15: I'M SORRY

Adyan slowly dragged his trolley, his face devoid of emotion. The airport was obstreperous, many people squealed, laughter filled everywhere. But Adyan was alone by himself, he dragged his trolley outside and hailed a Taxi, he wanted to be in Abuja for as soon as possible. He had been calling Mom's number but couldn't reach her, he wondered why. And his ego couldn't let him call that brother of his.

He kept looking at the streets of Zaria, hoping he could get a glimpse of her. He just wanted to see her, and that's all he needs. With her thoughts rummaging in his brain, he slept off, as he hadn't being having comfortable sleeps these days.

"Sir, we've arrived at Abuja. Which area would I take you to?" The cab driver asked politely, bowing a little.

Aduna squinted his eyes and rubbed his eyes with his palms. "Take me to Asokoro," he answered with a sleepy-groggy voice.

The car came into a halt in front of their huge ironed gate, he took in a deep breathe, paid the cab driver and entered the house. The house qas creepily silent, he wondered if they were around.

"Assalamu Alaikum," he salaamed as he entered the living room, but no one answered, which made him uneasy.

He flinged his trolley on the floor and began searching the rooms. He first entered Mom's room, but she wasn't there. She wasn't in Dad's room too; he suddenly became tensed. What would've happened to them? Somewhere in his mind urged him to check Kassim's room.

Upon approaching the room, he heard faint voices. He scurriedly entered the room with a salam, as his gaze fell on his sorella. She was sitted beside Dad on the bed, Kassim was sitted on the resting chair opposite them; as they were quietly engrossed in what Dad was telling them.

"Mom!" Adyan exclaimed, moving as fast as he could; until he felt his mother's embrace.

Mom hugged him tight, as tears filled her eyes. She was happy beyond words. She wasn't expecting him today, nor a day close to soon. Being in the warmth of her son; gave her fragile heart a serene feeling. She felt unscathed.

"I wasn't expecting you today. I've missed you," she spoke on his chest, as he was way taller than her.

"Oh Sorella! C'mon, you shouldn't start please," he warned, breaking their hug, as he used his thumbs and cleared her tears.

With a loving smile on her lips, she guided them to where Dad was affectionately looking at them, with a smile on his face. "Welcome back, son," he slurred, the smile not leaving his face.

Adyan slowly leaned in and hugged his Dad. He heaved a sigh he didn't know he had been holding. It was nice being in the warmth of his parents. "Thank you, Dad. How have you been feeling?" Adyan inquired, sitted beside his Dad, as he took his hands in his. He had completely ignored Kassim's presence in the room.

"Can't you see I'm okay? Who would behave cowardly in the presence of a very beautiful and exquisite woman like her? I'm okay son! Can even run a marathon," Dad beamed. Adyan's presence has revived his jovial and bubbly self.

Adyan laughed and looked at his happy Mom, he knew that; upon seeing him, his Dad couldn't help but crack a joke, it's their usual.

"So Mom, is it true? God! Dad you're really lucky to have this damsel. How I wish she would run away, someone will know how it feels to be heartbroken. But it'd be a good sight to behold," Adyan marveled and quickly stood up, dodging the smack Dad sent his way. The whole family broke into a series of laughter, well__except for Kassim, whom was starring at his parents in disbelief, they were distraughted and looking glum some minutes ago. But here they are, laughing hysterically, their faces could show their felicity.

"You need to rest, son. Thanks for coming back, I couldn't remember when last he laughed," Mom spoke with a tone of gratitude.

"These love birds, your thing is unpredictable. In a minute she would say I'm the love of her life, but now__she's clearly telling me she loves him more," Adyan feigned a hurt expression, clutching his heart exaggeratingly.

"Leave. Come here my wife," Dad taunted, as he spread his arms for Mom. Swiftly, she was in his embrace.

"Ohhh...my innocent eyes. I'm out of this room. Enjoy your time, Romeo," Adyan speculated and quickly decamped from the room, with a heartly laugh. Kassim slowly ensued him.

"Huh! It wasn't that bad as expected," Adyan heaved, as he palmed his face. He was soo tired; he doubt if he could walk himself to his room.

"I'm sorry, bro. I should've known my responsibilies since," Kassim confided, scratching his nape; nervously.

"You're sorry? I see," came Adyan's brisk reply, as he made his way to his room.

Kassim grisp his hand and turned him, so he could face him "I'm so sorry, Bro. Don't you love me anymore? I'm going to resign as a civil defence, I'll take care of the company now. Isn't that enough? Want something else from me?" Kassim enunciated, fleetingly smiling at his bamboozled brother.

Without hesitation, Adyan hugged him "I love you so much, bro. Thanks for taking care of them," Adyan spoke, as he broke their hug.

"I'm sorry," Kassim apologised.

"Apology accepted," Adyan marveled, as they entered his room together.

Throughout those weeks, Hayfah seldom talked to Umma nor Amna. She was always with Tahir, as he became her best friend. Fareeha had visited her twice, and was checking on her every day. Malik would come after two days, or he would call her, asking for her wellbeing.

Today was Friday, she finished packing her things, for she would go back to school on Sunday. She was sitted on her bed, playing a game with her phone, when the door creaked ajar; emanating Amna. Hayfah looked up once and yawed her gaze.

Amna trudged to the bed and sat down. She kept fumbling with her fingers nervously. Hayfah looked at her briskly before she became engrossed in her game.

"I'm sorry, please forgive me. I was the reason why you went through series of pains. I know I wasn't a good person towards you. And the guilt kept gnawing at me. Forgive me, Sis," Amna spoke haltingly. She lifted her remorseful eyes and fixed them on humbugged Hayfah's face.

"How would I believe you? How would I know you're truly sorry?" Hayfah asked, she didn't want to be heartbroken. Trusting Amna would be same as trusting a guy in her life. She couldn't want her heart to be broken.

"I'm truly sorry. Please forgive me, Hayfah," Amna lamented.

"It's okay," was all Hayfah's husky voice could utter.

A wide grin broke Amna's lips, as she looked at her sister delightfully. She knew Hayfah was always the chivalrous type, but she didn't expect her forgiveness soon.

"Thank you, Sis," with that, Amna reluctantly leaned in and hugged Hayfah. Her action made Hayfah stiffened in bamboozlement. Is this her haughty sister? Isn't she hallucinating? Ya Rabb! Let this moment stiff. She hadn't being in Amna's embrace for all she could remember.

"It was nice being in your warmth," Hayfah's husky voice slurred, as she broke their hug.

Amna smiled genuinely at her. Taking a glimpse of Hayfah's trolley, she turned and looked at her sister "When are you leaving? I can see you've finished packing," she asked, smiling at her.

"Ohh__I'm leaving on Sunday evening. Have a lecture to attend on Monday morning," Hayfah acknowledged.

Hayfah came out of her room, Amna tailing behind; with Hayfah's trolley in her hand. Fareeha called Hayfah and told her she should get ready, she would be there soon. Fareeha's driver would take them to school.

Hayfah hugged Amna, "I'll surely miss you. Take care of yourself please," Hayfah hushed and broke the hug.

She walked to where Abba stood, flashing her his best smile. He was more than happy when he saw Hayfah and Amna talking and laughing yesterday. He wondered how it all happened.

"Manage with this. Tahir will send more to you in a mean time," Abba spoke, thrusting her a 5000Naira note. She collected the money with a gratuitous smile on her face.

"Thank you so much, Abba. Take your time please," Hayfah said. He patted her head lovingly and smiled.

"To mi yotteke, mi noddi ma (I would call you, when I arrive)," Before Hayfah could close her mouth; both her family burst into a series of laughter.

She gave them a pouted look and spoke "Hamma Tahir, wasn't it correct? Or there was a mistake? Haven't I tried?," she whined, intensely looking at Tahir.

Tahir took her left hand, "You've tried so hard. Infact, it's perfect. Wish you all the best," with that, he took the trolley. Together, they sauntered out of the house. Hayfah had to turned and flashed Amna a triumphant smile. Yes! They made it. She was the one that taught her some fulani sentences.

They met Fareeha by the door waiting for them, she greeted Tahir and they zoomed off.

An argument had been going on in Dad's living room. Adyan and Kassim wanted to go to Zaria, for Kassim's resignation letter. They wanted it to be a surprise to them, that's why they haven't told them the reason behind the trip.

"I will not allow you, and that's final. I might never see him in another five months again. He's too notorious to be trusted,"Mom bellowed, glaring at both of them.

"Look Mom, I promise he'll come back today, not even tomorrow. Please Mom," Adyan pleaded, beckoning Kassim to beg, he knew how adamant she could be.

"Kassim I know you so well, you'll stay behind, and I need both my children with me. So I will not allow you to go," she dictated with a tone of finality, not glancing at them.

"C'mon Sorella," "C'mon Masoyatiy," they both uttered at the same time. Mom didn't know when she started laughing, both her children joining her.

"Hajia, please allow these boys to leave. See how they're calling you sweet names. Don't come and snatch my wife please. You all can leave," Dad spoke, feigning jealousy.

They both looked at their parents, with an ecstatic grin plastered on their lips. "Oh our dear Romeo. She's already ours. Let's not cause your heart to panic; we're leaving. Take care of our Qalb," Adyan spoke and grisp Kassim's hand; before they sprinted out of the living room.

"Have a nice day; Romeo and Juliet," they both yelled at the same time.

The trip was a hushed one, they only talk when it's possible, as Kassim isn't the talking type, especially when he's driving. They first went to Kassim's office, he submitted the resignation letter and drove to ABU. They arrived at ABU around 12:35pm.

Adyan huffed and palmed his face, students were everywhere, the environment was quite obstreperous. "I hate Mondays," he groaned.

"You'll never change. Mondays are always my best," Kassim spoke enragedly, snigering. He halted the car in front of an office, it was his friend's office. He had told him he was in town, so he had no chance but to come and see him.

"Let's go inside," Kassim said, as they came out of the car.

"No. Enter first, I'll stroll a little and come back. I can feel my blood clotted," Adyan replied and started moving towards the direction he saw students trooping out.

"You should just become a medical student, Idiot," Kassim smacked his neck and quickly walked off.

Adyan groaned in irritation. He brought out his phone, and was trying to call Mom; when he bumped into someone.

"I'm sorr," his words became guttural, when his eyes landed on the angel he had being wishing to take a glimpse of.

"Why can't yo..," Hayfah couldn't complete her sentence, as she lifted her eyes, her feisty orbs falling directly into his hazel ones.
