Chapter 138 : The trial of the century - act II

The second trial that took place was that of the sasaeng of the Stade de France and Incheon. In reality, the trial of the Stade de France disaster was going to be conducted in France and before being arrested in Incheon, the young girl behind the tragedy was the subject of both an international arrest warrant and a national arrest warrant by the Korean police.

Since she had been arrested in South Korea and was of South Korean nationality and that in France, the giant lawsuit would take several years to begin given the administrative slowness of the ongoing investigation, the girl named Kim Doo-Na, would first be tried in South Korea. It was a heavy burden on such a young girl's shoulders to face these two lawsuits, but she would have to face the terrible consequences of her actions.

In Korea, she would serve a first sentence decided by the Korean courts before being tried later in France for her responsibility in the disaster, alongside other troublemakers and officials of the disastrous security in the organization of this event, which also involved the company Big Hit. But that day in Seoul was just Doo-Na's trial.

After a few days of respite, BTS found themselves in court again and the girl was brought there too, having been transferred from a juvenile detention center following her arrest at Incheon for assault and attempted murder. She was only sixteen as their lawyers had brought them but being over fourteen, she could be judged as an adult.

In any case, that was what the South Korean justice had decided, which refused to allow her to be heard by a judge for children in a children's court, as her minor age should have required, given the seriousness of the crimes with which she was charged. However, as the trial would be publicized, her face would not be filmed to respect the child rights.

Nevertheless, seeing her enter, Jin was suddenly shocked at how young and terrified she looked to be there. She had obviously cried on the way because her eyes were red and she kept blowing her nose. She was nothing like the six young men they had faced in the first trial, she didn't have their arrogant and aggressive appearance, she was a just... a young girl. How were they going to successfully sue such a person?

"Jungkook, are you sure it's her?" Jin whispered uncertainly to the maknae as they settled into their places with the other members, on the plaintiffs' bench, alongside their lawyers.

The courtroom looked familiar to them after spending so much time there for the Incheon haters' trial and that wooden bench they were sitting on didn't seem as hard to them as the first time. In fact, they had entered it with less apprehension than for the first case.

In response to Jin's question, Jungkook looked up and carefully looked at the girl who was standing next to her attorney in the dock. Her black hair had been cut and her bob cut made her look even younger than before. In addition, her decomposed face was resolutely turned towards the ground as if she didn't dare look at the courtroom let alone the members of BTS who were the ones who filed the lawsuit against her. All her appearance and posture gave the impression of a candid shyness.

Nevertheless, the maknae recognized her very well, he could not have forgotten her eyes after their meeting, when she had stabbed him after unleashing his mad fury on Jin. The main difference was that she didn't wear the expression of furious madness that she had at the Stade de France anymore. He had not seen her clearly in Incheon but in the videos of the attack, she had a face expressing extreme coldness towards Jin.

"Yeah, it's her, there's no doubt about it," he  affirmed in the same whispered tone as Jin. "Hyung, don't let yourself be softened, I'm sure it's part of her lawyer's strategy to protect her."

"You think? Yet, she doesn't seem to pretend her fear and there is a reality: she's young," Jin said, not taking his eyes off her, feeling sorry that she ended up in this situation.

"They will try to move the court, that's for sure," Jungkook affirmed, "I know what you're thinking, but her age doesn't erase what she's done : you must not forget everything she did to you. Besides, we are not here today just for her or just for us. We are here to put all sasaengs on trial and prevent their misdeeds to protect all other idols."

     "I know," Jin sighed.

He knew it well after all the discussions they had had in preparation for their trial. It was a fight for him, for them, but also a broader fight, for others than them and it would shake Korean society.  Still, he was uncomfortable with the idea of suing such a young girl, making her the symbol of sasaeng toxicity, and being responsible of wasting her life. How could a child have been so monstrous and tried to kill him?

Despite the thinking he had had with his bandmates and their lawyers, he did not understand the mechanisms of the birth of such a monster. How, from the ingenuous love for an idol could be born such a hatred pushing to commit a murder or push artists to suicide? It was because he had so much trouble explaining it to himself that he had a hard time realizing that it was really his attacker that he had a few meters from him.

At least that's the thought he had as long as she looked down.

Because as soon as she finally lifted her black stained eyes to him, a feeling of pent-up fear welled up in him and he immediately looked away, his face contorted. He reached over his shoulder and felt the sweater over his shoulder blade, where the scar from the stab she had given him had been.

"Hyung, what is it?" Jungkook asked him with a worried tone, catching the attention of Yoongi who was standing next to him.

"I-I don't know," Jin breathed, keeping his hand pressed to his shoulder blade, " it hurts all of a sudden, like I felt a blade dig into my skin. But there's no blood," he added, pulling his hand away and watching it.

"Of course there's no blood, your wound hasn't reopened after several months," Yoongi remarked attracting the attention of the other two, "maybe your body remembers that she's the one who attacked you."

Grimacing in pain, Jin turned back to the girl but she had looked down.

"So, it's really her..." he muttered as next to him, Jungkook gently rubbed his shoulder to dissipate the pain.

"Yeah," Jungkook nodded fiercely, refusing to let her off the hook after all she had done and especially now that he saw how traumatized Jin still was to the depths of his flesh. He himself suddenly felt his scar on his back tingling. So he renewed the promise he had made to himself: "She will pay for what she did, and it will show others people like her that they can't come after us with impunity."

Everyone stood up to greet Judge Choi, who was presiding over the hearing that time. She presented the plaintiffs and the accused as well as the charges, then the hearing began. BTS' lawyers, Ms. Kim Yun and Mr. Kim Ja, took it upon themselves to report the facts for which the young Doo-Na was today accused by their client.

"Your honor, ladies and gentlemen of the jurors," Yun began, "last October, when the members of BTS were actively preparing for their upcoming world tour, one of their live performances on the V-live platform was inundated with threats from a person who promised to ruin their tour."

While she was talking, Ja projected the screenshot on the dedicated screen in the room and everyone could read the message of a person whose username did not allow Doo-Na to be recognized.

"월드 투어 중에 끔찍한 일이 일어날 것입니다!"

"Something terrible will happen to you during the world tour!"

"The message was resent exactly 53 times, therefore being a real cyberbullying towards the group," Master Yun explained, "then the same person started sending death threats which were relayed massively by other people who took advantage of this opportunity. Those death threats were mostly directed against the eldest of the group Kim Seokjin and some of them may offend the sensitivity of some people watching us."

Maître Ja projected more screenshots this time showing the gruesome death threats and muffled exclamations of horror were heard inside the courtroom.

Jungkook squeezed Jin's hand to send him a wave of comfort and Jin clung to it. He remembered how he felt himseld  reading those death threats alone at night, when Jungkook was sleeping next to him. He had felt so hated... He also remembered the shock Jungkook felt upon reading them the next day and how suddenly, he had had at heart to prevent the company from continuing the world tour just like Namjoon and the others.

"Investigators were recently able to trace the IP address of this person who made the first threats and confirmed that the person in question was Miss Doon-Na here."

The girl kept her head down as the lawyer of BTS pointed at her, feeling that everyone was looking at her with contempt, knowing that this was only the beginning of the accusation. For the moment, there was no questioning and it was only the lawyers who spoke but in the coming days, the complainants, witnesses, specialists and the girl accused would all be questioned and cross-examined by the lawyers of both parts.

When her colleague had transmitted the report of the cyber investigators to the judge and the jurors, Kim Yun continued:

"Given the regular threats received by the group during their career, the company decided to maintain the world tour and as everything went well for them during the American leg of the tour, they started the European tour, having forgotten the threat hanging over them and which could have remained only a threat.

However, on  Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at the end of the concert which took place in Paris at the Stade de France, a heavy object was thrown from the public onto the small stage where Jeon Jungkook and Kim Seokjin were standing. The object hit Mr. Kim in the face and with force, indicating that the assailant was very close to the scene and specifically targeted Mr. Kim.

It was not possible to identify her visually because she was wearing a surgical mask but by having access to the seat numbers and the names associated with each number, we were able to identify that Miss Doo-Na was indeed present at the concert and that she was sitting among the first rows in front of the stage. Here is this official data which was transmitted to us by the Stade France ticket office.

The object that was thrown at Kim Seokjin's head turned out to be an Army Bomb, one of the light sticks associated with BTS fandom. Being quite bulky, they can easily become knockout weapons if used for that purpose while being perfectly authorized to enter the stadium because being a part of the BTS show that almost every fan had with them.  So there was nothing suspicious about Doo-Na having such an item, and that's what probably decided her to use it to hurt Mr. Kim."

The lawyer went to take from the table a plastic bag containing an easily recognizable object for the members of BTS as it was an Army Bomb. It had been entrusted to Korean justice by French investigators. As it was a necessary piece of evidence for both trials, the object would then have to be returned to the French police.

Everyone could see, thanks to the camera zoom that this Army Bomb was stained with blood. Jungkook gulped as he remembered what happened when it was just him and Jin left on the small stage at the end of the pontoon. The glowing red lights of the Army bombs had blinded them and they had not seen the projectile coming straight at them.

He had called out to Jin worriedly but Jin, half stunned by the blow didn't seem to hear him as the blood ran down his face. He had been afraid it was a serious injury given the blood Jin was losing but he hadn't had time to check because of the danger that was coming straight at them.

To the rhythm of the lawyer's public statements which relied on their own testimony and people's muffled exclamations of horror, Jungkook and Jin had to live again what had happened during that terrible night.

Jin who was in pain and thought he had lost the use of his eye.

Jungkook who saw the fight between the fans close to the scene to try to take revenge for them on the assailant without managing to catch the right person.

The gigantic crowd movement the panic had created.

The people who had stepped on themselves to survive.

Jungkook's frantic race to save them before it's too late.

The pontoon that had been submerged.

Jin who had fallen on one side and Jungkook on the other.

Jungkook who had almost been trampled and suffocated but Namjoon who had saved him and made him go up on the pontoon to go get Jin without really knowing what danger he was going to have to face.

Jin who had also been almost trampled then his escape by crawling on the ground to escape the girl who pursued him by walking slowly with her knife and talking to him in a frightening way.

All these phrases echoed in his head like a resurgence of his suppressed terror :

"You are there Jin Oppa, I was looking for you."

"Stay there Jin Oppa, I'm coming for you."

"I'm going to kill you for what you did."

     "Op-pa, op-pa, op-pa!"

"I'll kill you Oppa, don't need to run away!"

And then, her screams of pure hate before stabbing him:

"YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WHAT YOUR PLACE WAS OR LEAVE WHEN YOU WHERE TOLD BUT YOU STAYED, SO DIE NOW!"

In the courtroom, Jin gave a small jolt as he felt the blade dig painfully into his flesh again and he closed his eyes in hopes of chasing that imagined pain away. But he still heard the terrifying voice in his head, hearing clearly her murderous coldness in Incheon:

"It's time for you to disappear, forever this time!"

"No..." he moaned weakly, suddenly placing both hands over his ears in hopes of stopping this reasoning in his head."I don't want to disappear anymore..."

"Jin hyung?" Jungkook called him with worry.

"It hurts too much, JK..." Jin moaned in a low voice, head in his hands and eyes closed.

Seeing him in distress, Jungkook pulled him to him in a reassuring embrace. Because of what Lee had done to him, Jin had for a long time suppressed what the girl had given him. When he had nightmares that woke him up in the middle of the night, it was always because of Lee.  Yet, now with that trial and his reunion with Doo-Na, all of his repressed memories and feeling of fear and pain of Doo-Na's assault was coming back.

"I'm here with you, it's gonna be okay hyung," Jungkook assured him and with a nod, assured Namjoon who was watching them with concern on the other side of Jin that he was taking care of him.

Jungkook had already made this promise in the past without being able to honor it but this time, he was sure he could keep it.

Jin nodded, his head still buried in his hands. He knew he was safe here, his parents were a few meters away from him, his dongasengs too and the whole world was watching them.  He didn't have to be scared of a teenage girl who seemed scared of events herself. However, he couldn't control his anxiety, it had risen inside him and didn't want to leave him. He felt stupid, why was he terrified by her voice?

Because she stabbed me, a voice in his head reminded him, as he still held it in his hands. She tried to kill me and she asked me to die.

"Namjoon hyung, can I take him outside for a few minutes?" Jungkook whispered to his leader, seeing that people were staring at them and one of the cameras was trained on them so as not to lose any of the reaction that this reminder of the facts caused to Jin.

"No," Jin whispered back before Namjoon could answer, raising his head. He knew he had to stay. He couldn't crack from the start. He said he would beat Lee, but how could he do it if he broke down in front of a child the first day of the trial? He declared: "I'm staying."

"Are you sure, hyung? This is only the first plea, you don't have to be there absolutely if the rest of us all stay to represent BTS," his leader assured him.

"Yes, I am sure Namjoon. I mustn't be afraid of her, I must face her from beginning to end," Jin affirmed.

Namjoon and Jungkook exchanged a look before nodding in the face of Jin's decision.

The rest of Maître Yun's deposition explained how Jungkook threw himself under Doo-Na's knife and how the distraught girl fled in the face of Jungkook's anger. They were then both in great danger of death after that. Photos of their stab wounds after treatment were shown and both boys' medical reports were read to prove their severity.

The rest of her story took place in Incheon when she had stumbled among other fans and journalists during the fire alarm. This time, Jin was no longer with Jungkook when it happened but with Taehyung and their manager Han.

Jin was terrified to see her and she had threw herself on his wheelchair to knock him down before she tried to kill him again but Taehyung had stopped her. As she clung to him and prevented him from joining Jin right away when he and the knife that she had brought had disappeared, his life had was once again been threatened. It means that it was partly her responsibility if Jin and Taehyung had been beaten up and that Yoongi was almost stabbed.

Then she had been caught by Han and then entrusted to airport security before being first entrusted to a juvenile court  which placed her in pre-trial detention.

Her story and her wrongs could have ended there but it didn't.

"Finally, among the birthday letters written to the address of Mr. Kim Seokjin and which he had not been able to read before his return to South Korea was a particular letter whose fingerprints made it possible to define that it had been written by Miss Doo-Na."

Kim Yun brandishes the letter in question and Doo-Na put on a horrified expression, as if she already forgot the existence of this letter. In view of the same expression of her lawyer, it was necessary to believe that she had forgotten to tell her about it.

"Sounds like a touching attention to Kim Seokjin, doesn't it? Well think again, because it's actually a last birthday letter where Doo-Na explained to Seokjin all the reasons why he had to give up his life," Maître Yun explained.

A horrified exclamation ran through the room and this exclamation also reached outside the court where the lawsuit was broadcast for the gathered crowd. This cry turned into a cry of anger when the lawyer read aloud the said letter.

Jin had read it alone in his room. He had refused to read it again during the preparation for the trial because the words were engraved in his memory anyway. Now that he heard it again after Jungkook, at Hanagae, listed all the reasons why he should live, starting with the love that people had for him, he found this letter full of falsehoods. This girl's hatred for him had erased the truth about him, and he, like an idiot, had believed her enough to step into that icy water and let himself die.

And now people were gonna find out.

He bit his lip realizing the terrible revelation that his lawyer was going to make in front of all his fans and for which he was ashamed. He curled up against Jungkook who hold him, as Kim Yun completed her statement of facts:

"Because of this letter and these terrible words written by this young girl that you all heard, Mr. Kim's life has once again been put in danger. Indeed, when he was already in a state of great distress after all the hardships and the suffuring he had gone through, these terrible words particularly affected him and he decided to take them literally."

The lawyer let her statement resonate with the audience, letting them understand what it meant, and when she saw the shocked expressions of the jurors who had just understood, she gave the final stroke of her statement:

"Yes, ladies and gentlemen, last January, because of this terrible hatred that this person had for him and that she has expressed sufficiently often and explicitly through her words and actions, Kim Seokjin tried and almost succeeded in ending his life."
