CHAPTER FOUR, senior scribe
Averi went to the McCall house with Scott afterwards since she forgot her jacket there since they hung out together earlier that day. She knew she would need it that night because of the storm going on. After Averi would get her jacket, then they planned on leaving to head to the school for the Senior Scribe. The Senior Scribe is where you write your initials on a library shelf. Every student at Beacon Hills did it once they were seniors and they were both looking forward to it.
When they were getting ready to leave, Averi notices something strange on the floor so she bent down to get a closer look at it. "Scott." She got the brunette-haired boy's attention and he glanced at her with raised eyebrows. Averi stood up with the paper now in her hand and showed it to Scott. Scott sets his helmet and the extra one he got for Averi on the table, furrowing his eyebrows when he looked at the note. It was the note that he left for his mom that he would be back by 1:30, but the note was on the floor instead of where he put it on the fridge, and it looked like there were holes in it. As if someone stabbed something sharp in the paper.
"Something did this." Averi mumbled.
"But what would that be?" Scott asked curiously.
Averi shrugs. "Maybe some sort of werecreature?" She sighs and Scott nods as he thinks of what could've done it. "Let's just hope your mom wasn't home when that creature showed up here." She mumbled. She then immediately looked to the front of the fridge with wide eyes while Scott looked over there with confusion when the magnets fell off the front of the fridge and clattered when they hit the floor.
Averi was almost afraid to ask, but she still does, "How did that happen?"
"No idea." Scott replied, slowly walking over to the fridge as he stared at it with confusion.
Averi hesitantly followed him. Averi instinctively moved closer to him, feeling safer when she was right by him. Scott bent down to pick up one of the magnets and stood up, putting the magnet on the fridge. He exchanged a confused look with Averi when the magnet didn't stick and instead fell.
Scott glanced over to his left, tilting his head to the side and furrowing his eyebrows with confusion when he noticed the hour hand on the clock was going haywire. Averi followed his line of sight and a confused look formed on her face when she saw what was happening with the clock. Averi and Scott jumped, startled when they heard a loud noise from the magnets. When they looked over as they heard the loud noise, they were surprised to see the magnets had lifted into the air and were now stuck on the fridge.
Averi and Scott glance at each other, neither one having any clue as to what was going on. "Did you do that?" Scott asked her because one of the couple powers she had were air manipulation powers and her making the magnets fall and rise up was the only explanation he could think of.
Averi shakes her head. "No, I didn't." She bites her lower lip, her nerves and fear growing by the second. "But I wish I did 'cause I know that means it was something else did it."
When the house began to shake, her eyes widened and her heartbeat increased. Scott's heartbeat was beating rapidly as he glanced around with confusion. He wrapped his arms around Averi protectively, his heart skipping a beat when Averi wrapped her arms around him. Averi wrapped her arm around his waist, glancing around with a nervous expression as she and Scott stood their ground although nothing but a bowl close to the edge of the counter fell during the shaking of the house.
"What the heck is happening?" Averi muttered, her eyes wide as she looked around the house.
"I don't know, but I don't like it." Scott replied, his gaze not leaving the area around them, watching with surprise.
They both jumped again when a lightbulb exploded and shattered into pieces. He turned and without a second thought, he covered her with his body as the glass shards from the lightbulb fell. Averi hid her face in the crook of his neck, closing her eyes tightly. She felt safe in his arms, even though there was a possibility they could be attacked at any moment.
"You okay?" Scott whispered, rubbing her back soothingly. He had to admit he was scared too, but he wanted to make sure Averi was okay. He knew she was scared as well and he wanted to be strong for her.
Averi opens her eyes and nods, moving her head so she was no longer hiding her face. "Yeah." She whispered, her eyes meeting his. Scott gently moved a piece of her black hair out of her face and tucked it behind her ear. Averi smiled softly at him, her heart racing. He returned the smile and they gazed into each other's eyes.
"We should probably get out of here." Scott spoke softly, breaking the silence between them and Averi nodded in agreement.
****
Averi and Scott had no clue to explain what happened at his house. The beeping from the microwave stopped after a while and when nothing else happened, they decided to leave immediately. They were now running underneath a covered area in front of the school which allowed them to get dry from being wet because of the rain. Averi had to admit getting a break from being out in the rain was nice. She hated how her clothes stuck to her skin because of the rain and how cold she was.
"Wait," Worry etches on Averi 's face as she glances at him after not seeing their friends nearby. "We're not late, are we?"
"No, they're on their way." Scott reassures her. They stood there in silence, looking around at the dark night and listening to the rain patter. "It's a pretty crazy night, huh?" Scott asked, glancing out at the dark night and listening to the rain fall.
Averi nods. "Yeah. I mean, it was already bad with the storm and all." She sighed, fidgeting with her hands. She hated thunderstorms and so it didn't help there was one happening right now.
Scott's face softens when he noticed her nervous expression and he moves a bit closer to her. "Hey, Aves, it's gonna be okay. I promise."
Averi glances up at him, biting her lower lip nervously. "But you don't know that. This thing that's happening at your house could lead to something terrible and knowing us it probably is-"
"Shh." Scott whispers, cutting her off and he pulls her in for a hug. "Don't think about it. Okay?" He says softly. "Just relax. Everything's gonna be fine." He whispered as he ran his fingers through her hair, knowing that helped calm her down. He also knew when she rambled that meant she was nervous or anxious and he wanted to calm her down before that could get worse.
Averi closed her eyes, inhaling the familiar scent of him and wrapping her arms around his waist as she rested her head on his chest. Scott continued running his fingers through her hair as he held her close.
"We'll figure it out. We always do." Scott mumbled, pressing his lips against the top of her head and resting his chin on her head. He was relieved when her body relaxed as she leaned against him. "We're gonna be okay."
Averi smiles a little and opens her eyes, her black eyes meeting his brown ones. "How do you always know how to calm me down?" She whispered. She didn't know how he always managed to calm her down so easily. Maybe it was because he was so sweet or he just had a calming effect on her. Either way, she was thankful for him.
Scott shrugs and smiles at her. "Well, we've known each other our whole lives so I guess that's why. I know you well enough to know what calms you down." He whispered, gazing into her eyes. Averi smiled softly and laid her head back on his chest. It was hard to keep her heart not beating fast when she was this close to him. Scott held her closer and rubbed her back soothingly.
He didn't want to let her go, not when he had her in his arms. He felt more relaxed when she was by his side and he always enjoyed holding her close. His growing feelings for her were hard to ignore, especially when he held her like this. All he wanted to do was to take her in his arms and kiss her. But he couldn't. She was dating his best friend. Even though he wished she was his, she wasn't and he had to accept that. Though it was so hard for him to when he knew a part of his heart would always belong to her.
Their quiet and peaceful moment was ruined when a growl came from nearby. They pull apart, Scott pushing her behind him protectively as a dark figure ran towards them. Averi couldn't help the small gasp that escaped her lips as she saw it was a some kind of werecreature. She couldn't tell what kind though because everything happened so fast, but she didn't want to figure it out. Scott knew Averi was more than capable of protecting herself, especially with her air manipulation powers and martial arts expertise, but he just couldn't help but instinctively protect her.
"Get back." Scott growled, his fangs bared and his red alpha eyes glowing as the werecreature continued running towards them. The werecreature stopped in front of them, its eyes glowing blue. Scott let out a low growl, his gaze not leaving the werecreature in front of them.
****
Scott groaned in pain as he was thrown to the ground. The werecreature growled when he was pushed back by a wave of water Averi created with her air manipulation powers. Now he was soaking wet which seemed to make him even more mad. Just as Averi was about to hit the werecreature again, she was thrown to the ground. She winced in pain and Scott glanced over at her worriedly.
"Are you okay?" He asked her, but before she could answer, the werecreature knocked Scott against the wall.
Scott let out a groan of pain and he dropped to the ground. The werecreature then turned his attention to Averi and he lunged for her.
"Averi!" Scott exclaimed worriedly, his eyes widening.
Averi held her hand up, causing a strong wind to come. It blew the werecreature back and he was thrown through the window.
The werecreature stands in front of Scott, looking down at him. "True Alpha?" He tilts his head to the side. "Where's your power, Scott?"
Scott gets up, kneeling with his claws extended. He glares at the werecreature. "Who are you?"
"A devoted fan." The werecreature replied.
"Some fan you are." Averi grumbles. "Fans normally wouldn't act this way to someone they like."
The werecreature ignores her comment and continues. "Show me the man who took down Deucalion and broke the Argents. I came for that Alpha. Come on!" He shouted threateningly.
Scott growls and stands, cutting the werecreature's face with his claws. The fight continued between them while Averi stood up, watching worriedly and trying to think of a way she could intervene. She gasped when the man grabbed Scott by the throat, pushing him up against the wall before he dropped Scott.
Averi then used her air manipulation to throw the werecreature against the wall, staring at him with a glare as he fell to the ground, groaning in pain. But he wasn't on the ground too long since then he was up, towering over her with a fierce look in her eyes. "Probably shouldn't have done that." Averi muttered under her breath.
"Nice try, little fairy." He said threatingly. Averi yelped in pain when the man cut her arm with his claws.
"Leave her alone!" Scott shouted angrily. He was about to attack, but the werecreature stopped him.
The werecreature stops, turning to face him with a raised eyebrow. "Or what? What are you gonna do?" He chuckles darkly, his gaze still on Averi. The werecreature turns back to Scott with a snarl. "And I didn't come just to claim your status." He raises his right hand, his claws extended but this time they glowed a bright blue. Averi's eyes widen and she shares a worried yet confused look with Scott. "I came for you."
"Me?" Averi asked, staring at him with disbelief. Why would this werecreature want her?
The werecreature smirks at her. "Yes, little fairy. And Scott, of course."
"What do you want from us?" Scott demanded, a serious tone lacing his voice.
"The only thing an Alpha's True Mate could give." The werecreature answered, smirking as he spoke.
"Mate?" Averi and Scott both exclaimed with wide eyes, their faces turning red.
Averi stares at the man in front of her with disbelief. "W-We're not mates!" She stuttered, her heart racing like crazy. She couldn't believe this creature thought she and Scott were mates. And she hated how butterflies swarmed in her stomach at the idea.
"Yeah, she has a boyfriend, who's not me. We're not dating." Scott added, trying not to show his disappointment when he said that.
The werecreature's smirk grew bigger and his eyes glowed brighter. "Not yet. You'll find out the truth soon enough."
Before they could say anything else, the werecreature attacked them and then Scott was thrown backwards, landing hard on the ground.
"Scott!" Averi cried, trying to help him up, but she was pushed away and was thrown against the wall. She let out a whimper and slid down the wall, closing her eyes and holding her head as it throbbed with pain.
"Averi, are you okay?" Scott asked her, his voice laced with concern.
Averi opens her eyes and saw Scott standing over her with worry etched on his face. She nods her head, ignoring the pain. "Y-Yeah. I'm fine." She mumbled. She lied, of course, because she wasn't fine, but she didn't want to worry him. Her whole body ached after getting thrown against the wall, especially her head. But she was able to stand up.
The werecreature came running towards them and Scott stood in front of Averi protectively, holding his hands out to stop him from hurting her as he stood in a defensive stance. Averi gasped as suddenly aperson jumped down from the ceiling. He growled and ran at the man. He jumped off the wall, slashing the man's face. He continued to fight with him which gave Averi and Scott enough time to get up, but they didn't get up completely since they were still weak from the fight. Averi watched worriedly when the boy was thrown to the ground. Her eyes widened in realization as she realized who he was.
"Theo?" She whispered with surprise.
The werecreature turned back to Scott and went to swing at him, but Scott quickly ducked and slid away from him. He continued to back away and ducked each hit. She then used her air manipulation to lift to throw him at the wall.
"That's for throwing me against a wall." Averi sneered.
The werecreature gets up and he runs at Scott again. Scott ducked as he swung his claws, and kicked him in the leg. Scott tried to claw his face, but the werecreature grabbed his arm and flipped him onto the floor. Her eyes widened and a gasp left her lips at seeing the man had grabbed Scott's throat again and used his other hand to stick his claws in his chest. Scott struggled to breathe, gasping for air as he was brought to his knees.
By this point, Stiles, Malia, and Liam finally got to the area the fight was happening. They stopped by the entrance of the covering, staring in shock. Liam immediately turned to his wolf side, snarling. Averi and Theo got back up to their feet, ready to fight even if they were weak. Then suddenly Scott grabbed the man's wrist, staring at him with a glare and a low growl left his lips. He then pushed through the pain and stood. A sickening crack could be heard as Scott twisted the man's arm, causing the man to roar in pain. The man's grip on Scott was gone, he was holding onto his arm in pain.
Scott grabs the claws that were still stuck to his chest and throws them to the side. "I don't know who you are or what you thought you were going to do, but I'll give you a choice. You can stay and I'll break something else. Or you can run."
"I'd run." Stiles remarked.
And that's what he did. The man got up and ran. Averi and Scott met the others half way as they walked over to them under the covering. "Are you okay?" Stiles asks Averi with concern, wrapping his arm around her waist to pull her to his side. His eyes widen when he noticed the cuts on her arm. "Babe, you're hurt."
Averi sends him a reassuring smile, her arm wrapping around his waist. "I'm fine, I promise. The cuts will heal." Stiles still looked worried for her, but he nodded and pulled her closer to his side to kiss the top of her head.
The group turns to look at Theo, who walks over to the group with a smile. "You don't remember me, do you?" He glances at Averi with a smile. "Well, besides Averi. I know she remembered me." He shrugs. "I guess I look a little different since the fourth grade."
"Theo?" Scott said with surprise and Theo smirked.
Malia glances at Scott with confusion. "You know him?"
"They used to." Theo nods. "Trust me, I never thought I'd see you guys again. Couple months ago, I heard of an Alpha in Beacon Hills. When I found out his name was Scott McCall, just couldn't believe it. Not just an Alpha, but a True Alpha."
Scott looks like he's still not used to that title as he nods. "What do you want?"
"I came back to Beacon Hills." Theo smiles. "Back home with my family. Because I want to be a part of your pack."
****
Averi walked beside Scott and Stiles into the school, her hand intertwined with Stiles. The cuts on her arm has now began to heal. She was so thankful one of her powers was healing powers.
"We haven't seen this kid in years." Stiles points out. "You don't find that highly suspicious?"
"Maybe a little." Averi nodded in agreement.
"I'm kind of more concerned about the guy who just tried to kill me." Scott admitted.
"I just don't understand what he meant about wanting me for something " Averi sighed.
"He could've meant your power." Scott suggested. "It's possible."
"Yeah, maybe." Averi nodded.
The group stops in the hallway, turning to face Malia when she checked her phone after it buzzed. Malia's eyes widen and she smiles widely. "I'm in."
"You got in?" Averi grins. "Mal, you did it!" She was so happy for Malia. She knew how nervous the girl was about it.
"I passed." Malia said with confusion and surprise. "I'm officially a senior. "
Averi pulls her in for a hug. "So happy for you." Malia grinned and hugged her back.
"Thank God." Lydia said as she walks over to the group, looking annoyed, and behind her were Maverick and Kira. "Where have you guys been? The whole senior class is here." She smiles, raising her eyebrows. "Are we doing this or not?"
"Well, duh." Averi replied in a duh tone, smiling at Lydia.
The group share a smile with each other as they began to walk down the hallway to the library.
****
Soon it was turn for the group to write their initials on the bookshelf. Stiles was up first and then Averi was up next. She smiled slightly when she noticed Derek's initials signed on the book shelf. She handed the marker to Lydia, sharing a smile with her after she wrote her initials next to Stiles'. She then joined Stiles by the railing, smiling softly as he wrapped his arm around her to pull her close and kissed the side of her head. Her heart skipped a beat at his touch and the kiss. She leaned into him, resting her head on his chest and closed her eyes. He rested his head on top of hers and squeezed her shoulder.
"So, how are you feeling?" Stiles asked.
"I'm okay. My arm's healing." Averi responded, moving her arm slightly so she could look at it. The cuts were now almost healed and they didn't look too deep, which made her relieved.
Stiles sighs with relief and rubs her arm comfortingly. "Good. That's good." Averi lifted her head off his chest and glanced up at him with a small smile.
"Hey." Averi whispered.
Stiles looks down at her, his lips curving into a smile. "Yeah?"
"You know I love you, right?" Averi said, biting her lower lip as her cheeks began to grow warm.
Stiles' heart raced and he felt his face get warmer, a smile making its way onto his face. He cups her cheek and rubbed his thumb against her skin. "I know, I love you too."
Scott watches with a clenches jaw and looked away with a frown. "Get a room." Maverick playfully said to the couple, chuckling when Averi elbowed him.
"Shut up, Mav." Averi grumbled, sticking her tongue out at him and buried her face in Stiles' chest to hide her blush. Stiles smiled and pulled her closer. He felt a smile form on her lips when she did and she snuggled her face into his chest.
"This isn't vandalism, is it?" Kira nervously asked when it was her turn.
"Not technically." Lydia replied.
"It's fine, babe." Maverick reassured Kira with a smile. Kira smiled nervously and wrote her initials by Lydia's. She then gave the marker to Maverick, who wrote his initials by hers. Wrapping an arm around her shoulders, Maverick then walked over to the others with Kira to stand by the railing while they waited for their friends.
Averi noticed Malia paused for a moment as she decided what initial to write. She knew it must be hard for her to decide whether she should put Tate or Hale for her last name. She exchanged a smile with Malia when Malia stood by her right side. Scott was the last one of the friend group to go, writing his initials by Stiles' and Averi's. He paused afterwards, mentally debating on what he wanted to do. With a heavy heart, he then added Allison's initials by his.
Averi smiles softly after seeing Allison's initials. When Scott stood by his friends, he locked eyes with Averi, who sent him a soft smile and he returned the smile. "She would have been with us." Stiles spoke, glancing at Scott with a reassuring smile.
"Yeah." Scott agreed.
Lydia smiles softly. "She still is."
Maverick and Kira shared a glance and a smile before Maverick wrapped his arm around Kira and pulled her closer. Kira rested her head on his shoulder and smiled softly. Meanwhile, Averi shared a smile with Stiles as he held her close, leaning his head on top of hers. She smiled when she felt him kiss her head and she buried her face into his chest.
Soon they all leave the library, walking down the steps together. Stiles intertwined his hand with Averi's, sharing a smile with her. Maverick had his arm around Kira's shoulders, her hand holding on his that was on her shoulder. Even though it was the beginning of senior year and Averi was anxious for it, she knew she and the pack could get through anything together.
