Chapter 20 : Behind the closed door (part 2)

Jungkook saw light in the living room and walked over. Namjoon, seated on the sofa, was holding his songwriter in his hand and seemed to be thinking intensely, his pencil half-raised above the page. He looked up at the maknae when he felt his presence, a smile on his lips. He seemed relieved.

"I can't work in my room with all the racket Jimin and Taehyung are making there," he explained without Jungkook asking for anything. "And I heard you scream too, I'm glad to see that you are better and that you have reconciled with Taehyung."

     "Thanks, hyung."

"But! your competitive spirit makes you forget everything and everyone around you and you have to remember that it is late, and some people want to rest."

     "Sorry, hyung."

"It's okay. But what I do not understand, however, is why you feel the urge to bang walls, it's not okay to make so much noise at night."

Jungkook flinched in horror at hearing Namjoon's words, fully realizing that he, Taehyung and Jimin weren't responsible for these noises the rapper heard. It was more likely the sound of a bed hitting hard against the wall that he had heard through the screams of the three younger singers.

He was relieved Namjoon hadn't stood up to reprimand them because on his way to Taehyung's room he would have walked past his and understood that something was going on there. And by listening, he would have understood that he absolutely had to open the door...

"Everything went well with Lee hyung? "Inquired the leader, interrupting his train of thought,"

"Wh-Why do you ask ?" Jungkook stammered anxiously.

"Well, he showed up earlier saying he wanted to talk to you one on one. Since he was a little pissed off, I didn't dare stop him, I'm sorry. I know how brutal he can be when he's angry, but since your relationship seemed to have improved a lot lately, I figured it would be okay. Is that the case?"

"Y-Yeah, it is," the younger answered.

"Are you sure?" Namjoon asked with a frown, "You look a little tense."

"It's okay don't worry," replied Jungkook, who could see that his leader was reassured to see it in one piece and couldn't seem to make out a trace of the slap the younger had received over early in the evening. "He wanted to discuss about my appointment earlier with Han at the company and I was a little worried about his reaction."

"What did you talk about?" Namjoon asked, curious, even though he suspected the answer a little.

"About Jin's departure of course. I... I begged them to hold him back."

"Of course you did that, I should have known," the leader sighed. "And how was it ?"

"Lee hyung wasn't too happy that I pushed them so hard, that's why he was very upset."

Guilt washed over him again as he spoke out loudly of the memory he had already so often remembered tonight: it was all his fault and yet, it was not he who was bearing the consequences of his thoughtless actions. What would Namjoon have thought of that if he had told her everything at that moment, he who adored Jin?

For sure, he would have rushed into the room to save Jin and then, never would have forgiven him, Jungkook thought with a shiver. Receiving the anger and contempt from the person he respected so much was an unbearable thought for him. Selfishly unbearable.

"And?" Namjoon insisted, "Was it successful? If so, Jin-hyung probably won't like it, you can imagine Jungkook. Even if it saddens you, he really wants to leave, you know?"

"I-I know hyung, I finally understood that things couldn't go the way I imagined them. But still, manager-hyung is talking to Jin hyung now," Jungkook lied. "He may be able to convince him."

"Lee hyung? Convince him? Impossible, unless it is planned this discussion around a round of video games as it is the only thing that brings them together," Namjoon supposed. "Han hyung is better at words than he is, he's the one who should have argued with Jin hyung if they really wanted to convince him."

Seeing his elder talking calmly in this situation, when everyone knew how explosive the manager was, Jungkook wondered.

"Hyung, aren't you worried that Jin hyung was on his own with Lee hyung?" Jungkook asked, intrigued.

"Why? Does our manager have any complaints about Jin hyung that I didn't know of? Jin has made sure he's been blameless over the past few weeks and the managers acknowledged that his attitude had become what they expected. So what could they blame him for today? It's not like he chooses to be summoned by the military."

     "Y-yeah, that's right."

Namjoon was right, Jungkook thought. And at the same time, how far from the truth! He had no idea what Jin was going through right now. No one knew that except him. Namjoon worried to see so many worries on the maknae's face, but he thought it was the fear of seeing Jin leaving the group that still tormented him.

"Jungkook his departure won't change your friendship, don't worry. You will remain the great duo that you are now, nothing and no one will take that away from you."

He patted him gently on the shoulder to accompany his comforting words and Jungkook gave him a faint smile of gratitude, touched but far from reassured because of what only he knew.

Behind him then rose the voice of the human he hated the most and who made him turn abruptly:

"I'm done here for tonight boys, it was a good talk, I'm going to go now."

Lee's forehead was glistening with sweat and looked so satisfied that Jungkook felt an overwhelming urge to hit him, but instead he refrained and jumped off the couch and rushed towards his room.

As he walked past the manager, the latter grabbed his arm and squeezed him so tight that Jungkook was sure he would have been able to snap it off him if he wanted to. The man leaned into his ear and whispered, threateningly:

"Remember: what happens in the bedroom stays in the bedroom."

Jungkook flinched at the threat. When Lee released him, he didn't take the time to look him in the eye and rushed to his room to return to Jin.

"Everything is fine?" Namjoon asked, worried to see Jungkook running after the manager's action.

"Everything is fine, Jungkook made a few mistakes today but I fixed it. It looks like Jin has decided to stay after all, and Jungkook is delighted." He laughed and left the dorm, under the bewildered gaze of Namjoon who seemed to be dumbfounded at the news.

The leader decided to let Jungkook and Jin have a chat tonight and put off the conversation he wanted to have with them until the next day. He resumed his songwriter and plunged back into the deluge of new poems that swirled in his mind, happy to hear that Jin was going to stay with them.
