Chapter 23: Don't Lose Hope

Astrid's POV

I walked slowly through the darkness. I was headed straight forward, hoping to find something.

After a short while, I saw a dim light. I ran towards it, and when I reached it, I saw a huge black gate.

The gate was connected to a extremely long fence. Over the gate, there was a word beautifully written with the same black metal as the gate, probably because it was a part of the gate.

The gate was locked for some reason. I looked up and read the word.

"Helheim" I read out loud. That scared me, so much.

"Yup, that's right, honey" A female voice said. I turned around and saw Hel herself standing in front of me. I bowed down.

"No need for that, Astrid. I'm here to tell you some things" Hel said. Hel had two sides. Literally. One side of her was a beautiful woman with an emerald green eye and long blonde hair, and her skin was a beautiful milky white color.

On her head she had a crown made out of bones and knuckles, and around her neck, she had a golden necklace with a beautifully decorated pendant.

Her dress was dark blue and the edges were decorated with gold. Her long blue cape was pretty much the same as the dress, only that it was attached to the dress with a miniature shield.

The other side of Hel had black hair that had small braids sticking out almost everywhere. She didn't have an eye on that side, because that side was basically just half a skeleton.

Her skeleton side was wearing the same clothes as the non-skeleton side.

So basically, Hel was maybe the scariest woman you would ever meet.

"What do you want to tell me?" I asked her.

"You may be wondering why you are here and not in Ràn's fish net, or what she likes to call it 'her net for drowned souls'. Like seriously, who would go into that thing if she called it that?" Hel said. She sighed. I began to think, and now I was actually wondering why I was here and not in Ràn's soul net.

"Yes I am wondering, why am I here?" I asked the goddess in front of me.

"You're here because your head hit the rock first, and the rock was the thing that killed you, you didn't drown. That's why you're here" Hel said. I nodded slowly, slowly taking in the information.

"But why aren't the gates open? And why are you talking to me? I thought that you didn't talk with people unless you're tricking them" I said.

"First, the gates aren't open for you because you aren't entirely dead, and two, YES, I talk with people to trick them, but I also talk to some people who can choose if they want to live or die" Hel said.

"So... I can...choose?" I asked Hel. She nodded.

"But to help you choose, I'm going to show you some things first..."
