Chapter 130: Stay alive

He had to kill him. He had to take revenge for Jin and protect him from this man forever. So Jin could relearn how to live without fear.

This crazy thought suddenly brought him back to reality because something had just struck his mind: Jin had just tried to end his life. To end his life

      JIN HYUNG!

Snapped out of his furious madness, Jungkook suddenly turned to Jin who hadn't gotten up and hadn't even moved from where he had fallen. Jungkook immediately understood that he didn't have time to decide what he wanted to do to Lee, he had to take care of Jin, it was his priority.

His hands fell away from Lee's throat and he rushed to Jin. He grabbed him under the armpits, pulling him away from the freezing water until he joined the coat he had abandoned earlier a few feet from the ripples. Laying Jin on the ground, he was about to cover him with his coat to warm him up when he realized that was not the first thing he should do. He first had to check if Jin was completely unconscious and then if he was breathing.

He shook his shoulders sharply and shouted, then said:

"Hyung, it's me Jungkook, do you hear me?! If you can hear me, open your eyes!! Hyung?! HYUNG?!"

Jin didn't answer and his eyes remained resolutely closed. Despite the darkness, Jungkook's eyes were perfectly adaptated and had no trouble making out Jin's face. A face as pale, as cold and as rigid as that of a marble statue.

It was an image that awakened a painful memory that Jungkook could never forget. A memory that had become one of his regular nightmares: Jin's lifeless body usually covered in blood. And then it happened again? No. No, this time he had to be able to do something. He couldn't let Jin die.

After what happened in France, after failing to protect Jin and everyone else, Jungkook didn't take lightly Lee's mean remarks towards him about his inability to give a heart massage. Everyone called him the Golden Maknae, the one who could do everything, but he was unable to know what to do when a person was unconscious, unable to know what to do when a person was not breathing, unable to perform CPR, unable to save someone's life. Unable to save Jin's life.

He had therefore taken introductory courses in first aid during his hiatus and had immediately graduated because he learned quickly. Those in charge of training had been amazed at the urgency of his willingness to learn. They could not understand that Jungkook had witnessed the worst in the greatest helplessness and that it had marked him forever.

Even though he was struck with a wave of anguish at Jin's inert body lying in the snowy sand, he must not panic and must maintain his composure: he had to if he wanted to have a chance of save him.

He put a hand on Jin's forehead and carefully tilted his head back while lifting his chin to keep him from choking on his tongue. Then, Jungkook approached his ear to Jin's mouth to try to perceive a breath, even a slight one, while checking that his chest rose and fell regularly. But he saw nothing and heard nothing. His cheek, inches from Jin's mouth, felt no warm breath, no breath of life.

"I-it'll be fine," Jungkook whispered to keep himself from panicking and stay in control of his movements. "Hyung, this time I'm going to save you, so hold on!"

However, for that, he had to act quickly. Very quickly because Jin had been inert for too long. He lifted Jin's wet sweater and t-shirt up to his chin for direct access to his bare chest and placed his two interlocked hands on top of it, then immediately began his chest compressions while continuing to speak, in rhythm to his pressures, to Jin who couldn't hear him:

"Hyung wake up! wake up! wake up! wake up! wake up!"

Out of breath after repeating this gesture and those words thirty times, he leaned over Jin's face again, put a hand on his forehead, pinched his nose and took a deep breath. Then, he placed his lips on Jin's, as if to place a saving kiss there and he breathed air into his mouth for a very long moment, letting Jin's chest fill and heave. Then he repeated the operation a second time. Jin didn't wake up.

So, Jungkook, who had only practiced on dummies, wondered if he had performed all the gestures correctly. But he didn't have time to doubt himself, he had to keep going until Jin came back to life and regain consciousness,  he wouldn't stop before. He resumed his cardiac massage with his regular pressures then, seeing that still nothing was happening, he yelled:

"HYUNG, YOU CAN'T GIVE UP, DO YOU HEAR ME?! WAKE UP!!"

Warm tears ran down his cheeks and hot tears were falling on Jin's chest, continuing his gestures, he sobbed softly that time:

"Please don't leave me... What am I supposed to do if you're gone, hyung? How am I supposed to live without you..."

His arms kept thumping and he felt them getting weaker and shaking more and more from the intense exertion. Soon, his movements became mechanical, and he forced himself to forget how heavy his arms were. Moreover, the injury that Lee inflicted on him before was causing him excruciating pain and blurred vision, and he was afraid of fainting as he tried to revive Jin. He forced himself to stay focused on what he was doing and forget about the pain because if he had given up on it, Jin wouldn't have had a chance anymore.

He finally completed his second session of thirty pressures then braced himself for another mouth-to-mouth, pinching Jin's cold nose between his fingers and lifting his chin to make him open his mouth.

That time, his tears fell in large drops on Jin's face and competed with the snowflakes resting there, melting them with their moist heat. They almost seemed to warm his chilled cheeks and restore Jin's skin to the warm color of life.

Jungkook's lips landed on Jin's again, perhaps for the last time, desperately blowing out all the air in his lungs to give it to Jin, when all of a sudden, after what seemed to Jungkook to be the longest minutes of his life, the miracle happened.

     Cough! Cough! Cough!

Jin began to cough violently andJungkook jerked his face away from his as he spit salt water in a jerk that lifted his entire upper body but crashed again on the wet sand where the snow had melted under his body. His body was shaking violently as the snow and cold bit into his bare wet skin, and his new breathing was frantic as his whole body filled with air and life again.

"Oh my God, hyung, y-you breathe!" Jungkook cried out in relief in a tearful voice, surrounding him with his two arms and making him sit up slightly to better spit out the water out of his chest.

Jin slowly opened his eyes that might never have opened again, meeting Jungkook's worried gaze. He wanted to speak between two quick breaths but coughed harder instead.

"Don't talk hyung, just... just breathe, don't think about anything else, breathe as much as you can!" the younger one told him, doing his best not to panic, aware that he had almost lost him again forever. A few more seconds and he would have lost all hope. "You're going to be okay now, I've got you!"

Realizing that it was difficult to breathe lying down like this and that Jin could choke in this position, he pulled him up against him, letting his back rest against his own chest.

"You're fine now, you're saved hyung," he assured him as he lowered Jin's t-shirt and sweater to cover his bare chest and stomach and began rubbing his back vigorously to warm him up and reassure him at the same time.

However, as the minutes passed, instead of looking like he was getting better, Jin looked more like he was sinking back into unconsciousness. His breathing was getting weaker again until it was almost imperceptible.

"Jin hyung?" Jungkook called uncertainly, tilting his head to observe Jin's face.

But Jin did not answer, and Jungkook suddenly realized that he had closed his eyes again and had stopped shaking, as if he had lost consciousness.

"No, no, no, hyung, stay with me!" Jungkook exclaimed, shaking him gently to wake him up, distraught to see him stop moving despite the cold and afraid that his heart had stopped again.

He grabbed Jin's hand and felt it frozen in his own hand which itself was already very cold. Then, he put his other hand on Jin's cheek and realized how cold it was. He understood what was happening: Jin was succumbing to severe hypothermia. Himself, soaked as he was still bare-chested and being exposed to such intense cold, risked seeing his body go completely numb soon too.

He had just saved Jin from cardiac arrest but now he was threatening to die of hypothermia. The cruel fate was relentless.

Carefully laying Jin on the ground where the snow had long since melted under the warmth of their two bodies, Jungkook rushed to all the clothes left on the beach by himself and Lee before diving into the water.

As he ran, he didn't give a look to the still unconscious Lee who was shirtless and all wet. If he wasn't already dead, he risked hypothermia, like Jin and Jungkook but Jungkook royally didn't care. All he cared about was saving Jin. And if Lee froze to death that night, it wouldn't be Jungkook who would mourn him.

Jungkook ran back to Jin and began to remove his wet clothes and put him on Lee's sweater and his own, double layer of clothing to warm him up as quickly as possible, as well as his own thick down jacket. For himself, who was still shirtless, he only put on his t-shirt and Lee's coat. Then, he grabbed Jin's frozen body and pulled him against him again to hug him as tight as he could and share what little warmth he had left.

"What am I supposed to do now..." Jungkook muttered frantically rubbing Jin's arms to warm them.

His head was throbbing terribly, he was starting to feel his mind drifting and having trouble collecting his thoughts, which was a bad sign: if he lost consciousness, they would both die here, that was for sure. He forced himself to concentrate for a few seconds. They had to leave this beach but then they would need care...

Suddenly his brain gave him a flash of concentration and he remembered what he had to do: call for help. He grabbed his phone from his coat pocket and quickly dialed 119. On the phone, he gave his location and gave a quick report of the situation about Jin's current state and his own, purposely omitting to say that a third dying person was on the beach with them. He didn't want to save this person.

Following this, a man with a very calm and reassuring voice promised him that help was on the way but told him that in the meantime, he would have to manage the situation.

"What is your name, young man?"

"J-Jung-k-k-kook," the singer replied, chattering his teeth because the wind was freezing.

"Alright Jungkook, I'm Hyun-Su,"  the man quickly introduced to make sure Jungkook remained calm enough to successfully complete his rescue. However, his voice jerked and crackled because the telephone network on the beach was particularly bad for long communication. "Listen Jungkook, I will guide you in what you must do but I need to know if you feel capable of it otherwise, your priority is yourself for now, not your friend. Do you feel able to take care of both of you at the same time?"

"Y-yes, I am," Jungkook assured with a new shiver, deliberately ignoring the fact that he was asked to put himself before Jin, like Han had done at the Stade de France. Never again, had promised Jungkook. He would stay there for Jin and not give up on him.

The man then began to give him instructions which Jungkook followed to the letter but the network being bad and the communication continuing to cut, Jungkook ended up hanging up.

Despite his numb fingers, he sent the other BTS members his GPS location, also asking them to notify Jin's parents and the compagny that he had found Jin. He was hoping it would reach them when the network came back. Then he put his phone in his pocket and concentrated on his mission.

He absolutely had to wake Jin up, that was what he had been told. If he fell asleep for good, it could be fatal. None of them should fall asleep. He shook him, gently at first, then more vigorously when he saw that it wasn't working.

"Hyung wake up, hurry up, you must not fall asleep!"

Jin slowly opened his eyes again and his cold blue lips moved as if he wanted to speak but no sound came out. He couldn't speak anymore as he was too weak.

"Hyung, even if it's hard, you have to stay awake," Jungkook explained with regret. "Do not fall asleep, okay?"

Jin kept his eyes half-open but remained still. Jungkook hugged him even tighter and buried his face in his wet hair before whispering:

"You have to stay alive, hyung I forbid you to die, I forbid you to leave me!"

Jungkook regretted not having picked up his socks and shoes before returning to Jin. He barely felt his feet anymore and wondered if his toes would survive this night. But it was too late to think about it. He couldn't move anymore.

He would have preferred to get away from the beach and its icy sea wind, but he didn't have the strength to carry Jin. And abandoning him was absolutely out of the question, so he stayed like that for a few minutes, trying to soothe his tremors and his own by hugging his elder as much as possible.

As he felt himself slowly losing consciousness again, he suddenly heard a faint rustle inches from his ear. He sat up, bringing his left ear close to Jin's mouth and asked softly, shivering:

     "W-what h-hyung? I-I d-d-didn't h-hear you, w-what d-d-d-did you said?"

Then Jin repeated, barely more audibly:

     "G-go... away..."
