CHAPTER TWO, last day of summer
It was now the last day of summer. Well, it wasn't the day, it was night time. Averi was standing next to Stiles' jeep, standing across from the said boy. Scott sat on top of the hood of the jeep, leaned back on his hands as he looked out at the town of Beacon Hills. Averi was leaning on her crossed arms on the jeep, looking at Stiles as the three teens talked about their plans for college.
Averi hadn't talked to Stiles or Scott about her feelings for Scott. She kept trying to think to herself it was just a heat of the moment thing, but then her feelings for him started to grow. She couldn't help but admire how he looked when he smiled, how his dimples would form and his eyes would light up. Or when he laughed. His laugh was one of her favorite things. Whenever she heard it, it made her smile and her heart would swell. She felt bad for having these feelings for Scott at all, but she couldn't help it.
Averi was snapped out of her thoughts when she heard her boyfriend clear his throat. "Earth to Averi, you still there?" Stiles asked, a teasing tone to his voice.
Averi chuckles and gave him a small nod. "Yes, I'm still here."
"Good," Stiles smiles, reaching out to take her hand. "What were you thinking about?"
"Oh, uh, just thinking about senior year." Averi lied, not wanting to tell him the truth.
"Are you nervous?" Stiles asked, a hint of worry in his tone.
"A little," Averi admits. "But I'm excited too. I can't wait to see what happens."
"Me too," Stiles agrees, a smile on his face. He turns his attention back to his map. "Alright, so I found some cool three bedrooms in the Mission District, but they're pretty expensive." Stiles said, glancing at the map laid on the hood of his jeep in front of him. "A couple in Haight and Ashbury. Also expensive." Despite the fact that Averi and Stiles are a couple, the three best friends have decided on getting an apartment together. They had actually decided that long before Averi and Stiles got together and now Averi couldn't believe how close they were to graduating and sharing an apartment.
"How many do we have left?" Averi questioned.
"Just a few." Stiles replied, flipping to the next page of his map.
Averi furrows her eyebrows, tilting her head to the side. "Is Burkley expensive? I thought a lot of students lived around there." She definitely didn't want to spend much money for college if she didn't have to.
"Yeah, yeah," Stiles nods, glancing at the dark-skinned girl across from him. "We could try Nob Hill, but the jeep would probably burn through a lot of clutches."
Scott looks at Stiles with an amused smile. "You're bringing the jeep?"
"Stiles isn't Stiles without the jeep." Averi joked.
Scott nods in agreement and chuckles lightly. Stiles glances at Scott with a stern expression. "You know the plan, okay. No one gets left behind. That's the plan. Avie is gonna easily get in CalTech." Averi smiles a bit and her heart flutters, appreciating the faith he had in her of getting into her dream college. "Lydia's not gonna have a problem getting into Standford. Kira and Maverick are thinking USF." Averi nods along in agreement, knowing that her brother Maverick and his girlfriend, Kira, were planning to go to college together. "Malia's, uh, gonna, you know, she'll figure something out, okay. The plan's perfect."
"Or we could also wait until we get into college and then figure out where we live." Scott suggested.
"I have a vision, dude." Stiles grumbles. "Okay? And it is a beautiful vision. Don't ruin the vision." Averi giggles and rolls her eyes at how determined he was with this vision of his. "Okay, we can, uh, check out the East Bay." Stiles continues, smiling slightly when he heard Averi's giggle. "Haven't looked at Oakland yet, you know."
"That sounds good." Scott agreed, a thoughtful expression on his face.
Stiles nods and starts writing down some notes. "Oakland. Okay. That's the plan."
Averi's heart skips a beat as she notices the way Scott's looking at her. He smiles and winks. Averi forced a smile and looked away, a blush forming on her cheeks. She tried not to think about the fact that they'll be living together and hoped she'll be able to handle it.
Averi glanced back at Scott and her breath hitches. She feels her heart start to race. His hair is messy, the breeze from the wind messing it up a bit. His shirt is clinging to his muscles, making them look more defined. The moonlight shines on his skin, making him look even more gorgeous. Averi forced herself to look away before she would get caught staring.
Stiles is too caught up in the map and doesn't notice the interaction between the two. Averi is thankful for that. The last thing she wants is for Stiles to find out that she has feelings for his best friend. She doesn't want to hurt him. He's her boyfriend. He deserves better.
He looked at Scott when the brunette-haired boy didn't say anything and noticed the werewolf was looking at the full moon.
Averi notices this and puts a hand on his shoulder to get his attention. He tenses slightly at the sudden touch from her, his heart skipping a beat and he was relieved that she wasn't a werewolf so she couldn't hear his heartbeat. But he then relaxed as he glances at her with a small smile. She looks at him with concern in her eyes, taking her hand off his shoulder. "Scotty, you doing okay? Is the full moon messing with you yet?"
Scott shook his head, shrugging a little bit. "No, I'm okay. "I'm fine." Scott sends her a reassuring smile and she smiles a bit. He shakes his head. "Just thinking."
"About what?" Stiles questioned.
"Senior year." Scott replied. It wasn't really a lie. He was thinking about senior year...But mostly about his growing feelings for Averi. It was hard not to think about it.
"Senior year, come on, that's-that's...That's nothing." Stiles stammers out a sentence, trying his best to assure Scott even though honestly he was nervous about it. "That's going to be easy."
Scott sits up straighter so he's not leaning back on his hands anymore. "It's more like something Deaton told me something once. You ever hear of regression to the mean?"
Averi shakes her head in response while Stiles replies with, "No, I don't think so."
"It was basically his way of saying that life can't ever be all good or all bad. You know, eventually things have to come back to the middle. So, think about the last few months. Things have been good, right? But not amazing." Scott explained.
"Which means that eventually things will get worse." Averi realized with a frown.
"Yeah," Stiles shrugs. "But no one's tried to kill us in six months either."
"And that's pretty amazing to me." Averi chimed in and Stiles pointed at her in a sign of agreement.
"Right." Scott nods, chuckling a bit. "We've been pretty much in the middle for a while." He sighs. "Which means at some point the scale has to tip one way or the other. Things are gonna get really good again..."
"Or really bad." Stiles finished his sentence and just as he said that thunder rumbled in the distance.
Averi brings her attention to the dark sky, watching lightening bolts form in the sky and thunder continuing to rumble. "Knowing us, it's probably gonna be really bad." She frowned.
"Yeah, true." Stiles agrees. He pauses for a few moments before he asks, "Think it's been long enough?
"Yes!" Liam's voice responded before Averi or Scott could. The three teens looked over at the young werewolf chained up to a nearby tree.
Stiles rolls his eyes, setting the pen he held on the hood of his jeep. "Hey. Trying to have an adult conversation over here."
Liam rolls his eyes and it was clear he was annoyed by Stiles. "Alright, you're two years older than me. And I'm fine. Just let me go."
Scott jumps off the jeep, and gets the keys out of his pocket as he, Averi, and Stiles walks over to Liam. Averi stood beside Stiles, who wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Scott stood slightly in front of them, getting ready to unlock the chains from holding Liam to the tree.
"It's not that we don't trust you." Scott started.
"It's that I don't trust you." Stiles admits, earning a slap to the shoulder from Averi and she sent him a 'was that necessary' look. He winces slightly and glances at her with a bit of offense because she hit him. "What? It's the truth."
"But after that last full moon..." Scott continued, using the keys to unlock the chains.
"It was one slip up." Liam protested.
Stiles puts his hands on his hips, glancing at Liam with raised eyebrows. "Slip up? A dozen calls to the Sheriff's Department about a 'monstrous dog-boy running around the streets of Beacon Hills naked.' That's a slip up?"
Scott looks at Liam with furrowed eyebrows. "Why were you naked?"
"I don't wanna know that answer." Averi mumbled, her face contorted to disgust.
"It was really hot that night, okay." Liam defends himself. "Let me go."
Concern fills Scott's gaze. "You sure you're okay?"
"It won't happen again." Liam assured him.
Scott stops untying the chains, staring at Liam. "You're in complete and total control?"
Liam nodded, looking serious, and Scott nodded, letting go the last of the chains and the chains drop into the bag laying on the ground. Stiles picked up the bag while Scott put the keys in his jacket pocket. The three teens walked to Stiles' jeep, neither of them knowing that Liam had used pain to help him be in control.
Averi sat in the back with Liam on the way to pick up Malia. Liam wasn't originally supposed to be with them since they were going to a senior only thing at the school, but they had to keep an eye on Liam since it's a full moon. Averi leaned against the window, scrolling through social media on her phone, but for some reason she kept having trouble with her phone which confused her.
"Is it a party?" Liam questioned curiously.
"It's not a party." Stiles answered.
"Then what's at midnight?" Liam raised his eyebrows.
"Your bedtime." Stiles sassily replied, earning a snicker from Averi and an eye roll from Liam.
"Why aren't the other girls going?" Liam inquired.
"They're meeting us there, okay?" Stiles responds, looking annoyed. "And just stop asking questions, alright? It's a senior thing. You'll know when you're a senior."
Scott had been on his phone during this time, like Averi, and he glances up from it, looking at everyone with confusion. "You guys having trouble with your phones?"
"Yeah, I am." Averi responds. "It's weird." She looked up from her phone when the jeep started slowing down to a stop.
"You run out of gas?" Liam asked him.
"No, it's electrical." Stiles sighs. "Probably the alternator again." He opened his door after unlocking the jeep and closed it after getting out. Averi decided on staying in the jeep with Liam instead of getting out with Scott and Stiles. Stiles opened the hood of the jeep to check what's going on and Scott stood beside him.
Averi stared out the window, finding herself thinking of senior year. She couldn't believe it was already here. Like Stiles had said, she planned on going to CalTech. Her dream college. She always had a knack for working with technology and had one of the highest IQ's in her class. She's around Lydia's IQ level so she figured that she'll be able to get into CalTech with no problem.
"So, are you gonna tell him or what?" Liam questioned, pulling her out of her thoughts.
She looks over at him, furrowing her eyebrows. "Tell who what?"
"C'mon, Averi." Liam chuckles lightly. "It's obvious you like you know who." He gestured with a nod of his head to Scott.
Her face burns at that and her heart races. "I hate you and your werewolf abilities." She grumbles. "Please don't tell Stiles."
Liam chuckles a little, smiling at her with amusement. "Don't worry, I won't." Liam reassured her.
"Thank you." Averi sighs in relief. "It's just so complicated. I don't know what to do." She confessed with a frown.
"You'll figure it out, Aves." Liam reassures her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze. "I know you will."
She lifts her head, her black eyes locking with his brown ones. "I hope so."
She was brought out of her thoughts when she thought she heard a noise behind the jeep, but she just shrugged and thought it was her mind playing tricks. She felt a tap on her shoulder a second later and she turned to face a worried looking Liam.
"Uh, Aves," He says in a shaky voice. "We've got a problem."
"What is it?" She questioned, glancing at him.
"I think we need to get out of here. I saw a lightening bolt hit close to the jeep." Liam explained, pointing at the back window and the two of them looked out at the same time.
Maybe that's what Averi heard before. She shakes her head, not thinking that could be true since she had never seen it happen before and it seemed impossible for that to happen. "Maybe you were seeing things." Her eyes widens and a gasp escaped her lips as she jumped along with Liam, the two teens startled when a lightening bolt struck the road a few feet away from the jeep.
The two teens look at each other with wide eyes. "Nope." Averi said, shaking her head. "We need to get out of here, now."
"I'm with you there." Liam agreed.
Scott, Stiles!" Averi shouts, hoping that the two boys would hurry it up. "Hurry up!" The last thing she wanted to happen was all of them getting struck by lightening.
"Yeah, give us a second, please!" Stiles responded.
"And you guys, stay in the car, okay?" Scott added.
Averi was about to yell at Scott and Stiles again when a lightening bolt struck in front of the jeep this time, hitting the road a few feet away from Scott and Stiles which startled them. Liam leans over to the front of the jeep and turns the keys. The engine starts and he leans out the driver's window to look at Scott and Stiles. "Can we go now?"
Stiles closed the hood of his jeep, then he and Scott got back inside, and off they went to pick up Malia.
****
After picking up Malia, they went to the hospital to drop off Liam since his dad worked there and because of the panicked phone call about the build-up at the hospital Scott got from his mom. Averi walked beside Scott as Liam followed them down the hallway.
"My dad's helping out in surgery." Liam explains. "He's not gonna be done for hours. So I'm either hanging out here or I could still go with you guys..."
Scott presses the down button to the elevator once the three of them got to it. He and Averi turn to face Liam and a small sigh left Averi's lips after seeing his hopeful look. She couldn't say no to that look and she wondered if Scott could. "Show me your hands." Scott demanded in a soft tone but firm tone. Liam frowned, glancing around to make sure no one was paying attention to them, and took his hands out of his pockets. Averi frowned upon seeing Liam's hand were covered in dried blood and healing crescent moon shaped marks from where he digged his fingernails into his palm.
"Liam." Averi frowned at him. She didn't know he was doing this. If she had known, she would've done something to prevent it.
"Okay, so I'm still having trouble." Liam admitted.
"No," Scott shakes his head. "You're still learning. What do you do to stay focused on not changing?"
Liam holds onto his earbuds that were dangling from the front of his shirt and Averi noticed he didn't look happy about it which made her look at him with sympathy. "But it's not working." Liam sighed sadly.
"It's working enough." Scott nods. "Listen, Derek told me that you were one of the strongest that he'd ever seen at your age. Now, coming from him, that means a lot." The elevator dings and Averi and Scott step into it after it opens. "Maybe means things are gonna be harder for you for a while," Scott puts his hand on the door to stop it from closing, staring at Liam with a small smile. "But it also means something else, doesn't it?"
Liam shrugs, looking at him with confusion. "That I'm really strong?"
Scott drops his hand with a smile on his face. "H*ll yeah."
"You don't have to worry so much, Liam." Averi assures him, looking at the young boy with a reassuring smile. "You're gonna be fine." Liam smiles at her and after the door closes, she glances at Scott with worry. "You think that Liam will be fine?"
"Of course." Scott smiles at her and nods. "He's got us to help him." She nodded in response and smiled back at him, turning to face the door. She felt her heartbeat speed up as her hand brushes against his. She looks down at her hand, seeing her fingertips brushing his, and she felt butterflies form in her stomach. She wanted to hold his hand. Her hand twitches slightly, itching to hold his, but she refrains herself from doing so.
Scott notices this and decides to make the first move. He takes her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers, and Averi looks up at him, her brown eyes locking with his honey ones.
She hesitated. She didn't want to pull away and she hated it. She should be holding her boyfriend's hand and not Scott's. She's with Stiles, and she was trying to convince herself that she still loved him and she did.
"We cant." She finally said, her voice shaky but she didn't pull her hand away.
"I'm not letting go." Scott argued, giving her hand a squeeze.
"But... Sti-"
"He's my best friend and I know how much you love him." Scott says. "But I also have feelings for you. And I know you have feelings for me."
"I don't." She lied, pulling her hand away from him finally. "We shouldn't be doing this, Scott. I have a boyfriend and I'm not breaking his heart." She frowns. "I don't wanna hurt you either but I'm not ready to let go of Stiles."
Scott sighs and nods. "I'm not asking you to let go of Stiles. I'm not asking for us to get together either. All I'm saying is that I'm not going to stop having feelings for you, Averi."
"But we can't be together." Averi shook her head.
"Maybe one day." Scott suggested, his eyes soft as he looked at her.
Averi couldn't help but agree with that. "Yeah, maybe." She sighed. She realized their hands were still intertwined. She didn't want to pull away this time and neither did he. So, their hands stayed like that. She hated how their hands fit perfectly. It was almost as if their hands were made to be intertwined.
"What are we doing?" Averi questioned quietly.
"I don't know." Scott whispers. "All I know is that I like you and I don't want to stop being friends with you because of the feelings I have for you."
Averi was silent for a minute, contemplating what he had said. He was right. She didn't want to lose him because of the feelings they had for each other. She didn't want him out of her life. But at the same time, she didn't want to hurt Stiles. She loved him, she really did, but there was something about Scott that just made her feel... whole. She didn't understand why she felt that way but she did. And she had a feeling he felt the same way.
"I don't want to lose you, either." She finally spoke.
"So, what are we going to do?" Scott asked, his brown eyes gazing into hers.
"I don't know." Averi replied, a hint of sadness in her voice.
"Averi," Scott began, his tone serious. "I will not let anything happen to you. You know that, right?"
"I know." Averi nods, a smile forming on her lips. "And I will not let anything happen to you either, Scott."
Scott smiled, squeezing her hand. "We'll figure it out."
Averi nodded, squeezing his hand in return. "I know we will."
The elevator doors opened and they both dropped their hands and walked out, the air between them tense, but Averi knew they would figure things out.
When they got back to the main floor of the hospital where Stiles and Malia were waiting for them. Averi noticed the lights flashing on and off, but she figured that it was because of the storm. Scott glances at Averi with furrowed eyebrows when a few minutes later he didn't get a response from the Korean girl. "Still can't reach Kira. You?"
Averi stares at the messages she had with Kira on her phone, frowning upon not seeing a reply. "No. The last that I heard from her is that she would be late because she was stuck in traffic."
"Guys," Stiles speaks to the couple once they got to him and Malia. "Look who finally showed up!" He joked, gesturing to an African-American boy who turned around to look at Averi and Scott.
The African-American teen smiles at Averi. "Hey, sis."
Averi's eyes widen and she gasps, her eyes lighting up. An excited smile tugs on her lips. "Maverick!" She rushes over to the boy and immediately wraps her arms around him in a hug. Maverick laughs, amused by his little sister's excitement, but he wraps his arm around her to hug her back. "I missed you." Averi mumbled, holding onto her brother tightly.
"I missed you too, lil sis." Maverick smiled. He had went to France during the summer to visit some family and because he had took a summer study abroad class since he knew it would look good on college applications and he wanted to learn and see new things in a different country. Plus he was able to reconnect with Isaac Lahey who is a good friend of his.
"You're only older than me by a few months." Averi pointed out.
"And I'll never let you forget it." Maverick grinned and Averi rolled her eyes playfully while she chuckled.
"So, when did you get back?" Averi asked her brother once they pulled away from the hug.
"I got back a few days ago." Maverick answered, a grin plastered on his face.
"Well, it's good to see you back." Averi smiles at him.
"Likewise, sis." Maverick nodded.
Averi looks at him hopefully. "You haven't happened to hear from Kira, have you?"
At the mention of not hearing from his girlfriend, Maverick frowns and his shoulders drop in defeat. "No. I haven't heard from her either in awhile now that I think about it."
"Okay," Stiles glances at everyone with raised eyebrows. "One of us reminded her about tonight, right?"
"I'm pretty sure I did." Maverick nods, biting his lower lip nervously. "But we've only texted once this week and that was because I told her I just got back home."
"Wait, only once?" Averi looked at him with surprise. She figured they would text or call more than that.
"How did you guys leave things when you both went your separate ways for the summer?" Stiles asked Maverick.
"Things were good." Maverick smiles at the memory of his and Kira's last date before they left for their summer vacations. They've been together for about a year now and they're relationship has been really good. They made each other happy and despite Maverick being human and Kira being supernatural that didn't change a thing between them. "So, uh, I just said 'Don't worry about anything, just go and have fun.'"
Averi cringes and shakes her head. "Oh, Mav."
Maverick's smile disappears and a look of confusion forms on his face. "What? What's wrong?"
"No." Stiles groans. "You told her to go and have fun?"
Maverick tilts his head to the side, not understanding the point of this yet. "What's wrong with that?"
"Nothing." Stiles presses his lips together. "Nothing's wrong with it. Just, I don't know. That can be interoperated in a lot of different ways."
"What do you mean?" Maverick questioned, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Well, like, 'Don't worry, we're not exclusive. Go have fun with other guys.'" Stiles explained.
A look of panic forms on Maverick's face and he glances at his friends. "What? No. People think that's what that means?"
"I'm sure that some think that way." Stiles shrugs. "I mean," He glances at Averi curiously. "If I told you 'Don't worry, go have fun.' and you were going away, what you would think I meant?"
Averi opens her mouth to reply, but Malia beats her to it. "Fun like bowling? Or fun like having sex with other guys."
Maverick's face falls and he immediately gets his phone out of his pocket. "Thanks for bringing my mood down." He sarcastically commented, beginning to text Kira.
"If it helps, I wouldn't think that. I would just think it meant what you said and nothing else." Averi admitted as she looked at Stiles, smiling at him and her heart fluttered when he smiled back at her. She blushed as he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her close to him.
"I would think the same." Stiles nodded in agreement, grinning at the Korean girl.
Maverick's gaze snaps towards them. "I'm standing right here, you know."
"Right." Averi chuckled.
"Sorry." Stiles said.
Maverick goes back to his phone, frowning when he sees that his text message didn't go through.Maverick smiles a bit. "That does help me a little bit," He frowns again. "But I'm still worried." He furrows his eyebrows when he the text he thought he sent Kira wouldn't go through. "For some reason this isn't working."
Averi pat his shoulders, sympathetically smiling at him. "Sorry, bro. It won't work. All phones seem to not be working because of the storm."
Maverick groans, leaning his head back and shoves his phone back into the pocket of his hoodie he wore. "Just great." He mumbled in a frustrated tone.
The attention of the five teens was brought to nurses pulling a 25-year old man on a gurney pass them. It looked like he had been in a car crash and it was obvious he was in pain, but Melissa was comforting him. "Hey, mom." Scott gets his mom's attention and she stops following the nurses and to look at him. "Where's all this coming from?"
"A jackknifed tractor-trailer on 115, caused a major pile up." Melissa answered before she followed the nurses pushing the bed and everyone looked at each other with frowns. They all knew that 115 was the only way from the airport to Beacon Hills.
"I can get her." Maverick speaks confidently after a moment of silence. He starts walking towards the exit, turning around so he faces his sister and friends as he walks backwards. "You guys can head to the school. We'll meet you by midnight."
Averi wasn't for sure if she was a fan of him going out during the thunderstorm on his motorcycle, but she trusted him that he would be fine. "Wait, but Mav, how on Earth are you gonna get to her?" She frowns, her worried gaze meeting his confident one. "I bet you she's in the middle of a traffic jam."
Maverick smirks, getting out the keys to his motorcycle from his hoodie pocket. "We'll make it, just trust me."
