CHAPTER THREE, familiar face
Driving in the pouring rain isn't Maverick's favorite thing to do, but he would do it if it meant he would get to see Kira. He hasn't seen her all summer and he had been dying to see her, to hold her, and to kiss her. He drove between the parked cars in the traffic jam on highway 115, looking around for the car he knew Kira would be in. A smile made its way to his face when he saw Kira standing beside a car he assumed was her parents. He parked his motorcycle a few feet away from the car and Kira smiled widely when she saw Maverick. The two teens ran at each other, meeting each other in the middle.
"Did you have fun in New York?" Was the first thing that Maverick asked her and to say he was nervous for her answer was an understatement.
Kira laughs a bit and shakes her head. "Not really." A sigh of relief leaves Maverick's lips. "Did you have fun in France?"
Maverick grins at her as he replies with, "Not really." They both leaned forward, closing their eyes. Maverick cupped the sides of her face and Kira wrapped her arms around his neck while they kissed. They didn't care that they were drenched because of the pouring rain and that people in the cars were possibly watching them. For a moment, it was just them and no one else.

Averi went to the McCall house with Scott afterwards since she forgot her jacket there since they hung out together earlier that day. She knew she would need it that night because of the storm going on. After Averi would get her jacket, then they planned on leaving to head to the school for the Senior Scribe. The Senior Scribe is where you write your initials on a library shelf. Every student at Beacon Hills did it once they were seniors and they were both looking forward to it.
When they were getting ready to leave, Averi notices something strange on the floor so she bent down to get a closer look at it. "Scott." She got the brunette-haired boy's attention and he glanced at her with raised eyebrows. Averi stood up with the paper now in her hand and showed it to Scott. Scott sets his helmet and the extra one he got for Averi on the table, furrowing his eyebrows when he looked at the note. It was the note that he left for his mom that he would be back by 1:30, but the note was on the floor instead of where he put it on the fridge, and it looked like there were holes in it. As if someone stabbed something sharp in the paper.
"Something did this." Averi mumbled.
"But what would that be?" Scott asked curiously.
Averi shrugs. "Maybe some sort of werecreature?" She sighs and Scott nods as he thinks of what could've done it. "Let's just hope your mom wasn't home when that creature showed up here." She mumbled. She then immediately looked to the front of the fridge with wide eyes while Scott looked over there with confusion when the magnets fell off the front of the fridge and clattered when they hit the floor.
Averi was almost afraid to ask, but she still does, "How did that happen?"
"No idea." Scott replied, slowly walking over to the fridge.
Averi hesitantly followed him. Averi instinctively moved closer to him, feeling safer when she was right by him. Scott bent down to pick up one of the magnets and stood up, putting the magnet on the fridge. He exchanged a confused look with Averi when the magnet didn't stick and instead fell.
Scott glanced over to his left, tilting his head to the side and furrowing his eyebrows with confusion when he noticed the hour hand on the clock was going haywire. Averi followed his line of sight and a confused look formed on her face when she saw what was happening with the clock. Averi and Scott jumped, startled when they heard a loud noise from the magnets. When they looked over as they heard the loud noise, they were surprised to see the magnets had lifted into the air and were now stuck on the fridge.
Averi and Scott glance at each other, neither one having any clue as to what was going on. "Did you do that?" Scott asked her because she has air manipulation powers and her making the magnets fall and rise up was the only explanation he could think of.
Averi shakes her head. "No, I didn't." She bites her lower lip, her nerves and fear growing by the second. "But I wish I did 'cause I know something scary must be doing this."
When the house began to shake, her eyes widened and her heartbeat increased. Scott's heartbeat was beating rapidly as he glanced around with confusion. He wrapped his arms around Averi protectively, his heart skipping a beat when Averi wrapped her arms around him. Averi wrapped her arm around his waist, glancing around with a nervous expression as she and Scott stood their ground although nothing but a bowl close to the edge of the counter fell during the shaking of the house.
They both breathe heavily, looking at each other with wide eyes after the house finally stopped shaking. They were both equally afraid and confused as to what was happening because something like that has never happened before. Upon hearing a beeping noise, the couple glanced over at the microwave and the teens tilted their head to the side with a confused look on their face. The constant beeping noise for sure did not help calm Averi's or Scott's nerves and it only made their heart race more.
****
Averi and Scott had no clue to explain what happened at his house. The beeping from the microwave stopped after a while and when nothing else happened, they decided to leave immediately. They were now running underneath a covered area in front of the school which allowed them to get dry from being wet because of the rain. Averi had to admit getting a break from being out in the rain was nice. She hated how her clothes stuck to her skin because of the rain and how cold she was.
"Wait," Worry etches on Averi's face as she glances at him after not seeing their friends nearby. "We're not late, are we?"
"No, they're on their way." Scott reassured her.
The two teens were on high alert when suddenly a low growl was heard. Averi and Scott turned around, their eyes widening when they see a guy standing in front of the steps, staring menacingly at them. Scott was quick to push Averi behind him when the guy walked towards them, showing that he had claws extended. Scott knew Averi was more than capable of protecting herself, especially with her air manipulation powers and martial arts expertise, but he just couldn't help but instinctively protect her.

At the school, seniors were rushing to get inside to get away from the rain, but Maverick, Kira, Malia, and Stiles were walking underneath a covering, waiting for the rest of their friends to show up. "Nothing from Averi or Scott." Malia spoke, glancing up from her phone she held.
"And nothing from Lydia either." Stiles said, biting his lower lip. He was worried about his girlfriend and friends. He hoped that they would make it in time and that they were okay.
Malia frowns. "And I still don't know if I passed." She glances around at all the seniors going into the school with a sad expression on her face. "I don't want to do this unless I'm actually a senior."
"Don't worry, Mal." Maverick speaks up, smiling encouragingly at Malia. "I'm sure you'll pass."
"Yeah, you'll get in." Kira chimed in, sending a smile to Malia. Malia smiled back at Maverick and Kira, appreciating their words.
Malia furrows her eyebrows, glancing at Stiles with confusion. "What's wrong with you? You smell terrible."
"Knowing Stiles, he's probably anxious." Maverick commented, glancing at Stiles with raised eyebrows.
Stiles points at him and nods. "He's right." He glances at Malia, crossing his arms. "You should be familiar with the smell of anxiety by now since it's pretty much a constant state for me."
"Why's this so important to you?" Malia questioned.
"It's not." Stiles denied.
Kira shakes her head. "It's obvious it is."
Stiles sighs. "I don't know. Maybe it is, uh...I asked my dad the other day about his high school friends. Guess how many he still talks to? None. Not a single one. You know, these were his best friends and he just says he lost touch with them, you know. So I started thinking about things, like I always do."
Malia nods. "Obsessively."
"Very obsessively." Maverick added.
"Yeah. And so I'm thinking, what if..." Stiles frowns. "What if Scott is my best friend now, you know, but what if they aren't my best friends for life? And-And what if Averi and I break up and we can't even stand to be in the same room?"
"But that does happen sometimes." Kira said with a shrug. She sends him a reassuring smile to try and calm his nerves. "I mean, sometimes people drift apart after high school. Even if you and Averi break up, I don't think you guys would stop being best friends."
"Yeah, if that did happen I hope that we would remain best friends." Stiles admits. If he ever broke up with Averi, he couldn't imagine his life without her so he hoped if that ever happened they would still be best friends. He sighs. "But we only drift apart because we let it happen. You know, that's what I'm saying. If I already found the best people in my life, why aren't I not trying to stay with them, you know?"
"Wasn't that the plan?" Maverick asked, smiling a bit.
"Yeah, the dream." Malia nodded, raising her arms.
Stiles points at her. "The vision. And don't mock the vision."
"Well, I'm a fan of it especially if you're friends are in it." Kira smiled.
Stiles glances at the four teens by him with a smile. "Of course you guys are." His smile widens upon thinking of Averi, his face turning red. "Especially Averi."
"Wait," Maverick said when he realized something, furrowing his eyebrows. "The reason why you wanted your friends to be here because you didn't want to lose them all after senior year."
A sheepish expression forms on Stiles face and he nods. "And I hope they don't want to lose you either."
"Awe, that's sweet." Kira comments. "Of course we wouldn't want to lose you." The four teens smiled at each other.
Stiles glances at Malia since she had been quiet for a few seconds and she looked confused. "Mal?" He asked.
"Someone's coming. Someone fast." Malia replied. She turned around just as a person ran up to the four teens and she pushed the person to the ground. Maverick, Kira, and Stiles watched her with wide eyes, but they were relieved upon seeing it was only Liam who had ran up to them. Liam groaned in pain when he hit the ground.
"Wait, Mal, it's just Liam." Maverick assured her and Malia took her hand away from Liam and stood up when Maverick said that.
"Scott and Averi are in trouble." Liam worriedly said, causing the group to share a worried look.
****
Scott groaned in pain as he was thrown to the ground. The werecreature growled when he was pushed back by a wave of water Averi created with her air manipulation powers. Now he was soaking wet which seemed to make him even more mad. Just as Averi was about to hit the werecreature again, she was thrown to the ground. She winced in pain and Scott glanced over at her worriedly.
The werecreature stands in front of Scott, looking down at him. "True Alpha?" He tilts his head to the side. "Where's your power, Scott?"
Scott gets up, kneeling with his claws extended as he glares at the werecreature. "Who are you?"
"A devoted fan." The werecreature replied.
"Some fan you are." Averi grumbles. "Fans normally wouldn't act this way to someone they like."
The werecreature ignores her comment and continues. "Show me the man who took down Deucalion and broke the Argents. I came for that Alpha. Come on!" He shouted threateningly.
Scott growls and stands, cutting the werecreature's face with his claws. The fight continued between them while Averi stood up, watching worriedly and trying to think of a way she could intervene. She gasped when the man grabbed Scott by the throat, pushing him up against the wall before he dropped Scott.
Averi then used her air manipulation to throw the werecreature against the wall, staring at him with a glare as he fell to the ground, groaning in pain. But he wasn't on the ground too long since then he was up, towering over her with a fierce look in her eyes. "Probably shouldn't have done that." Averi muttered under her breath.
"Nice try, little fairy." He said threatingly. Averi yelped in pain when the man cut her arm with his claws.
"Averi!" Scott exclaimed worriedly.
The werecreature turns back to Scott with a snarl. "And I didn't come just to claim your status." He raised his right hand, his claws extended but this time they glowed a bright blue. Averi's eyes widened and she shared a worried yet confused look with Scott.
Averi gasped as a person jumped down from the ceiling. He growled and ran at the man. He jumped off the wall, slashing the man's face. He continued to fight with him which gave Averi and Scott enough time to get up, but they didn't get up completely since they were still weak from the fight. Averi watched worriedly when the boy was thrown to the ground. Her eyes widened in realization as she realized who he was.
"Theo?" She whispered with surprise.
The werecreature turned back to Scott and went to swing at him, but Scott quickly ducked and slid away from him. He continued to back away and ducked each hit. Averi turned her attention back to Scott when she heard him gasp. Her eyes widened and a gasp left her lips at seeing the man had grabbed Scott's throat again and used his other hand to stick his claws in his chest. Scott struggled to breathe, gasping for air as he was brought to his knees.
By this point, Stiles, Malia, and Liam finally got to the area the fight was happening. They stopped by the entrance of the covering, staring in shock. Liam immediately turned to his wolf side, snarling. Averi and Theo got back up to their feet, ready to fight even if they were weak. Then suddenly Scott grabbed the man's wrist, staring at him with a glare and a low growl left his lips. He then pushed through the pain and stood. A sickening crack could be heard as Scott twisted the man's arm, causing the man to roar in pain. The man's grip on Scott was gone, he was holding onto his arm in pain.
Scott grabbed the claws that were still stuck to his chest and threw them to the side. "I don't know who you are or what you thought you were going to do, but I'll give you a choice. You can stay and I'll break something else. Or you can run."
"I'd run." Stiles remarked.
And that's what he did. The man got up and ran. Averi and Scott met the others half way as they walked over to them under the covering. "Are you okay?" Stiles asks Averi with concern, wrapping his arm around her waist to pull her to his side. His eyes widen when he noticed the cuts on her arm. "Babe, you're hurt."
"I'm fine." She reassures him and wraps her uninjured arm around his waist. "They'll heal." Stiles nodded hesitantly, still concerned for her but didn't say anything else about it.
The group turns to look at Theo, who walks over to the group with a smile. "You don't remember me, do you?" He glances at Averi with a smile. "Well, besides Averi. I know she remembered me." He shrugs. "I guess I look a little different since the fourth grade."
"Theo?" Scott said with surprise and Theo smirked.
Malia glances at Scott with confusion. "You know him?"
"They used to." Theo nods. "Trust me, I never thought I'd see you guys again. Couple months ago, I heard of an Alpha in Beacon Hills. When I found out his name was Scott McCall, just couldn't believe it. Not just an Alpha, but a True Alpha."
Scott looks like he's still not used to that title as he nods. "What do you want?"
"I came back to Beacon Hills." Theo smiles. "Back home with my family. Because I want to be a part of your pack."
****
Averi walked beside Scott and Stiles into the school, her hand intertwined with Stiles. The cuts on her arm has now began to heal. She was so thankful one of her powers was healing powers.
"We haven't seen this kid in years." Stiles points out. "You don't find that highly suspicious?"
"Maybe a little." Averi nodded in agreement.
"I'm kind of more concerned about the guy who just tried to kill me." Scott admitted.
"That's a good point." Averi commented.
The group stops in the hallway, turning to face Malia when she checked her phone after it buzzed. Malia's eyes widen and she smiles widely. "I'm in."
"You got in?" Averi grins. "Mal, you did it!"
"I passed." Malia said with confusion and surprise. "I'm officially a senior. "
Averi pulls her in for a hug. "So happy for you." Malia grinned and hugged her back.
"Thank God." Lydia said as she walks over to the group, looking annoyed, and behind her were Maverick and Kira. "Where have you guys been? The whole senior class is here." She smiles, raising her eyebrows. "Are we doing this or not?"
"Well, duh." Averi replied in a duh tone, smiling at Lydia.
The group share a smile with each other as they began to walk down the hallway to the library.
****
Soon it was turn for the group to write their initials on the bookshelf. Stiles was up first and then Averi was up next. She smiled slightly when she noticed Derek's initials signed on the book shelf. She handed the marker to Lydia, sharing a smile with her after she wrote her initials next to Stiles'. She then joined Stiles by the railing, smiling softly as he wrapped his arm around her to pull her close and kissed the side of her head.
"This isn't vandaliam, is it?" Kira nervously asked when it was her turn.
"Not technically." Lydia replied.
"It's fine, babe." Maverick reassured Kira with a smile. Kira smiled nervously and wrote her initials by Lydia's. She then gave the marker to Maverick, who wrote his initials by hers. Wrapping an arm around her shoulders, Maverick then walked over to the others with Kira to stand by the railing while they waited for their friends.
Averi noticed Malia paused for a moment as she decided what initial to write. She knew it must be hard for her to decide whether she should put Tate or Hale for her last name. She exchanged a smile with Malia when Malia stood by her right side. Scott was the last one of the friend group to go, writing his initials by Stiles' and Averi's. He paused afterwards, mentally debating on what he wanted to do. With a heavy heart, he then added Allison's initials by his.
Averi smiled softly after seeing Allison's initials. When Scott stood by his friends, he locked eyes with Averi, who sent him a soft smile and he returned the smile. "She would have been with us." Stiles spoke, glancing at Scott with a reassuring smile.
"Yeah." Scott agreed.
Lydia smiles. "She still is."
A/N i loved it so much when scott added allison's initials to the shelf, it was such a bittersweet moment
