Chapter 11 : Consequences
The show that was filmed wouldn't be broadcast for some time, but the photos and videos taken by the show's audiences circled the world in just one night. Fans reacted immediately.
Some were shocked by the two boys' haircuts, suddenly finding them ugly, others found them both cute with their haircuts tuned and previously hidden under a hat and finally others, more passionate, were already establishing links between their hairstyle and the announcement of a departure to the army.
Immediately, false information that Jungkook would soon be doing his military service at the same time as Jin circulated and gained momentum. The fans were angry:
"Baby Kookie will have plenty of time to go to the army, stop him from going now! "
"Without JK, BTS won't have any flavor, I won't follow them if he leaves."
"No but frankly, what is their company doing?"
"Can't Jin go to the army on his own?? Does he have to take our baby with him ??"
Other comments, of course defended Jin, being against his leaving as well and praising his behavior in saving Jungkook from an embarrassing situation as he had already done once with Taehyung when the latter had fallen on the red carpet in front of the cameras and that Jin had knelt down to avoid him too much embarrassment.
Jin, who had been scouring social media since waking up in the morning, knew the situation had escaped him and the company would soon signify their anger. He had only a few hours left before their wrath fell on him.
He grabbed his crutches and walked to the kitchen where Yoongi was already, sipping his iced coffee staring at his phone. The rapper looked up from his screen to watch Jin walk in
"Ah yoongi..." Jin started, catching the rapper's attention. "If we could go back, I would surely listen to you and measure the consequences of my actions before I act ...".
Yoongi gave him a sad smile.
"I have no doubt about it, hyung. "
"Sorry for not listening to you while you were thinking about my own good," Jin apologized sincerely.
"Sorry for being so hard on you," Yoongi replied, "maybe that's why I couldn't convince you to be more careful. My social interactions suck too much, I know. "
Jin shook his head in denial to reassure the other before sittingup, suddenly mentally exhausted and Yoongi got up to cook him some breakfast. The older one looked miserable. He knew the situation was not going to get better. The gates of the underworld seemed to have been opened and all kinds of horror were already coming out.
Jin, Yoongi and Namjoon left the dorm before the younger ones woke up and went to the main company building. They were to meet their managers there in the presence of the CEO of the company to discuss the relationship concerns they encountered. However, their appointment was postponed until mid-afternoon, due to an unforeseen situation for the CEO and the boys waited at the song studio, working on their tracks while they waited for the meeting.
As for Jungkook, he had woken up earlier than usual and had not stopped repeating yesterday's events since then. He hated himself for being so weak. He didn't want to appear like that anymore, he wanted to be strong. How had the gaze of others succeeded in shattering the self-confidence he had built so hard over the past few years?
The answer was obvious: he had been surrounded by so much kindness from the fans since his debut that he couldn't deal with their negative gaze. Jungkook decided it was time to change that.
He stood up and realized that the elders had already left the dormitory. Either way, he didn't want to embarrass Jin that morning when he had to meet with the CEO; better if he didn't know anything about his business today.
He went to meet Jimin and asked him to accompany him on a little road trip, without revealing their destination to him. Along the way, however, he told him of his doubts and fears, as well as his willingness to go forward and overcome them.
Jimin was sad to learn of the suffering that Jungkook had gone through. He knew that the youngest in the group had always been pampered and he had been part of this himself along with the other members, wishing Jungkook would feel confident despite his young age in their early days.
But that had not allowed the maknae to effectively prepare for the harsh reality of the idol profession, and his innocence in the face of people's meanness had left him without mental protection against attacks from fans. Jimin was nonetheless proud to see him get up after that, even though he wasn't sure how Jungkook planned to do it.
The car pulled to a halt in an uncrowded area on the outskirts of Seoul and when the two boys got out, Jimin saw that they were standing in front of a piercer's shop.
"Jungkook, don't tell me that you..."
When the CEO finally received them with their two managers in the meeting room, the atmosphere was tense around Jin, Yoongi and Namjoon. He asked them to sit down and asked one of the managers to summarize the situation and then the singers to give their version, because out of respect for the rights of elders, Si-Hyuk could not give the floor to the members of BTS first.
Thus, Sejin and Hyun started spoking of the difficulties in managing the group for some time, especially with one of the members - Jin. The latter held the gaze of the CEO when his name was given but was respectful and did not reply.
After also mentioning Namjoon's incapacity to handle the lack of discipline of its members, Yoongi's disrespect and threats during their last meeting and the fear of slackening in the attitude of the young singers, the two men left the floor to the singers.
They reported feeling less listened to, respected and protected by the compagny lately, especially Jin who tended to be often belittled even when doing his best. The CEO listened to them without a word, staring at them one by one. And when the silence was finally over, he prolonged it for a long time, raising the tension in the room.
Finally, he broke it:
"Thank you for bringing these issues up, gentlemen. I will give you my opinion on these problems and fix them immediately, it will be quick."
This man's voice was always warm when it came to talking to his protégés, but that day the tone was different: he was cold and firm. The singers sank into their seats and suddenly felt very small.
"I am quite disappointed, I have to tell you that. First of all, boys, I thought that by giving you a lot of freedom, and by surrounding yourself with love and protection rather than rigor and animosity as it is the case with other companies, you would know how to behave well and do honor to our company, becoming a band I can be proud of. I was wrong. "
The boys opened their mouths in protest but the CEO threw his phone in front of them and they froze. A photo of a shaven-headed Jungkook proudly sporting two piercings over his right eye had been posted on his social media in the morning.
He was accompanied by a selfie taken with Jin the day before, the two with their controversial new hairstyles. The publication was titled: "Love yourself".
"It's my fault, I was too forgiving and I've been too permissive so far," the CEO told the petrified boys. "And then I thought that your managers could rectify your behavioral problems without my intervention," he added, looking at the two men uneasily. "As of today, you change managers, Sejin, Hyun, my decision is irrevocable. As it is your day off, you will meet your new managers tonight in your dormitory and your work together will begin tomorrow."
Without waiting for their reaction, he stood up and left the room at these statements, leaving a bewildered assembly.
"It's a nightmare, I'm going to wake up," Namjoon whispered.
"I didn't want that, I'm sorry," Yoongi told his now ex-managers, "I just wanted some concessions from you."
"If there is still something we can do to make him reverse his decision we will," Namjoon promised promised the two men. "Working with new managers now when we are in the middle of so many projects is madness, I don't know why PD-nim absolutely insisted on making this decision. Maybe if Jungkook apologizes and does remove his piercings, he will agree to reconsider his decision."
Hyun shook his head sadly:
"It's pointless, PD-nim had already made up his mind for a while, that's obvious. Otherwise, he wouldn't already have new managers on hand : he already had replacements planned for us."
"It's true," Sejin added, "if we have been so hard lately, it is because we have been criticized more and more for our complacency towards you and because we know that our position was weakened. We tried to turn the situation around to change PD-nim's mind, but we failed miserably in his eyes and yours. We are sorry for that." He turned to Jin and bowed humbly, "Seokjin, please forgive us, we weren't right with you and pushed you to the limit, in order to right our own mistakes."
The boys took in the information and nodded but didn't know what to say. Namjoon patted a hand on Jin's shoulder, glad he could get an apology from the two men.
However, they had suffered from the be havior of their managers lately and learning that the main cause was the CEO's dissatisfaction with them did not make them feel reassured or want to forgive their managers either.
"Boys, I'll give you one last piece of advice as your manager, so listen carefully," Hyun said, "The new managers had to be chosen to enforce the new PD-nim's requirements. You should therefore be careful, at least at the beginning, not to take a false step to make him look away from your group. Reassure him with irreproachable behavior."
"But then," Sejin added, "beyond that, don't forget to be yourself. This is what got you aiming for the top and this is what will keep you there. It was also Bang Si-Hyuk's first philosophy even if he himself forgot it. You will have to remind him and deflate his head from all the success you have brought him."
The three boys nodded and Namjoon said:
"We'll try to keep that in mind, thank you. You were a part of our success too and we won't forget it."
"We were happy and honored to work with you guys, we will come to say our farewells later to the others," Hyun said, shaking their hands, as Sejin was already doing.
And despite everything wrong the managers had done lately, the three singers could not help but feel a deep and weird sense of abandonment seeing them leave.
