Chapter 8

Previously on Chapter 7

I hug my knees as I glare at the letter, watching it burn into flame through the endless tears flowing down from my eyes. Eventually the burden got too much to handle. I burst into tears and bury my face in my arms that's hugging my knees. Why... why Merlin... why did you chose me? Why can't it be someone else... why does it have to be me!!

Oh... how I hate my life

-The Chamber Of Secrets-

Y/N P.O.V

I just sit there, by the fireplace as I watch the flame dancing around. I've calmed down, but there are still a few tears that slips out of my eyes. I just wipe them away once in a while, only for more to come.

I turn my head to look at the clock. It's still around 9, I still have one hour before curfew. I let out a sigh. 'I need some fresh air...' I thought to myself. I wipe the remaining tears and stand up from my spot. I make my way out of the common room. Then I walk down the corridor.

In the distance, I notice 3 figures standing next to the wall. I furrow my eyebrow and walk closer. I realize it's Potter and his friends.

They turn to look at me. I look at them for a bit and turn my head towards the wall, where they've been staring. My eyes widened when I see blood written message.

"The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir... beware. What's that suppose to mean?" I said, turning to look at the trio. They look at me speechless. I notice something hanging and turn my head.

There's a cat hanging by its tail. I gasp in shock when I saw it. I turn to the trio. "What have you done?" I said. "N-No... i-it w-wasn't us..." Hermione stuttered out. "Well... how does this happen then?" I asked. I notice other students walking towards us.

"What's going on, Duchanne?" Malfoy said. I turn my head to look at him, then gesture the blood in the wall. He furrow his eyebrow and turn to look at the wall.

I can see his eyes scanning the words. "Enemies of the heir beware? You'll be next mud-blood!" he said, turning to look at Granger. I roll my eyes at what he said. I was about to make a comment when someone cuts me off.

"What's going on here? Make way! Make way!" The person said. Argus Filch comes into view. I frown and turn my head to look at the trio, then back at Argus.

"Ms. Norris..." he said. He turns to look at Harry with anger in his eyes. "You... murdered my cat?" He said. "N-No..." Potter said, shaking his head. I can see in his eyes that he's not responsible for what had happened to Ms. Norris.

"I'll kill you... I'LL KILL YOU!!" He yelled, grabbing a hold of Potter's collar. I speed walk towards him and remove his hand from Potter's collar, I stand in front of Potter, shielding him from Filch's anger.

"He didn't kill your cat, sir... I can see it in his eyes" I said, keeping my face emotionless. He turns to look at me in annoyance. "Then who did??" He said. "I don't know..." I said. I don't even know why I stood up for him.

"What is going on here?" I heard someone said. I turn my head to the direction. The students move to give ways to the Professors. Professor Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, Professor Snape, and lastly, Professor Lockhart.

They look at the message on the wall, then turn to look at us. I'm still standing in front of Potter in case Mr. Filch tries to do something again.

"Everyone, return to your respective houses" I hear Professor Dumbledore. We all turn around and was about to leave. "Everyone except you three... and Y/N too..." he added. I let out a sigh and turn to face the Professor, while the rest of the students walks away.

"She's not dead, Albus..." Professor Dumbledore said. "Hah... how unlucky I wasn't there. I know exactly what I can do..." Professor Lockhart said. I just raise an eyebrow at him, but didn't say anything.

"But how exactly did she ended up being petrified?" Professor Dumbledore said. "Ask him" Mr. Filch said, gesturing towards Potter. "He's the one that done it. He's also the one that wrote the messages on the wall" he added. Potter shakes his head. "I swear, I never touched her, Professor" he said. Professor Snape walk towards him.

But before he could say anything, I step in front of Potter. "I've already told Mr. Filch, Professor Snape. Potter didn't do anything..." I said. "And what makes you so sure about that?" He said. I hesitate for a bit, but I let out a sigh.

"I can read his mind..." I finally said. "You can... do what?" He said. "Read. His. Mind" I said, pressing each words. He looks at me with judging face. "And what makes you think I'll believe that?" He said. I just stare at him.

Then I take a few steps towards him. "You were in love with Potter's mother... Lily Potter" I said, in a hush tone so he's the only one that can hear me.

I take a few steps back and observe his reaction. He is looking at me with shocked expression. "Do you believe me now? How would I know about that if I don't just go inside your mind, Professor? After all, I don't know much about you, do I?" I said, smirking at him. The others just look at us back and forth.

Professor Dumbledore nods his head. "Potter will be innocent until proven guilty... now off you go..." he said. The trio turns around and walk away. I just send another smirk towards Professor Snape. Then I turn around and walk away.

"Just a second, Ms. Duchanne..." I hear Professor Dumbledore said. I let out a sigh and turn to walk back towards him. "Come with me..." he said. Then he walks towards a certain direction.

He leads me to his office and enter. I enter the room after him. He take a seat on his desk and stare at me. I just stare back at him while standing across his desk.

"I believe you owe some explanation to do..." he said, looking at me with a stern expression. "It's a family matter, Professor. So with all due respect. I can't tell anyone about this..." I said. "Hmm... I understand Ms. Duchanne..." he said, with a much softer voice. I can see the doubt in his eyes. I let out a sigh as I don't want anyone to see me as a threat.

"I guess I can tell you, since I don't want Hogwarts or anyone to see me as a threat... but I need to know if you'd tell anyone about this?" I said. He smiles softly at me. "Of course not... your secret will stay within this room only. If you don't believe what I said... feel free to read my mind" he said. I can see the sincerity in his eyes.

I hesitate a bit, whether I should just tell him or back down. I read his mind and find out he's telling the truth. Now I believe that he will keep this to himself.

I take a deep breath to calm my nerve. I slowly reach up and take off my eyepatch, with my head down. I bit my lips and look up, giving him a full view of my right eye.

I can see his eyes widened just a bit. "This is a secret my family have been keeping for a while, Professor" I start. He stays silent as he wait for me to continue.

"It was long before me and my sister were born. Our ancestor... uses a forbidden magic to bring her lover back to life. In result, losing herself to the dark side. She became a dark witch... or caster as our family preferred to be called..." I said. I let out a shaky breath as I prepare myself to tell him the secret my family have been holding.

"Then... years later. My older sister and I were born. But the curse remains even after such a long time. There's something called The Claiming. During the proses, our natural will decide which side of both light and dark we belong to... my sister turned into a dark witch on her 16th birthday. The same thing will happen to me 4 years from now... when I turn 16 years old..." I said. I decided to keep the whole being a Prime Merlin a secret.

"Then in fear of losing control. My family... the Duchanne finally decided to decrease our strength in magic by transferring it into various kinds of trees... the trees that provided the magical woods Oliviander used to make wands... but even after that... we're still unable to break the curse... we can only alter it. But it will be stronger on the day we turn 16... the day The Claiming will happen. Only our natural can decide which sides we're more dominant..." I said.

Professor Dumbledore stays silent as he process the information I've just informed him. "So... I guess the rumors are true. Your family... is indeed related to the first people that discover magic..." he said. I just nod my head, confirming that it's true.

"Not related, Professor... my family ARE the people that discovered magic... the people that wrote down the history have been told differently, because of... um... fear... we fear that people will be scared of us. With the curse that runs through the family... they wanna make sure the next generations won't be treated differently by others... so they twisted the fact and filled it with made up stories..." I said. He looks at me, not knowing what else to say.

"Please Professor... please make sure no one else knows about this. I'll be in so much trouble for sharing such secret with someone who have no relation with us..." I said, in a pleading tone. He smiles and nods his head. "You have not to worry, my dear... as I said before. What we talked here will remain ONLY in this room... thank you for trusting me enough to tell me such a deep secret... you may go now..." he said, giving me a soft smile. A smile makes its way to my face. I lift the eyepatch and cover my right eye.

"Thank you so much, Professor. Have a good rest..." I said, bowing at him. Then I turn around and leave his office. I sure hope I don't regret choosing to tell him the real history of magic.
