There's Nothing Like Summer In The City

Summer normally starts in June, so that's when this story will. Peter was just doing his thing, watching anime with college pamphlets sprawled all over his bed, using his medically-enforced time off to do absolutely nothing productive. He had just eaten another sandwich, because he is a bottomless pit, when he received a phone call from Flash.

He picked up the phone, casually answering with a "Hey man, hows it going?". That casual tone was quickly thrown away when he heard the banging and yelling on the other side of the line. "EUGENE!! OPEN THIS DOOR AND FACE YOUR CONSEQUENCES LIKE A MAN!!!"

Flash whimpered, "I-I'm scared. He's n-n-never been this mad before. And...oh god...". Peter, thanks to his sensitive hearing, heard the click of a gun being put off safety with his friend. "He's actually going to kill me.", Flash muttered, barely audible.

Peter jumped up, slipping on his shoes and grabbing his keys as he dashed out the door. "Have you called 911 yet?", the brunette asked anxiously. "Uh huh.", Thompson mumbled. "I locked myself in the bathroom." "What about Jesse? Where is she?", Peter asked, opting to run rather than wait for a subway. "In her room.", Flash mumbled, a sigh of relief hitched in fear when the banging started again. Peter doubled in speed.

"I'm on my way, as fast as I can.", the teen tried to reassure. He could see the porch getting closer. The cops weren't there yet. What was taking them so long?

"OPEN THIS GODDAMN DOOR OR I'M GONNA SHOOT IT DOWN!!", he could hear Mr. Thompson shout, from both the phone and the house.

"ONE!!" The teen went around the back, going through it enough to know the door wasn't locked.

"TWO!!!" Peter quietly ran up the stairs, defensively positioning himself as he finished with a stoic tone. "Three."

Mr. Thompson turned around, only to get knocked out by Peter's blow. If he was on patrol, the superhero might've felt a little guilty for not rolling his punches enough, but this man just threatened his friend and that was not going to fly. Taking a deep breath, Peter got up and quietly knocked on the door.

"Flash?", the teen asked meekly. He could hear the lock quickly click, but the door slowly opened. His friend's hands were still shaking as it held the phone and the door. There was a fresh shiner on his left eye and a bloody nose. Clear evidence that the man had gotten a few hits in before the call was made.

Peter took his friend by the shoulders to steady him. "Repeat after me, man. In," Peter instructed, taking an exaggerated breath. "Out. In, out." He repeated. Flash followed along, adrenaline dissipating. The two looked outside before Peter could finally, finally, hear the sirens growing closer.

The Thompson siblings held each other close as they watched the long-overdue sight of their father getting handcuffed and put in a police car. Peter stood by them protectively, before eventually asking, "Think you're gonna be alright?" Flash looked up at him and nodded with a genuine smile. "Thank you.", Jesse mumbled, still not letting go of her brother. "Of course.", the teen responded.

He stayed and hung out with the two until the last cop left. Mrs. Thompson offered to have him stay for dinner, but Peter politely declined. "With all due respect, ma'am, I should probably head home." "Would you like a ride, then? Surely there must be something we can do to repay you."

"I'm fine. Thank you for the offer, though.", he responded, giving Flash a pat on the shoulder before heading out the back, towards the apartment as the sky began to darken.

(hacking noises): so, i got the stuff. Heading your way now.

thwip-thwip: Noice.

Nyoom: what're you two talking about?

(hacking noises): Nothing

thwip-thwip: Nothing

Our Overlord: Oh yes, that isn't suspicious in the slightest.

Our Overlord: What're you two doing?

(hacking noises): Well, I'm going to Peter's apartment.

thwip-thwip: And I was just helping May get ready for her date.

(hacking noises): Hol up.

Our Overlord: Wait a minute.

Nyoom: Fill my cup, put some liquor in it.

(hacking noises): Since when was that a thing.

thwip-thwip: Apparently she and Happy are, as of three weeks ago. And I found out yesterday.

Our Overlord: I just cringed. I can taste the salt from across the country.

thwip-thwip: I didn't ask for this.

thwip-thwip: I mean, I already look at Happy like an uncle, but if something goes wrong, things like Thanksgiving and Christmas are just going to be awkward.

thiwp-thwip: Like, me levels of awkward.

Nyoom: How about we talk about something else then

(hacking noises): Like?

45 minutes later

Nyoom: How about we scheme up something?

Nyoom: A huge troll of some sort.

thwip-thwip: Alright, I'm down.

(hacking noises): you have something in mind?

Nyoom: MJ

Nyoom: for homecoming queen

Our Overlord has left the chat

Nyoom: Hear me out! It'd be like, out of pure sarcastic irony.

thwip-thwip: Hold on, I'll get her.

Our Overlord: So, what you're saying is, this would be my way to protest against this pretentious popularity contest?

Our Overlord: By participating and screwing with the system?

(hacking noises): i mean, if you wanna look at it that way.

thwip-thwip: I think the whole idea would be kind of funny. It's not like we'd actually put effort into the campaign, so we're not gonna really support it.

thwip-thwip: If you don't wanna tho, just say the word.

30 minutes later

Our Overlord: Yeah

(hacking noises): yeah?

Our Overlord: Yeah. Ok.

Our Overlord: Let's do it.

Nyoom: Whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

thwip-thwip: YEET!

Our Overlord: Yeah, yeah.

"You boys have fun!!", May said as a goodbye, hugging Peter and Ned tightly. They were about to go on a private jet to LA for Anime Expo, to enjoy almost no supervision. Well, Happy was going with them, but that was only to make sure that the two teens wouldn't get themselves killed.

They both hugged her just as tightly back, waving goodbye until May had gone back to her car. Peter and Ned looked at each other, grins getting wider by the second. They did their secret handshake before literally dashing to the jet.

Ned walked around, completely awed at everything. "This is so cooooooooooool.", he nearly shouted. Peter pulled out his camera and started recording, smiling from behind. "Hey, dude, sit down, we're about to take off.", Parker instructed, patting the seat next to him. Ned nodded, plopping into the seat by the window.

The engine started up, roaring loudly. Ned looked out the window, watching the aircraft move and take off. "Woah", he breathed out. "And how many of these have you been on?"

"Uhhh, only one. Two, if you count the Toomes incident, but I don't because I was on the outside of the plane.", Peter answered, trying to shrug away the bad memories that had brought. Ned nodded in understanding, deciding to pull out his computer and start on a different conversation topic. It was about fifteen minutes when Happy had fallen asleep.

"Hey, man, shh.", Peter quieted, pulling out his camera. Ned got quiet and heard the loud snores as well, snickering slightly. The teen laughed with his friend, shutting the camera off after the initial reaction. It didn't take them much longer before the plane landed in Los Angeles.

Now, I'm sure more than one of you would've liked to see something dramatic happen, but Nah. Unless you count breaking the Internet for sarcastically responding to a confused Steve. ("What are you two wearing?" "Says the guy who fights enemies in a practically skintight suit." "It's called fashion, sweetie. Look it up.") They went to the entire Expo, cosplayed differently every day and had an absolute blast. California was a lot of fun.

After they got home, sunburned and exhausted, the two thanked Tony profusely before taking a 13-hour nap.

Tony finished with the last of the streamers, before climbing down the stepstool and observing his work. The room was covered with red and blue birthday decorations. Today was Peter's...18th birthday. Yeah, Tony can't believe it either. His son was an adult. Legally, anyway. Only about three of the Avengers might check out mentally; Tony and Peter were surely not one of them.

There was going to be a surprise party for him this afternoon. It was going to have, friends, cake, gifts, even decorations as mentioned before. The man knew his son wasn't exactly one for extravagance, but this was kind of a milestone. He's eighteen, not long after he'll be graduating high school, and then college and then--nope, that was an emotional rollercoaster he was not ready to ride.  Peter was his Spider-Baby, and would always stay that way.

Morgan was sitting looking at all the colors with curiosity stretching her hands out at one of the Spider-Man balloons. "Ba..da..baa", she babbled. "Yeah, that's Bubba.", Tony cooed at her, picking the baby up and walking around. "And you love your brother very much." It was at this time Pepper walked in, gently smiling as she looked around. "You've really outdone yourself.", she complimented. "You haven't even seen the cake yet.", Tony remarked with a smirk. The mother rolled her eyes fondly. Her phone gave a small ding; May texted that she was leaving with the birthday boi.

The two parents smiled at each other. "I've told the others.", Friday informed the Starks. "I'm sure they're bursting with excitement.", Tony remarked.

Sure enough, bursting they were. It didn't take more than ten minutes for all of the Avengers to come down to the floor. Enhanced humans, former assassins and the like set their gifts on the table. Happy had arrived a few minutes later, releasing the excited teenagers to get a look around. The groups of people were about to go hide when the elevator door opened with the sound of a familiar voice.

"Maaaaaayyyyy. Whyyyyyyy?", the now-legal-adult whined. Tony turned around, fast enough to get Peter's wide-eyed initial reaction to the decorated room. "What's...all this?"

"Uh...Surprise?", Tony weakly cheered. Thor blew the party horn in his mouth as loudly as possible, breaking the awkward atmosphere. Peter laughed quietly, quickly escalating. His father joined in, pulling him into a one-armed hug. "So. I heard it was someone's birthday today.", the man sarcastically remarked. "Yeah?", the teen asked, looking around. "Is it Steve's?"

"Oh you little--" Tony moved his hand from the shoulder to the teen's curls, playfully ruffling them. Peter laughed again before swatting the hand away. Stark chuckled, stepping away. "You can ambush him now.", he announced, moving to get the cake. That was all the PPPS needed, as Ned and Flash hoisted him into the air, cheering.

Peter dropped his head with a large grin, seeing MJ with that mischevious smirk he had come to recognize as her sort-of kind smile. "Hey, nerd.", she greeted. "Sup dork.", he responded. They huffed a laugh before Peter was dropped and swarmed by the heroes he had come to know as family. "не так мало паук.", Natasha cooed, pulling him into a hug. "Starkson!", Thor boomed. "Loki and I wish you another year of wellbeing."

Many of the other Avengers basically said the same thing, but there was one that stood out to him. "Happy Birthday, Spider-Man.", as said by Sam. Now, this might not seem out of the ordinary without context, but that was the first time since he revealed his identity to them that Sam actually addressed him as 'Spider-Man'. Which, if Peter was asked to give his opinion on the matter, was huge. It really helped the whole concept of hey. You're an adult now. Congratulations.

When he finally sat at the table, in the chair next to where Morgan was seated, there was a rather large Spider-Man ice cream cake with lit candles set in front of him. May and Ned sat right next to him, with Tony and Pepper on the other side of Morgan. Everyone else sat randomly, still watching Peter with the same enthusiasm the teen himself was feeling.

"Happy Birthday to you~", May started, pulling her nephew in for another tight hug. Words could not describe just how proud of him she was.

"Happy Birthday to you~", the Starks joined in. Well, Tony and Pepper. Morgan just babbled more. Tony made eye contact with Peter, the fondness that he had gained after the first lab time reappearing in his heart. Peter: his protegee, his mentee, his intern, his son. If the ability of time travel was possible, he would go back, b*itch smack his younger self and tell him 'what do you think you're doing, you have a son! Go find him, and watch him grow up, just like a proper dad should.' Just to, in another life, spend a little more time with his child.

"Happy Birthday to Peter~", Ned, MJ, and Flash continued. Ned and Peter had been there for each other since the beginning. All it took was a mention of Legos in an awkward conversation, and the two were set for life. MJ always kept the teen on his feet; she was a whirlwind to be around, and that's what made her so fun. Flash, once they had set aside past incidents, was just a guy. A rather chill one, in fact. The aspect of trying was awkward at first, but he'd made some great strides.

"Happy Birthday to you!!", everyone finished. God, it was daunting what Peter Benjamin Parker's life had become in just a few short years. Yet here he was. About to blow the candles off his eighteenth birthday cake with his aunt, father, mother, little sister, friends, and all the people he had idolized as a child. Grinning ear-to-ear, Peter took an exaggerated huff and blew out his candles.

The room cheered and applauded. May started cutting the cake and serving it, before something else became the object of attention.

"Ba...ba..", Morgan babbled, pointing at Peter. "Yeah?", the teen asked playfully. "Bu...ba..Bu..ba...", the baby repeated, face scrunched up in conversation. Tony just about dropped his plate.

"Buba. Bubba!", Morgan finally figured out, reaching out for Peter. "Bubba." Peter barked out a laugh before picking up his baby sister. "That's right. That's me.", Peter responded, bouncing her a little. "Bubba." "I'm Bubba.", Peter nodded, giving her a kiss on the cheek. "Is that your gift to me?", the teen asked playfully. "Yeah? Thank you."

Pepper took Morgan after she started reaching for her, letting Peter enjoy his cake. With the number of superhumans at the party, it didn't take long for that to finish off. "Well, since we obviously can't beat having your name being said as a first word, second place isn't a bad place to try for.", Flash remarked, picking a random gift off the table and setting it in front of the guest of honor.

The rest of the party was, in Peter's opinion, the best one he's ever had. After gifts, Happy had to take his squad home, so they said their goodbyes. (MJ had given him a kiss on the cheek before leaving, but he would never admit it out of being afraid she would hunt him down.) Afterward, Peter tested out some of his gifts, much to the amusement of some of the heroes. ("Clint, how do I use this?" "WATCH WERE YOU POINT THAT THING! YOU'LL PUT A HOLE IN THE FLOOR!")

The night finally concluded with his family looking at the stars in the sky, Peter taking pictures of constellations he found with his new camera. Tony and May were having a conversation while Pepper was rocking Morgan to sleep.

"...Can I hyphenate my name?", the teen asked out of nowhere. All of his parental figures looked at him, silently asking him to elaborate. "Peter Benjamin Parker-Stark.", he specified, looking down. Tony huffed out a laugh before pulling his son in close. May joined in, nodding profusely. "Of course.", his father answered softly.

"Of course."
