Chapter 2: A Little Sneaking
Berylla...
I groaned and rolled over.
"Berylla!"
I sat bolt upright and glanced around the room.
No one was there...
I rubbed my eyes. Yawning, I laid back down, telling myself I was dreaming.
"Berylla!"
A familiar voice sounded outside my window.
"Wha..."
I got up, shaking my head.
Once the window was open, I saw Merry and Pippin outside.
They beckoned for me to follow them.
I shut the window again, closed the curtains and then got dressed.
I snuck down the hall, taking extra care as I walked past my uncle's room.
Upon reaching the door, I grabbed my cloak in case it was chilly.
I grimaced as the door creaked open.
I slipped out and closed it as quietly as I could.
I turned around and Pippin was standing directly in front of me.
"Pippin!" I squeaked.
"What?" He said, looking confused.
"You scared me, that's all."
I laughed quietly.
"Now what on earth did you wake me up for? It had better be good..."
"It is." Merry said excitedly.
Pippin nodded beside him.
"Follow me!" They said at the same time.
Pippin was snickering a little in front of me.
"What?" I questioned.
"It's just.. Your hai-" Merry hastily put a hand over his mouth.
"Your hair looks nice..." Merry finished.
My hair looks nice... Oh.
I tried to smooth it down a bit.
"We haven't got time for that. Come on!" Merry sounded exasperated.
"I'm coming!" I whispered and ran after them.
I tripped over a particularly large flower pot in front of Ms. Primula Grubb's fence, our neighbor.
I cringed as the flower pot shattered. Merry looked back and shook his head.
"Hurry up!" He said softly.
I heard movement inside Primula's house and got up quickly. I ran as fast as I could to catch up with Merry and Pippin.
It was a dark, cloudy night and the moon couldn't be seen.
"What are we doing?!" I gasped.
"You'll see." Was the only answer I received.
Ugh...
Finally they stopped, right outside of Bag End. Gandalf's cart was outside.
After catching our breath, Merry quickly informed me of what "we" were doing.
"You know how yesterday-"
"Gandalf caught us blowing up that big firework?" Pippin interrupted.
Merry glared at him, then continued.
"Well, we were made to do the dishes-"
Pippin shuddered.
"And, as an extra, he decided to have us clean his horse cart."
I nodded.
"So..." Pippin grinned sheepishly.
"We snuck around in his cart, and found this."
Merry grinned proudly and held up a small object which I couldn't see in the darkness.
"What is it?" I asked curiously.
"The last firecracker!" Pippin said excitedly.
I suddenly perceived what they were about to do and shook my head.
"No no no-"
"Come on!" Merry pleaded.
"You know you want to..." Pippin grinned.
I began walking away.
"He won't even know we're here! Look!" Merry pointed at a large oak tree nearby, which all three of us could comfortably hide behind.
"Please, Berylla..." Pippin said sadly.
"It wouldn't be the same without you..." Merry pleaded again.
I rolled my eyes.
"Fine. And what if we're caught?"
I voiced what surely we all were thinking.
"We won't be. But in case we are-"
Of course...
"Run strait across this wheat field towards Berylla's home as fast as you can. Every hobbit for himself-"
"Or herself." Pippin finished.
"Well that's great." I snapped.
Merry grabbed the small firework and prepared to light it.
"Ready?" He said excitedly.
"I guess..." I sighed.
He lit it and we raced to the tree as fast as we could.
Snap!
It went off.
I trembled a little, fearing the wrath of Gandalf should he find us.
The door opened.
I peeked around the side of the tree.
A very angry looking wizard stomped towards the firework and glared around. His eyes were kindled to a flame.
Shaking his head, he looked around one last time and headed back indoors.
I sighed. That was easy...
Merry and Pippin fell over laughing.
Wait a minute...
I listened and someone was approaching!
"Shh!" I squeaked.
I kicked Merry and he stopped laughing and glared at me.
"Listen" I mouthed to him.
He sat stock still.
Pippin continued sniggering, oblivious to what was happening.
Merry whispered "Run!"
And run we did.
I heard Pippin shriek.
I turned around and Gandalf had caught him by the ear.
I looked back at Merry, worried for my friend.
"He'll be fine..."
He whispered.
"Gandalf wouldn't... Hurt him, would he?" I whimpered.
"Confound it all, Peregrin Took!"
The wizard's voice rang out.
"Merry made me do it!" Pippin wailed.
"He's giving us away!" Merry began running.
I followed as fast as I could.
I felt a twinge of guilt at leaving Pippin behind, but then again Merry had said "every hobbit for themselves..."
Finally we reached my uncle's home.
"Is Pippin alright?"
I asked again.
"He's fine, no thanks to you."
I whirled around.
"Pippin!" I hugged him.
He blushed and backed away.
"What happened?"
"Well, Gandalf was really mad..."
Pippin shivered.
"I thought he was going to hurt me, but he didn't..." He trailed off.
"Tomorrow, ALL of us are to be back at Bag End at ten in the morning, to help Sam Gamgee work on the garden." Pippin muttered.
Merry fell to his knees.
I sighed.
It never pays...-
