Chapter 24 : Theories
Back in the kitchen, Lee and Han of the situation to take whatever action they deem necessary, Namjoon and Yoongi discover all the dishes that Jin cooks before they wake up. There were dozens of them, all stored in the freezer or fridge, the rest on the table. Against all expectations, the whole kitchen had been cleaned from top to bottom.
"He was really not well this morning..." Namjoon pointed out.
"You think?" Yoongi quipped, bitter.
"Stop your taunting, now is not really the time," the leader got exasperated.
He sat down heavily in a chair and let his gaze run along the table, analyzing the dishes Jin made. There was way too much for one breakfast, it was obvious. The older boy had cooked without being able to stop, compulsively, as if his subconscious was pushing him to do so in order to turn away from some dark thought.
"I'm sorry," Yoongi sighed, falling into a chair next to him, "I'm not used to seeing him like that and it really scares me."
"I know, I feel the same," Namjoon said.
"No, you didn't see what I saw, you weren't there," Yoongi gravely contradicted him, his voice shaking as he recalls the events that just happened.
"Hyung..."
In two days, Namjoon was able to experience a change in the attitude of three of his members. Jungkook had developed tantrums, Jin had developed anxiety attacks and now Yoongi was also getting visibly scared when he had always been the quiet force of BTS. Something was wrong with his band right now, that was for sure. The leader almost expected to see Hoseok arrive in tears to complete this dark picture.
"I thought he was going to die, you know?" Yoongi explained in his shaky voice which threatened to break at any moment, to justify himself. "I had to make him believe that everything was going to be fine because I didn't know what to do but he wasn't breathing, it looked like he didn't want to breathe anymore. and then he was so freaked out when he realized he wasn't breathing and was going to die that he scared me even more. I really thought it was the end because even if he wanted to this time, he couldn't do it anymore. And at that moment I realized that there was nothing I could do. Nothing at all..."
He took his head in his hands and nervously ran his hands through his hair, still having clearly in mind what had just happened and replaying a thousand scenarios in which he would have been more effective in his way of reacting.
"Hyung, you reacted right, you managed to calm him down so don't worry anymore. If I had been there in your place, I would have freaked out and who knows what would have happened."
"H-he was going to die in my arms Namjoon, and if he did, I-I would never get over it."
At these words, he, who usually never cried let two single tears escape from his eyes still fixed on Namjoon who stood for a moment frozen at the sight. Yoongi, ashamed of having had a moment of weakness and giving in to fear, wiped away his tears with a quick swipe of his sleeve but as Namjoon stood up to hug and comfort him, he let a few others slip from his eyes, which quickly reddened.
"Hey, it's going to be fine! Jin hyung is getting better, he is out of danger. You saved his life today."
Namjoon stayed like that for a few moments before sitting down, while keeping a reassuring hand on Yoongi's.
"The most important thing now is to understand what could have put him in this state so that it doesn't happen again. And I can't believe it was Jungkook," Yoongi finally said wiping his wet cheeks.
"Jungkook kept being tough on him about leaving for military service and his anger even carried over to the whole band. It probably stressed Jin out especially if he felt responsible for this situation," Namjoon ventured. "I'm not saying he knowingly did anything that could hurt hyung, but that's what could've happened."
Yoongi shook his head, unconvinced.
"Honestly, Jin has seen other things, he's faced a lot of hate in the past but he's never had a panic attack. I don't know if your hypothesis is credible if we stop at Jungkook's tantrum. He's still a kid even in Jin's eyes and what Jungkook did was like a childish crisis. Admittedly, Jin hyung loves Jungkook very much and would not have wanted to be responsible for his sadness, but does that justify a person like Jin succumbing to such panic?"
"But think about it hyung: what if we downplayed Jungkook's determination? When he is really determined to achieve something, he fights to the end so why would it be any different with Jin hyung? Perhaps last night, their discussion went wrong, didn't you notice his facial injuries? He didn't have them last night but he had them this morning."
"You don't think Jungkook could have raised his hand on hyung, do you?" Yoongi asked, flabbergasted.
"I don't know, I just wish I could ask them what happened but I have a feeling it's not going to be easy," Namjoon predicted. "But other things intrigue me such as Jungkook's clothes that Jin is wearing..."
"Oh Lord..." Yoongi whispered, suddenly remembering the discussion he had had the night before with Jungkook.
"What?" Namjoon asked, intrigued by the sudden realization on Yoongi's face.
"If what you are assuming is true then it may be my fault..."
"Eh? Why would it be your fault?"
Looking away, the elder tried to remember precisely what he had talked about with Jungkook. Finally, he said:
"Jungkook desperately wanted to know how to keep Jin hyung by his side and ended up telling me about the bond between a couple, believing that something was missing in his relationship with Jin and that's what he needed to convince him to stay with him. I was the one who talked about making love, Jungkook wouldn't have thought about it, it's all my fault... "
"M-making love?" Namjoon repeated, stunned.
"Y-Yeah," Yoongi stammered, confused.
"Why would you say that?!"
"I-I didn't think he would take it so seriously or nerver in my wildest thoughts I would have thought that he would take it for himself!" Yoongi defended himself nervously, "on the contrary, I wanted him to let go and leave Jin hyung alone!"
"Okay, okay, calm down," Namjoon ordered softly, who didn't want another panic attack this morning in the dorm and saw that Yoongi was still too shaken to think properly. He also didn't want to imagine that his doubts were true, even though what Yoongi was saying went in that direction. "Nothing says that this is what really happened last night and whatever happened, you are not responsible, okay? Let's wait until we can have a discussion with them."
Yoongi nodded in agreement, but did not take his dark thoughts out of his troubled mind.
"In the meantime, let's not spoil the food hyung made, we'll thank him later," Namjoon decided before setting the table for breakfast.
When they woke up, Hoseok, Taehyung and Jimin were surprised to find a feast waiting for them but also not to see Jin around the table with Yoongi and Namjoon. They told them the story of the morning's events without giving them their hypotheses on the origin of this dramatic event, but prevented them from rushing into Jin's room where Jungkook was also.
"Let's give them time," Namjoon told them, "they need it, they're really shaken up. And anyway, Jin hyung must still be sleeping, we have to let him rest."
"But Jungkook is awake, he must be hungry," Taehyung protested, "can we at least get him some food?"
"I'll do it, although I doubt he wants to eat anything seen how stressed he is."
Taehyung, did not insist, trusting his leader's judgment. He sat down at the table with the others and mentally thanked Jin for the meal, then ate, his mind troubled. He wondered if Jungkook knew what had caused Jin to have this anxiety attack, remembering vividly the maknae's reaction when he offered to invite Jin to play with them. He had shied away, unwilling to give any further explanation for their private discussion that was supposed to have reconciled them.
Jin was not an anxious person, everyone knew that and seeing him succumb to his anxieties was a possibility he imagined himself to be close to nothing before today. The only time he had seen his genuinely anxious in front of them was when he and Jin had seriously argued. Taehyung still remembered it with pain because it was his fault that the argument had grown so intense that it could have been aborted very quickly.
At that time, he reproached him for not being fast enough in the choreography and kept insisting on pushing him beyond his limits even as Jin tried to explain to him that he could not, that he was already doing his best. He was so angry with him then, thinking he was messing up the dance, that he had been numb to his pain even though he knew that Jin was committed to doing good for his members.
All this to finally realize that it was all his fault and that he was the one who had positioned himself too far from the group on the stage and that it was his fault that Jin had arrived at him with the wrong timing.
This event nevertheless had the merit to led them to a discussion in which Jin confessed that behind his smile and good humor, he also, sometimes, got depressed and it had profoundly changed the vision that Taehyung had of him.
This argument had made their friendship stronger than before, which he was deeply convinced of, and Taehyung had vowed to never be responsible for his hyung's sadness and stress again. Nothing stressed Jin more than the fear he had of disappointing his members, Taehyung knew it now and always took the time to reassure him when Jin seemed depressed, especially in the face of the choreography.
But Jungkook, who had always lived under Jin's protective wing, unconditionally receiving his affection, had not acquired the same automatisms that the other members had in dealing with the elder. Although he was still very complimentary and protective of Jin, he did not hold back when he had reproaches to address to him. He was not used to receiving a refusal from him and seeing Jin refuse his insistent request to stay, he got mad at him, without thinking about his own feelings.
It was obvious that Jin would be sad to leave them and his decision didn't make him a selfish person, but Jungkook had mostly thought about the pain he would experience if Jin left and he wanted to save himself from that pain. In doing so, hadn't he put immense stress on Jin's shoulders? Of all the members, Jungkook was the closest to Jin, so he was the one who could hurt him the most, consciously or not.
Taehyung wasn't sure about this panic attack, but he was going to have a discussion with Jungkook to make sure it didn't happen again before Jin left. Jin had to keep good memories and for that, his last moments with them had to be marked by happiness and not by stress. Otherwise, what would make him want to come back to them after his two years of military service?
"I have to tell you something," Namjoon said suddenly, catching everyone's attention. "It turns out that ultimately Jin doesn't leaves us anymore: Lee hyung told me last night that he decided that he was going to stay. "
And suddenly, Taehyung's certainties shattered, along with Namjoon's.
If Jin has decided to stay, in the end, why is he so stressed out? Taehyung wondered, confused.
Lee was with Jin last night too, Namjoon suddenly remembered, horrified with new theories in his mind, realizing that he may have unknowingly let a punishment session unfold under his nose. But again he wondered, why would Jin have been punished? What could he have done to get hit to the point of developing such anguish?
Nevertheless, the answers to all the questions they had were on the other side of the closed door to Jin's bedroom, next to BTS's youngest and oldest members.
