6: Turning Into

Lukas asked the nurse as soon as she came in to serve lunch. "Where is Mathias? Why isn't he here?" He asked her, but the nurse just gave him a sad smile and walked out. He decided to go find out himself. He tried to get into his wheelchair, and with a lot of effort, he did it. He sat comfortably, and he maneuvered out of the room. He went into elevators, scanned the whole hospital, but no sign of the man he would even go as far as call his friend.

"Mathias Køhler is at the moment being held in room 024. He lost consciousness this morning, and he is trying to be woken up. He hasn't showed any sign of consciousness yet, but his heart rate and breathing are steady. We will inform you when you can go see him." The nurse gave him a smile. "It's nice to see you care for a change, Mr. Bondevik."

---

Lukas couldn't help but feel sad. There was some form of joy he felt when Mathias was around him, more than he'd ever felt with Vladimir and Arthur. The Dane was easy to talk to, and he was easy to read. He talked a lot, but that was okay, because he made up for Lukas' lack of talking. He had no problem whatsoever with doing the stupidest shit for Lukas, the opposite actually, he did everything with a smile. Lukas had never in his life felt so safe.

That Mathias was not showing up for a day, made Lukas a little anxious. His mind started to go all over the place, and he kept thinking of worst-case scenarios. He couldn't seem to laugh or even smile, like he had only done for Mathias before, and he felt himself grow colder again by the minute. He had to know what was going on. He needed some control over the situation, but he couldn't seem to get a grip.

Around noon, the nurse came in again, with a tray of food. She said nothing, because for once she could read the Norwegian's expression, and it wasn't good. He seemed angry, and sad, at the same time. The nurse left without a word, and Lukas was glad about that for once. This way, he had time to think. Why did it affect him so much that Mathias had to be put under special care? Why did it bother him so much that he wasn't here to help him?

He didn't know the answer, because he hadn't felt anything like this in a very long time. And a very long time means a very long time. He hadn't missed anyone, because his friends visited often, and he didn't expect his little brother to come anymore, so he only saw him once in the last year.

He had never really missed someone like Mathias. No-one had been as important to him as Mathias, and he never thought he could feel like this, but he could. And he didn't like it.

---
Later that day, the same nurse as before came in. "Mr. Bondevik? Mathias is awake, if you want to visit him?" She said, and Lukas visibly perked up a little bit. He never showed his emotions like that. "Yes, please." He said. His monotone voice seeming a little less monotone, if that was possible.

And so the nurse showed Lukas the way to the room Mathias was laying in.

When Lukas entered the room, Mathias seemed to smile a little. He was obviously very tired, but somehow he managed to smile for Lukas. "Stupid Dane, why did you scare me like that?" Lukas asked him, seeming a bit relieved. Mathias shook his head a bit before answering. "I'm sorry, it was nothing. I'm fine now. The doctor wants me to rest here for a bit, so I'll do that. In a few days, I'll be back to care for you!" The Dane seemed optimistic, even when he looked to tired. But, somehow, the smile didn't seem genuine.
