Part 16
When you woke up on the morning of the breakout, you couldn't stop thinking about Gabe's warning. After he had given you all the warning the night before, he hadn't spoken another word. Nikolai had told you and Clara that Gabe had fallen asleep soon after he had finally gotten up and limped over to his cot. When you stood up to stretch, you felt a pain in your stomach. You assumed it was from the food since the guards had changed your meals quite a bit since The Three had started going on missions. You all assumed it was because they were trying to give you foods that would positively effect your performances while on missions.
You hadn't been awake long when you heard Nikolai start talking. He must have been telling Clara to wake up, because she had still been asleep, and soon her eyes opened up. She smiled and soon sat up. She said something too him and then looked over at you.
"Good morning, (Y/N)." She said with a yawn.
"Good morning." Clara stood up and stretched before walking over to the bars of her cell.
"We never discussed when we would be doing...well...you know what." Said Clara. She then translated what she said for Nikolai. He then spoke up. "Nikolai says that we should do it after the guards bring our lunch. What do you think?" You shrugged your shoulders.
"I don't care." You were starting to regret the whole thing. Clara noticed your uncertainty.
"Are you sure that you want to go through with this? If you don't want to, we don't have to. We can wait and see if anyone comes to rescue us. Based on what you've told us about your husband, he's probably already planning a rescue mission with all of your heroic friends." You shook your head.
"No, we need to go today. It's too late now to back out." Clara nodded her head. Nikolai started to talk again. Clara looked over at him and smiled.
"He says that he knew you wouldn't back out on us." You were slightly puzzled.
"How did he know that I didn't back out?"
"He's getting good at hearing emotion in people's voices, and also he was looking at me, so he saw my reaction. I feel bad for him having to do it though, that's why when we get out of here, I'm teaching him English." You smiled.
"Well, after you teach him, I'm going to tell him thank you for everything he has done." Clara grinned and hid her face. You knew that she was blushing. Her face would start to turn red at any mention of Nikolai. That's why it was important that you all tried to escape as soon as possible. You couldn't let their relationship suffer because you didn't want to escape.
You all heard the sound of the guards coming in to give you your lunch rations. They opened up the slots in all four of your cells and slide trays through. Gabe, who you all assumed was still asleep, made no movement as the guards caused the rusty metal hinge on the slot to creak. Once the four of you had received your meals, the guards left, securing the door after them. You, Clara, and Nikolai all ate small portions of your food to give the appearance that everything was as it normally was. Then it was time.
Clara summoned the vines from her hands and as they filled up the inside of the canisters on her hands, the canisters finally burst apart. She then moved over and unlocked her door. She then stood between your and Nikolai's cells and used a different vine on each lock to unlock your cells. When you two were both free, you looked over at Gabe, who still lay unrespondent.
"What about Gabe? Should be get him out too?" You asked. Clara shook her head as she walked over to the large door at the end of the hallway.
"We don't have time. We need to get out of here as fast as we can, before the guards notice that we are gone." Clara then began to start unlocking the door. There was no mechanism to unlock the door from the inside, but there was a space under the door for her to snake the vines through. She moved the vines around once she had located the lock mechanism. Every time that the guards had taken you out of the hallway for missions, Clara had been memorizing the outer design of the door. That memorizing was now coming in hand. After a few moments of her moving the vines around, the door unlocked. You all pushed against it, and it creaked open.
The three of you entered the larger hallway that was outside of the hallway with the cells. You all looked around and seeing no one in sight, you all headed straight down the hallway towards the compound's exit. You glanced to your right as you passed by another hallway in which a guard was standing. He happened to look towards you all just as you walked by.
He started to call for backup, but Nikolai tan towards him and threw the guard against the wall, knocking him unconscious. He then joined you and Clara as a group of guards found you. They formed a circle around all of you. You looked at Clara and Nikolai who were standing to your left and right respectively. They glanced at you before you all prepared yourselves for the impending fight.
There appeared to be about twenty guards, all ranging in height and build. One of the guards, who appeared to be of a higher rank than the others, gave a loud yell and the guards all swarmed the three of you. You all fought as best as you could, which was pretty well since you were trained assassins. It wasn't long before all of the guards were lying on the floor, either dead or unconscious. You all honestly didn't care.
As you all triumphantly walked away from the crowd, when one threw what you assumed was an apple at you. You looked back at them questioningly as the "apple" hit your boot. You picked it up and right when you were about to make a comment about it, it exploded, for, unlike you had assumed, it was a grenade and it had exploded in your hand. You fell back, and the last thing that you felt before you blacked out was a searing pain in your right hand.
--------------------------------------------------------
When you woke up, the first thing that you felt was pain. Then you heard voices.
"What do you mean you didn't know until now?"
"You had made it so that the prisoners were getting more food in order to keep them looking healthy for their missions."
"Don't you blame this on me! It isn't my fault!"
"No, she is to blame, but by the looks of it, it won't be that long before action must be taken. She appears to be about seven months along." You heard something being thrown across the room, then a loud sigh.
"Will the procedure be affected by this?"
"No, it shouldn't affect it, but it appears as though she has woken up."
"Well, put her under again. The surgeon will be here any moment. With any luck, her hand will look as good as Winter's arm did."
