We Meet Again
Ten years had passed and the girl grew beautifully. The entire town loved her and showed her their magic, tricks, and spells. The owl that had passed through her years ago gave her the ability to turn into him and visit the outside world. When she was 13 she was appointed for the barrier gaurdian for Halloween since the old owl was her spirit animal. If any small child came into Halloween, she would give them another chance at life, nursing them back to heath. The one thing she wished to have. Over the years she saved tons of children, giving them happy long lives. Of course they don't remember her, but she was content with that.
One day, as she stood barely outside the black mist that was the entrance to Halloween, a boy her age went up to the man in white. This was normal since mostly only children got side tracked to Halloween. See, children have the most unfinished business, having an entire life they could not live. But most children just go to the bearded man and walk up the stairs, being happy when they died. But some, like Mary had a mission to accomplish, or someone they needed to see, so she gave them back to there family's with no memory of dying whatsoever.
She looked back at the boy and studied him closer. His skin had a slight blue tint and he had bruses all over his arms and legs. He had a tattered blue shirt and some denim jeans. His hair was black and waved above him like he was floating in water. He looked back and pointed to the darkness. The man started leading him up the stairs shaking his head no. The boy insisted on going towards it and the bearded man obliged. The boy walked down the stairs and toward Mary. She smiled and greeted him. "Why have you come here?" her voice was caring. His eyes widened in shock. "Mary?" he engulfed her in a wide hug. "I thought I'd never see you again!"
She hugged him back, trying to remember who he was. A little whisper in her mind said, Freddy.
And she gasped. "Freddy? You mean the one that lived next door?"
"Yea! I thought I'd never see you again! After the accident, and-" his eyes started tearing up.
"Did you? At the lake?" She looked at his clothes and skin. Her eyes were full of concern and started filling up as well.
He nodded slowly, hugging her again. They stayed there for a minute before letting each other go.
"How did you recognize me? We were only 6 when I left."
He chuckled slightly. "Because you have the same soal, and the same eyes. You've gotten a lot taller though."
She smiled, brushing his cheek with her thumb.
"Still not taller than you unfortunately."
They both laughed.
"Where do you live now? In there?"
He pointed to the black mist.
"Yea. It's creepy but you get used to it."
They looked at each other in the eyes before hugging once more.
"Your dad was so sad when you left. I looked around everywhere for you before my mom told me the truth." He buried his face in her shoulder.
"Remember when we used to go it the tree house and our parents thought that we would fall and yell at us to come down, but we just kept climbing and climbing?"
"Of course. We used to play pirates together." They laughed and stood there just holding each other.
"You probably don't want to go here. You need to go back up those stairs."
"Can I come with you? I can't go up those stairs and not see you again." His eyes watered as he spoke, and his voice cracked.
She thought for a second. She knew what her job was. To send people home. He couldn't stay for long. But, why couldn't he visit for a few days, then she could sent him back home.
"Yea. Come with me."
They walked through the mist and walked down the path. They got to the dimly lit plaza and were greeted by everyone. Sally, Jack, the boys, the witches, Dracula, the mayor, and everybody else.
They welcomed him in and greeted him politely. They may be monsters, but they still have manners.
He seemed to fit in well. She thought to herself. What if he stayed? No he can't. She shook the thought out of her mind.
The moon was full and bright. The citizens had gone in, snuggling the children into their comfy coffins, and listening to the creaking and howls of the town.
Freddy went up to Mary.
"Wanna go for a walk?"
"Sure."
They headed out to her favorite spot in the town. The cliff. What she liked most about it is that if you walked off, the curly end would un curl to create a path down to the graves and statues, instead of just falling.
"I can't believe after all this time you remember me." She looked at him caringly and they took a seat on the top of the cliff.
"How could I forget my best friend? I went to your funeral, I- I was so sad. I promised myself I wouldn't forget you."
She gave him a smile.
"How's my dad doing?"
He gave her a look of simpithy. "Not great actually. He always where's black, and hasn't smiled in years."
"That's... horrible."
"Yea it's sad."
She realized that his mother would be feeling the same way her father was.
They were in silence for a moment. Before she spoke again,
"Your mom must be really sad about loosing you."
He hung his head low.
"I guess, she would be." His eyes turned red and he had a look of guilt.
"I can bring you back. To your old life. To your mom. It'll be like you never drowned. I can do it. Just say the word." She looked him strait in the eyes.
He looked up at her in disbelief. "H- How?"
"I'm the guardian of the barrier. I can bring you in, and just as fast take you out of this world. It's a gift I have, and knowing your alive- knowing your mom isn't grieving, would bring me peace."
He smiled before realizing something.
"I wouldn't remember seeing you again. Would I?"
She sighed before answering.
"No, you would forget me. Forget dying."
He sighed as well and cupped her cheek with his hand. She leaned into it.
He hugged her, and she hugged him back. Tears started flowing down both of there cheeks. They touched foreheads and sat there for a moment. There breath mingled for a moment before he ushered one thing, "I won't forget you."
She smiled before closing her eyes.
"I'll still be here when you come back."
He leaned in for a kiss, and she did too. They were almost together, only millimeters apart, when they gently pulled their heads apart. They both knew the other wanted too. And they both knew they couldn't.
They fell asleep together. Laying down on the cliff, looking towards the moon.
When he woke up he was startled to see the girl again, this time in daylight. He was proped up against a tree and his lungs were filled with clean air. She kissed him on the cheek before leaving through a low mist. He smiled for a moment, remembering her, before a herd of people came rushing him out of the woods, putting him on a stretcher and into a ambulance.
