Chapter 19 : Behind the closed door (part 1)
Seized with anguish in front of this closed door which could only let him imagine what Lee was going to do to Jin, began to pace, frantically running a hand through his hair and constantly pulling it back, breathing more and more faster.
Jungkook did not know what to do. How could he leave and ignore what was going on behind that closed door? How could he get the terror of his hyung out of his mind? He stopped and remained motionless in front of this closed door, which he stared at intensely as if she was responsible for his distress.
He desperately wanted to protect him but found himself helpless, motionless in front of that damn door. Should he push it down and get Jin out of there or go warn all the other members to form a united front against this monster? Of course he had to!
But then why couldn't he make this decision? Why was Lee's threat making him so indecisive?! Jin himself had agreed to give in to Lee's threat to protect him so he convinced himself that he shouldn't do that.
"I'm so sorry, hyung, it should be me behind that door, not you," he whispered, "and in my place, you would have known what to do, but I don't... I really don't know hyung..."
Jungkook was afraid of what he might hear and imagine if he stayed there. No doubt he would want to break down the door to rescue Jin, but then other problems would follow and lead them to further ordeals with consequences as yet unimaginable. In addition, he risked attracting the attention of others with his suspicious behavior. So he resolved to walk away, silencing his deep will, after casting a last glance at the door of his room.
He walked past Yoongi's room, who was already asleep and made sure to close his door. Then he verified that Hoseok was still listening to music with headphones on as he surfed social media and answered messages from fans, oblivious to the outside world. From Taehyung's room rose cries that would no doubt help to drown out the noises that would escape from Jungkook's: Taehyung and Jimin were in the middle of video games, continuing a competition that had started several days before, and were particularly loud.
Jungkook mused that this was where he could get distracted from the reality that unfolded beyond. When he entered the room, the two older ones greeted him without looking away from their screen, busy as they were trying to win their game.
"Did you come to apologize for your behavior earlier?" Taehyung asked without looking at him.
Jungkook's thoughts were so busy with what just happened with Jin that it took him a few seconds to figure out what Taehyung was talking about.
"Oh o-of course, I'm so sorry for my behavior this morning, I should never have raged at you. Please, forgive me."
"So you've calmed down now?" Taehyung insisted.
"Yes, I think so," Jungkook lied.
In fact, his feeling of anger had turned instantly into a feeling of fear and anguish after what had just happened with Lee.
Jimin was always sensitive when it came to the maknae and immediately he told him:
"It's okay Jungkook, we've already forgiven you, we know you were in shock at what you just learned."
"Who said I forgave him already?" Taehyung protested. "Can't I blame him for at least a day?"
"Tae..." Jimin began reproachfully.
"I'm just kidding, relax!" Taehyung cut in laughing and handing his controller to Jungkook. "Jungkook, you can play with us as a sign of peace."
"Thanks hyung," Jungkook said, smiling faintly.
They invited him to play with them without paying enough attention to the youngest's worried look and for a long time the latter forgot what had brought him here, and even had fun.
Their excited screams eventually woke Yoongi who walked into the bedroom screaming half-understandable words about murder if they still kept him awake. In his waking state, Yoongi did not realize that noises, sometimes accompanied by muffled voices, continued to occur from further away in the dorm. However, for the others and especially for Jungkook, it was clear that the trio weren't solely responsible for Yoongi's premature awakening.
"But who is..." Jimin began, straining his ears to try to discover the identity of the one screaming past the menacing body of Yoongi towering over them from the doorway.
"We'll make less noise, hyung!" Jungkook hurriedly promised, realizing that he had to act immediately to protect the dark secret of his locked room.
"Yeah," Taehyung said, eager to take the menacing aura of the second older away from him, "you can go back to sleep hyung."
After Yoongi left, the noises coming from Jungkook's room seemed to have ceased, much to his relief. The three younger ones had resumed their games but Jungkook was no longer so driven by the game, his mind once again floating by the closed door of his room.
After several games, Taehyung ends up asking:
"Jungkook, why don't you ask Jin to come and play? It would be nice to have as much fun as possible with him before he leaves for military service."
Jungkook remained silent, hearing Jin's name suddenly in the older's mouth immediately painted the worry on his face. Jimin noticed this and gave Taehyung a little nudge.
"Idiot, did you forget they weren't talking to each other anymore?"
"I thought you guys made up, I saw Jin hyung walk into your room earlier. Isn't that why you calmed down? Hyung loves this game so if you are reconciled, we could have a four-way competition!"
Jungkook shook his head, desperately looking for an excuse.
"Jin-hyung is... not really in the mood tonight. He can't play with us."
He wanted to shout the truth to them, inform them of what was going on and rush with them to his room to save Jin. He couldn't even tell them that eventually, Jin wasn't leaving them for his military service and that they would still have plenty of time to play together in the future.
But if he did that, he would also be revealing what he had done to Jin and the threats hanging over not just the two of them but the whole group, considering the fact that each member's reputation directly impacts that of the group. Jungkook was so ashamed, he knew even Jimin's kindness would disappear if he found out about this. He couldn't bring himself to admit everything.
"So you two made up?" Jimin asked hopefully.
"We talked a bit, but I don't want to talk about it now. I wanted to forget a bit, that's why I came to play," Jungkook said.
In this, he was not lying. But he didn't feel able to play tonight anymore. He just watched his friends play and, fed up with the inappropriate joyful atmosphere, ended up saying goodbye to Taehyung and Jimin for the night.
"Don't you want to sleep with me tonight?" Jimin offered as the maknae was about to leave the room.
"Aren't you tired of sleeping with the old guys in the band?" Taehyung scoffed, "that must be boring."
"But it's restful," Jungkook replied before stepping outside.
The other two laughed and returned to their games, seeming ready to continue their entertainment until the end of the night.
