Chapter Fifteen
Ratchet was gone for a few hours and soon returned with Rafael and his two daughters. He held coffee he got from the hospital where he visited Jack. He set his coat down as Riley slowly entered, holding Quinn's small hand.
Skye looked up and rushed in then carefully hugged the man. Raf smiled sadly as he took the coffee. Bumblebee stayed hidden in the kitchen as he hesitantly watched from his hiding place. He was nervous to talk to him and felt afraid to. He didn't want Rafael to be mad at him for leaving.
The doctor smiled a bit as he began hugging his granddaughter back. He glanced at Bumblebee in the kitchen and sighed softly. Riley picked up Quinn and set her on her hip. "How long will we need to stay here? My mom is at our home." She whispered.
The old medic looked over. "We will have to move her here or we all must go there." Ratchet said seriously.
"We have a house and it's bigger than this apartment... no offense." Rafael said and looked at them.
"I'm fine with that..." Skye sighed shakily and hugged her grandfather then looked to the kitchen. Wondering why Bee hadn't come out yet.
Riley nodded a bit, feeling more comfortable at their house. Ratchet rubbed his granddaughters back as he looked to the kitchen. "Bumblebee, it wouldn't kill you to come say hello." He muttered with a deep frown.
Rafael blinked in surprise and looked at the doctor. He hesitated and looked to the kitchen as the young man came out. He gasped quietly as he stared at his friend. "Bumblebee?" He whispered. The bot nodded slowly and stepped back in worry.
Ratchet smiled a little as he watched. "He's not going to bite you." He snorted softly in amusement as he looked between them. Riley looked over and her eyes widened a little, recognizing the name.
The young father stared at him then set the coffee on the side table. He smiled sadly and walked over to his friend. "Bumblebee..." he rasped quietly and scout nodded slowly. Raf grinned and hugged him tightly as he choked back a sob. Bumblebee stared for a moment then hugged his friend as he buried his face in his neck. He was back with his friend. His brother.
Ratchet smiled as he watched them, his heart warming. He knew this was a good moment for everyone, sparking hope in them. Riley smiled a bit as she watched, glad to see her father so happy.
"Bumblebee... my brother..." Raf whispered quietly as the two hugged each other close. After a moment they let go and gripped each others shoulders as they grinned excitedly. "Riley, Quinn, this is Bee." He choked happily. The scout smiled more and nodded as he watched them. He remembered Riley but not Quinn.
Riley smiled a little, her arms shifting Quinn in her hold as she grew anxious. "H-Hi." She whispered, Quinns head resting against her shoulder quietly. The little girl stared at the man curiously, watching them.
"Hi Bee." She smiled, picking up her head from the young woman's shoulder.
He smiled and looked at Rafael then tried to speak but nothing came out. He sighed shakily and gently patted Riley's head then made his hand go above her head a few feet as he smiled brightly. Indicating that she grew a lot. He looked at the small girl and waved a little then tried to talk again. He sighed and just smiled sadly.
"It... it broke again... didn't it?" Rafael whispered as he fixed his glasses and Bee nodded slowly.
Rileys expression brightened in amusement at him before it fell quickly, realizing what he meant. A sad look entered her eyes, having hoped it could've been fixed by now. Quinn pulled a bit on Rileys silver heart necklace as she stared at him.
"Broke what?" The child asked curiously, her voice soft and quiet.
"I managed to fix or temporarily fix his voice after... eight years... of when we got separated from the others. Once he was in his Holoform we managed to make sure it would work.... though I'm not perfect and it seemed to only work on occasion." He said seriously, seeming to feel bad for not being able to help better.
"Maybe his voice can come back. Maybe it's sleeping and it comes on and off." Quinn suggested, smiling brightly at her theory. Riley smiled a little and shifted her arms again.
"Maybe, Quinn." She murmured, adjusting her thin glasses anxiously.
Bumblebee stared at the child and smiled brightly then nodded. Raf chuckled softly and glanced at the older man. "Thank you Henry... but how did you know Bumblebee?" He asked and the doctor realized he never told him his name.
"I'm Ratchet." The old man spoke quietly as he held Skye close. Riley blinked and began sitting Quinn down.
"You're... the doctor?" She asked quietly, looking between them.
Ratchet nodded. "Yes. This is Skye, my granddaughter."
Rafael stared at him blankly as tears filled his eyes. "Ratchet..." he rasped quietly and shook his head. "Ratchet." He whispered and hugged him tightly. He choked back a sob as Skye smiled a little and stepped back for the two.
The medic blinked in surprise before smiling warmly, hugging him back. He gently pressed his wild hair down as he set a hand on his head. "Hello Rafael." He murmured softly, the old man holding him tightly.
"Why didn't you tell me who you were before?" He asked as he hugged him tightly and buried his face in him. He reminded the old bot of the small boy he once knew.
"Because I wasn't... sure of myself." Ratchet muttered. "My memory hasn't been kind to me lately." He said with a small smile as he rubbed his back gently and he held him.
He nodded in understanding and hugged him tighter before letting go. "I'll help you with that too..." he smiled slightly. "Come on... let's get you guys packed and to safety." He rasped.
Ratchet nodded a bit and began letting go. "Are you alright, Rafael?" He asked gently, worried as he looked down at him.
"Hmm? Oh yes. I'm more than alright." He said as he smiled brightly. "You guys finally came back." He grinned as tears filled his eyes and he gripped his shoulders. "We can defeat them now." He rasped.
Ratchet smiled and he gently took him by the shoulder for a moment. He then began leaving and went to go pack. Riley watched quietly and shifted, looking at them. "Would you like help with anything?"
"Yes please..." Skye whispered and Bumblebee offered to take Quinn so the girls could pack. He didn't have anything to take with him.
Riley smiled a little at him, thanking him quietly as she followed Skye to help her pack. Quinn watched them go and sat on the couch as they waited for them to finish packing.
Bumblebee looked at the child then smiled a little. Trying to help her feel better about being there. He didn't want her to be scared.
Quinn smiled back a bit, looking up at him. She looked to the hallway door as Ratchet began entering with a duffel bag that held a few things, soon Skye and Riley came to the living room as well. "Ready." Ratchet murmured.
"Ready." Skye smiled slightly and looked at him. They gathered everything and headed out after locking up.
They went to Rafael's home and entered. Riley showed the two to their rooms they could stay in. Quinn ran inside with them, giggling softly. Ratchet glanced at Rafs room, the door half open where Sari was sleeping. His expression softened and he looked away quickly.
The father didn't notice and Bumblebee looked to the room. He glanced at his friend for a moment with an unreadable expression. Bee stared at the room and saw the woman stirring a little. He silently went inside as he bit his lip. The scout smiled slightly as he walked over to his friend and sat by her side. Raf followed and gently brushed some hair out of her face. "Sari... this is Bumblebee." He said as he smiled with tears in his eyes.
Saris eyes moved around as she looked at Raf and Bumblebee. She blinked slowly and turned her head a bit as she looked at Bumblebee, smiling some. "Oh... how nice..." she spoke quietly, her hand shakily reaching out to touch Bumblebees hand. "We missed you... Raf missed you..." her lips twitched a bit as she held her smile weakly but her eyes held concern. She could see he wasn't completely alright. "Make yourself... at home, alright?"
He nodded slowly and gently gripped her hand as he smiled slightly. He looked at Raf then at her again. He gently kissed her hand and gave her a grateful expression. She knew he had been able to speak before he left them, but it was obvious he couldn't anymore. He looked to the other room again then at her. Rafael nodded slowly and left for a moment before coming back with the doctor. "Sweetheart... this is Ratchet. He's Skye's grandfather." He smiled brightly.
Sari smiled more as her expression brightened. She looked to the door as they came in, her eyes brightening as she saw her husband's bright smile. She hadn't seen him this happy in a long time. He looked like a young boy. Ratchet walked over to her and smiled a bit. "Hello." He greeted quietly.
"Nice to finally.... finally meet you." Sari whispered as she looked up at the old man. Ratchet studied her, seeing she was ill made him concerned but he didn't ask anything.
"Likewise." Ratchet murmured with his smile remaining. He glanced at the oxygen mask under her nose and gently fixed it. "How are you, Mrs. Esquivel?" He asked kindly. Sari watched him, smiling a little.
"I'm alright. Fairly tired." Sari spoke quietly, looking up at him gratefully before relaxing against the pillow more. She closed her eyes for a moment as she felt exhaustion briefly sweep over her.
Bumblebee grinned excitedly at seeing her again and seeing her happy with the doctor, but it faded as he suddenly realized just how ill she was. He thought for a moment then looked at the doctor again. Raf smiled as he listened to them then became concerned when she got tired. He gently rubbed her cheek with his thumb as he watched her.
Ratchet stepped back a bit and glanced at Bumblebee. He nodded a little sadly and he quietly gestured to her. She was ill but he would ask Raf later to see if there was anything he could do to help. Sari opened her eyes and leaned into his hand slowly.
"Don't worry...still waking up sweetheart..." she murmured with a small smile as she took her hand up and gently grasped his hand, rubbing the top of it with her thumb.
Raf watched her intently then gently kissed her forehead as he gripped her hand. Bumblebee watched then smiled a little as he thought about something. His expression became unreadable as he looked at the doctor again. Raf spoke to her for a moment then carefully got up to let her rest. He glanced at the others then at the doorway as Skye stood there. She hesitated and stepped back as they saw her and she looked at the floor. Raf motioned for her to come in and the other two left so it wasn't crowded.
Ratchet left with Bumblebee and frowned a bit. "I hope she hasn't contracted anything that would shut down her systems." He muttered as he walked with him. "She's too weak for her age."
Bumblebee looked at him then searched his pockets as he furrowed his brow. He then glanced around as he became concerned. He was trying to find something to write with to explain something to him.
Ratchet noticed, having forgotten. He went to the kitchen and looked to Riley. "Is there any paper and pens we could borrow?" He asked and she nodded. Riley went to Quinns coloring and grabbed a piece of empty copy paper and a glitter pen. She went to them and handed it to Bumblebee quietly.
The scout thanked her and glanced at the pen then grinned excitedly and looked at her again. He then went to the counter and started to write.
The doctor followed him and waited for him to finish writing. Riley curiously watched them but didn't peer over. She sat down on the ground next to Quinn and began playing with her.
Bumblebee continued to write and furrowed his brow for a moment then sighed as he finished. He looked at him and stepped back.
-I've seen this sickness before in another human settlement. There were four cases of this and they managed to find a cure... I helped them a little... but they gave me the medicine and a recipe for it in case I came across it again.
Ratchet pulled the paper close and looked over it. He read over it and frowned. "What do you mean four cases?" He whispered. "How can we make this cure?" He asked quietly as he looked at him in confusion. Riley frowned as she listened, glancing over sometimes.
Bumblebee thought about it for a moment then continued to write things down.
-This is a rare disease but the place I went to had special cases. How long has she had this illness?
Ratchet frowned deeply as he looked at the paper, reading. "I'm not sure how long she has had it." He spoke honestly.
"Since Quinn was born so four years." Riley said quietly as she got up and walked towards them. "You know what Mom has?" She asked as her eyebrows furrowed. "How is it treated?"
Bumblebee looked at her and his eyes widened in horror. He shook his head and quickly wrote something then rushed off to look through his bag.
-Four years... those who have been sick for that long are close to death. We had four cases but only one survived because of how long it was with the others. I have-
Ratchet and Riley looked to the paper and began reading. Their eyes widened and Riley covered her mouth with a shaky hand as her eyes began watering. "Please... tell me you're joking." She spoke shakily, worried.
The doctor frowned as he looked at Bumblebee. "Is this contagious?"
The scout looked at him and then at her as he shook his head to her question. He glanced at him then rushed over and wrote before searching again.
-Only through injection. I have a suspicion that this is a Decepticon illness they created to slowly kill us off. It's not perfect hence why it takes so long.
"Are you telling me a Decepticon came into our home and injected Sari?" Rileys eyes widened, trembling with fear, her anxiety levels rising quickly.
Ratchet rubbed her back as he looked at her. "Did your mother have Quinn at the hospital?" He asked quietly and she nodded. He looked to Bumblebee. "There might be another Decepticon in that hospital. Or someone working for them." He spoke with seriousness, concerned.
Bee shook his head and looked at her then wrote some more before walking off again. He needed to find it.
-No it was just Airachnid. I made sure... and I remember she was assigned to that task. I've been following her around and lost track of her... recently found her and disposed of her though.
Ratchet frowned as he read over the note. He sighed softly and let Riley take the paper and read it. "What are you looking for?" He asked as he watched the young man leave.
He shook his head and gripped his hair as he scanned and tried to calm down. He sighed forcefully and closed his eyes as he forced himself to focus and not stress.
Ratchet gently took him to a chair and had him sit. "Relax Bumblebee. What is it?" He asked quietly. Riley watched the man with worry.
He hesitated and looked at her then at him before quickly writing something down. He thought for a moment and kept writing before jumping up and running off to look again.
-I'm looking for the cure. If I don't find it she won't last much longer, nor will her body take the cure.
Ratchet and Riley read the note then began helping him look, the two worried about how much the woman had left. They opened his bag and searched through his things, hoping to find it.
Bumblebee yelled silently as he looked then ran out of the home and headed back to the apartment. He had to save her. He wasn't going to let another person die from this.
