▪︎\\Chapter Thirty
"Can you atleast not leave me in the dark?", I asked annoyingly as I entered the back of the car. I held the envelope in my hand as Mordechai started it and drove off. He remained quiet still refusing to answer me. I had no idea where I will be dropping off the envelope. It could be anywhere and I don't know anything about Paris.
"Vanessa, stop asking ok?. When I do get there all I need you to do is go inside and ask for someone, they will know who it's from", was his reply as I processed what he said. But then something began to puzzle me and I had to find out more.
"So...why can't you drop it off yourself?", I asked as I looked at him.
"Because I'm not the assistant", was his bland reply.
I stared at him with narrowed eyes but kept quiet. Typical arrogance and bossiness. I fixed my beanie and then hugged my coat tighter. The coat I'm wearing was one of my favourites. It was a trench coat and the material was nice to the touch.
I went into my small clutch and took out my phone. I got a message from Devin asking how things were. After replying that they were good I went into my photos. I smiled when I saw the picture I took when I was standing on the jet stairs. Maybe one day I'll create a book full of past memories.
"We're here. I want you to ask for Mr. Walsh, he'll know who sent you".
His face got serious as he looked at me. I felt a bad energy surround me as I held his gaze for a few more seconds before leaving the car. I stopped and looked at the building. It wasn't anything too extravagant and the decor wasn't as eye catching. I went up the stairs and went through the double doors. It was a shop. A regular shop but it seems as if business was slow.
I saw a young girl behind the counter and went over to her side. She smiled awkwardly as she waited for me to say something.
"Hello, is Mr. Walsh here?", I asked and she pointed to the back.
"I'll go get him for you. You can look all you want, maybe something will spark your interest", she replied before going off to get him. I turned and looked at the different items that were selling. It was more of a convenience store to me.
"Hello, who are you?".
I was a bit startled as I turned and looked at a short middle aged looking man. He wore a grey suit and his eyes seemed sunken as if he was sleep deprived. He had a slim body figure and a small moustache. He also had a fluent english accent.
"Hi I'm Vanessa. I was sent by Mr. Lenetti, he said to give you this", I replied as I handed him the envelope. He took it with shaky hands and I saw his face fell depressingly. Did he knew what was inside already?. Well definitely not but it seems as if he was about to fall apart. I looked at the girl and she had the same expression as her boss.
He didn't look like he could formulate any words so I kept my curiosity to myself and left the place. I went back to the car with mixed feelings. Something was so wrong and maybe I should've read what was inside the envelope - even thou I would've been in trouble.
"Did he say anything?", Mordechai asked as he glanced over his shoulder at me. His lips were in a thin line as he struck his tongue out and licked them. I averted my eyes instantly before finally answering his question.
"He couldn't. When he saw the envelope it seems as if he was about to have a heart attack", I replied as he nod once before starting the car.
"Wait, you can let me off. I don't intend to spend the day at the penthouse alone", I said before he turned and looked at me.
"So would you rather spend the day with me? The arrogant and selfish man who doesn't like to be challenged?".
I started at him with narrowed eyebrows refusing to answer to what he just said. Ofcourse I wouldn't rather to spend the day with him. I rather die of boredom at the penthouse.
"No thanks. I just want to see the streets of Paris and maybe learn a few french words. I'll take a cab when I'm ready to go back", I said as I shrugged my shoulders. It wasn't a big deal.
"Ok, but be careful, Paris is more than what meets the eye", he said before turning around.
I opened the door and got out. I was hit with cool fresh air and then my nose caught the smell of freshly baked goods. This was going to be an unforgettable day.
"Thanks for your concern", I replied sarcastically before walking off. I passed people here and there and I couldn't get over their type of language. Like it was incredible to how they always understand what each other was saying.
I stopped at a huge monument where people were taking pictures both families and couples. I took my phone out to snap a picture when I remembered the hotdog guy. I went into my clutch and saw the paper he gave me. I dialed his number and waited for him to answer.
"bonjour, houe puis-je vous aider?".
"It's the city girl from yesterday, you gave me your number", I replied as I heard his laughter over the phone.
"Ah, it's you belle fille, how are you?. Didn't think you would actually call your guardian angel", he said with a small chuckle at the end.
"Well I did. I need someone to tour me around and even though I'm not trusting you fully, I still need company", I told him as I looked around.
"No problem chérie. Where are you exactly?".
"I have no idea. I'm staring at a huge monument where alot of persons are taking photos. It has the shape of an arc and its white in colour", I said as I described my surroundings to him.
"Oh, that's the Arc de Triomphe. It has a wonderful history behind it. You can stay there, I'll be there in a few", he said as I heard the sound of an engine starting.
I end the call and went to sit on a bench near to where a man was painting a mother and her son. So incredible how someone can actually replicate a real human being with only the stroke of a brush. Paris was beyond what I imagined. It was a place of opportunities and leisure with no limits.
Too bad I will be leaving soon.
"Bonjour".
I looked to my right and saw the guy smiling away like crazy. He must've been very close by if he reached this quickly. It's either that or he had some form of speed power.
"Hi", I replied getting up and looking at him. He held his hand out and I took it willingly.
"I'm Daniel, nice to meet you", he said but the smile never left his face.
"Vanessa, nice to meet you too", I replied giving him a small smile.
"The name suits you. So I'm here to do my job which is to tour you around. Lets begin because Paris has a lot for you to see".
I blinked a few times as he walked over to a motorcycle and waved me over. He wasn't expecting me to get on that was he?.
"How else are we going to get around Paris in this traffic chérie?", he asked when I went up to him.
"I don't want to get hurt", I told him but he only laughed.
"You can trust me. Erase your fears and don't let go no matter what", he responded as he placed a helmet on my head. It was a bit heavy but not uncomfortable.
"Ready chérie?", he asked as he glanced at me. I exhaled deeply before wrapping my hands around his chest and steadying myself.
"Ready", I answered before he smirked and sped off.

"This day was a blast", I said before taking a bite of my burger. Daniel showed me so many places and even taught me how to pronounce their names correctly. He took me to a huge fountain and offered me a penny to make a wish. My wish was to let everything work out how they should and that hopefully I will be able to visit Paris in the future.
"Vanessa, Paris is a wonderful place. Eveything about it is a blast. If you weren't leaving on Tuesday I would take you to a ballet concert on Friday. It is a very mesmerising stage show to witness", he told me before taking a bite of his own burger.
We were both sitting on a bench just staring out at the sea after buying two cheese burgers. The sea was mesmerising as the waves move in perfect synchronization.
"How long have you been living in Paris?", I asked once my burger was finished.
"For ten years. I was born in England but my parents moved here due to some issues and I've been living here since", he answered as he looked at me.
"How was England?".
"It was alright...but Paris is fantastic. I don't have any regrets about here", he said with a smile.
I didn't ask anything after that. We just sat there in peaceful silence enjoying the cool breeze and the sound of the sea.
I wish this could last forever.
This peace.
This silence.
This tranquility.
But reality always hits us in the face. Even too hard at times.
"So what exactly are you doing in Paris?", he asked as he turned to face me.
"I'm an assistant so I'm here with my boss", I relied as he nod in understanding.
He looked at the watch on his hand before rising to his feet.
"I have to be somewhere. It was nice learning about you and also touring you around Vanessa, maybe I'll see you again before you leave", he said holding his hand out once more.
"Nice to hang with you also Daniel", I told him truthfully as I took his hand.
"Mon plaisir belle fille", he replied in french while wiggling his eyebrows and I laughed.
I think I've just made an awesome french friend.
