fun of Busan!" Jungkook pretended to be offended.
"It's for calling me old"
"Aaaah... Fair enough."
"Juste kidding, I will never insult the city where Jeon Jungkook was born! Anyway, I don't know when we'll be allowed to take a break, but then let's find a peaceful place where people can pull our cheeks without knowing how much they costs a fortune."
"Yeah..." Jungkook thoughtfully said.
Yet, he realizing at the same time as Jin that they still had no scheduled date for their next break, which presaged many more long months of exhausting work.
"JK?"
Jin's voice snapped Jungkook out of his thoughts.
"Yeah?"
"Thank you for taking me here and to Hanagae today, it did me a lot of good," Jin thanked Jungkook.
He obviously hadn't been able to forget everything that had happened to him and would probably continue to suffer from it for a long time, but this moment outside of time that he had just experienced was so precious and had as if put a bandage on an open wound.
"I'm glad it made you happy," the younger smiled.
"Sadly all good things come to an end, we should go home now, makeup artists won't like our dark circles tomorrow," Jin joked rubbing his tired eyes.
"I believe that at this time, we can no longer really speak of "tomorrow", rather of "later"", Junkook noticed, while getting up, imitated by Jin.
Suddenly, a strident yelling nearby startled them and made them close together in close formation, like in their processions at the airport, when he had to stay together to face the crowd and protect each other. It had become instinctive for them, like a survival instinct attached to their famous idol position.
A group of four young women had just walked into the convenience store to satisfy a nighttime craving and were staring at them in amazement, as if they couldn't believe their eyes. Their cry alerted the employee who seemed to wake up from his torpor.
"What's the matter?" he asked in an irritated tone to the girls, two of whom seemed to be foreign students. The man couldn't stand the cultural difference that he often took for disrespect. "Do you think it's an hour to shout like this?"
"But... but it's-it's it's..." one of the girls stammered, pointing to the two petrified boys with a finger shaking with excitement, before screaming hysterically : IT'S JUNGKOOK AND JIN FROM BTS, OH MY GOD, DON'T YOU RECOGNIZE THEM?!"
Her friends brandished their phones and pointed them at them to take the most possible pictures, as the clerk stared at them curiously. Jin suddenly collected himself and stood up, hurriedly grabbing Jungkook's arm and whispered to him:
"Let's go now, Jungkook."
Jungkook nodded and they quickly put their masks back on, cleared their table as the girls continued to film them. Finally, they bowed before the employee and the four girls who, one hand over their mouth, couldn't get over it and kept talking, muffling cries. But as they passed them, one of the girls shouted:
"Jungkook, Jin is this a date?!"
The other girls giggled as they continued to film. Jungkook stopped and turned to them, refraining from giving them an annoyed look.
"Can you stop this, please?" Jungkook asked politely instead.
"S-Sorry," the girl who had speak apologized, suddenly embarrassed to stand in front of an upset Jungkook, especially since next to him and Jin, she felt very small.
"Don't stop, let's get out of here," Jin said to Jungkook, still whispering, continuing to pull him.
Jungkook obediently let himself be pulled by Jin. As they walked away from the convenience store, Jin and Jungkook seemed to breathe a little better, letting their nervousness subside.
However, this relief was short-lived when they heard the girls continue to giggle and scream with excitement while walking behind them, attracting other night walkers who soon crowded around them while they were still a few meters from their car. There were no more than ten of them, but it was enough to make the two idols uncomfortable, especially since they were now blocking their way and the camera flashes kept dazzling them.
"Can you let us go, please?" Jin asked politely tightening his grip on Jungkook's arm, anxious to be thus blinded by the continual flashes and putting his other hand in front of his face, "we would like to leave."
But people didn't listen to them and kept shouting excitedly. Jin and Jungkook knew they weren't supposed to walk around in public without bodyguards because it could be dangerous. Not that people generally mean them harm, but they were so excited to see them that they couldn't control themselves in their attitude and unwittingly put them in danger or in a situation of great anxiety if the crowd was too dense or too close.
And that's what was happening. Feeling that people weren't listening to them made them feel like objects and they desperately wanted to run away from a crowd that made them feel so helpless. Jungkook decided it was time for them to force their way. He broke away from Jin's embrace and grabbed his arm in turn, swapping positions.
Then he pulled him with force and sliced through the small crowd, pushing his way through it toward the car. However, people continued to follow them as they approached the car, some even clutching their clothing and slowing their pace.
When Jungkook felt his cap fall off because of people trying to touch him, he quickely bent down to pick it up, forcing Jin to stop with him but was pushed by the people who clung to him and fell hard to the ground, dragging Jin down a bit.
Holding Jin by the arm was both a blessing and a curse. Indeed, as he was holding him with one hand and holding his cap with the other, he didn't have time to put a hand forward to cushion his fall and fell directly on his face. But it was only because he held onto Jin tightly that he didn't break his nose or teeth, and only scraped the bridge of his nose which instantly began to bleed.
"Jungkook!!" Jin shouted, kneeling down and taking his face in his hands to assess the damage. "Are you okay? You're bleading a bit."
"I'm fine," the younger reassured him, feeling his nose to check despite everything that it was not broken. Pulling his hand away and seeing blood on his palm, he sighed in exasperation, hoping his face isn't too scarred.
This time it was too much. Jungkook let Jin help him up and turned to to the people who continued to film and photograph him despite shocked faces and cries of concern following his fall.
"Stop following us!" he shouted angrily, even though he didn't usually get angry with his fans.
"We are sorry Jungkook!" some people shouted.
"Can you...can you sign an autograph for us?" a young woman asked hopefully, then other people asked the same sing, some even asking to take selfie with them.
Jungkook couldn't get over hearing that. They had just shoved them and knocked him down, how could they have the nerve to ask them that now?!
"Why shoud we do that?" Jungkook asked angrily crossing his arms and making them even more uncomfortable and making Jin's eyes widen of surprise because Jungkook had never spoken so harshly to his fans, on the contrary, he was always the most benevolent with them.
"Forget it, JK, they were just excited to see us," Jin whispered, trying to pull him by the arm continuing to smile so as not to worry the people, "we really should go, now."
He was worried about Jungkook's behavior and also about their lateness. But Jungkook had decided to conclude before leaving:
"We won't sign you any autograph nor taking any photo with you tonight, I want you to realize that you messed up the ending of one of our rare outings and you don't deserve a treat today. We too have the right to go out in peace, especially if we take the trouble to go out in the middle of the night. Do you understand?"
The people, intimidated, muttered a small "yes" accompanied by some words of apology.
"Thanks," Jungkook thanked them curtly.
"And please don't follow us now," Jin added.
"Okay, we won't" some girls promised.
The two boys greeted them one last time, bowing and wishing them good night, then hurried to return to their car.
"Why don't we have the right to be in peace ?" Jungkook complained while starting the car quickly to go back to the dormitory. "I'm sorry hyung, I wanted to end the day on something positive."
"Why do you apologize ? It's not me who walks in with a red and scratchy nose," Jin pointed out.
"Hey, don't make fun of me," Jungkook whined, stroking his nose gently with his fingertips while his other hand still held the steering wheel. "I hope it doesn't leave a scar."
"No, it should be fine, it looks light," Jin reassured him as the maknae scanned his nose in the car's interior rearview mirror.
"I really wanted us to have a good time before going home, but they ruined everything," Jungkook grumbled looking away from his nose and concentrating on the road.
"You know, I really had a good time, even though my heart almost jumped out of my chest when the girls screamed," Jin added placing a hand on his chest.
"Yes I saw you freaked out," Jungkook scoffed.
"Don't play smart, you were scared too," Jin retorted.
"No, I wasn't," Jungkook denied.
"Yaaa! How can you lie like that ? You even hid behind my shoulders!"
"Yeah, and I already told you that behind your broad shoulders, I was not afraid of anything, I didn't lie," Jungkook laughed.
"Okay, great move," Jin conceded, laughing back.
They concentrated on the road for a few moments, as the car drove up the familiar hill of Hanam. Then, Jungkook broke the silence:
"Why must the fans outside be waiting for us from everywhere at any moment and even inside of our home now, must we be stuck with someone who wants to hurt us?"
"Are you talking about Yoongi?" Jin tried to joked, not wanting to think about Lee at that moment.
"What ? No, I'm not talking about... oh crap," he cut himself after looking at the time and thinking about Yoongi's threats. "Yes, he will definitely want to hurt us."
