The abyss stares back

————————-

Jaune was awoken by the sun peering through his window.

He rolled over in his bed, covering his eyes with his blanket in an effort to shield himself from the suns burning glare.

Bur that's when it hit him, he didn't have a bed!

Jaune quickly rolled off the bed and pulled his sword out, glancing around the room and pointing his sword all over.

He was inside, that much was certain, but that question was how did he get there?

That's when the memories started to flood back, the raid of the strange village, the army of monsters, the evoker, and his defeat of them.

Calming down slightly, he took notice of the setting his was in.

It was a modest home, made of mostly wood with some stone supports on the sides. The bed he had awoken in was behind him, with the room being bare besides it.

Taking a look out of the window beside him he noticed the strange creature he protected running around doing daily chores. He saw one farming what looked to be wheat, another was dragging some animals along to their pen, he even say one repairing the wall from the previous night.

-well at least we know we made a difference-

-it is nice to see our actions were not in vain-

-well now what?-

-we should go out, not without protection of course, re-equipping our armor would be a good start, as well as crafting a new shield-

True to the voices words, Jaune noticed his armor was missing from his body, leaving him in his ripped jeans and green hoodie. He quickly took note of his armor stacked in the corner, and picked it up.

As he placed the armor back on, he noticed the many cracks and dents in his equipment. Especially his Chestplate and boots. It seems that stunt with the evoker at the end of the fight had some consequences

-well this can't be good, what are we gonna do if our armor breaks?-

-simple, make some new equipment, with whatever we have-

-well I for one think we need better equipment then just iron, there's got to be better stuff somewhere in this world!-

-well the only way to find out is to consult the book-

Jaune pulled out his shiny book and took a seat on his new bed, preparing to read another section.

He flipped to the section titled "mining and the deep" and read on

Mining is quite simple, all you must do is go down deep enough to where lava can be found, and search for the rarest ores there. Diamonds are the best that can be found in the over world, and they are what you should strive to find in your mining trip

Jaune closed the book, silently thanking whoever wrote it for saving him the trouble of finding that out by himself.

-well, now we know how to get some good stuff, finally! I'm getting sick of our stuff constantly breaking-

-now we have a goal, first we have to actually leave this hut we woke up in. We should at least explore the place we saved-

Jaune agreed with the voice, and went to the door.

He opened it slightly, peering out into the village. Seeing no threats, he stepped out into the town.

The residents of the village were still running around, minding their own business and doing their jobs. They even ran by Jaune and completely ignored him, not even sparing the man clad in armor with weapons a second glance.

-the hell?-

How could they not even a acknowledge him? He didn't even look like them!

Jaune was about to do something to attempt to gain their attention, when he felt very cold suddenly. The warming heat of the sun seemed to no longer reach him, and he turned around to find out why

Standing there was one of those giant golems that had fought on his side, the beast was made of some strange metal, with vines growing over its giant form.

Jaunes eyes widened as he took in the giants quite intimidating form

Jaune: uh, hi?

The golem reached its hand up, and Jaune braced himself, bringing his shield up to hopefully spare him some of the pain.

But nothing came

Jaune peered out from behind his shield and met eyes with the golem. Instead of attacking him, the golem was holding a rose out, as a sign of friendship perhaps?

-awww, that's cute!-

-did you just call a giant 8 foot golem cute?-

-perhaps-

Jaune hesitatingly reached out and took the rose, placing in his inventory.

Jaune: uh, thanks?

The golem seemed satisfied with his answer and walked off, leaving a very confused Jaune in its wake

-well now what?-

-now we go into the depths, we need new equipment-

-so what, we just dig straight down until we find a cave?-

-what? No that's stupid!-

——————————

Jaune was now digging straight down looking for a cave to find better materials

-this is the greatest idea ever, of all time-

-I hate you-

Soon enough however, Jaune broke a block and fell into a cave system, slowing his fall by landing on his shield

-see! Perfect plan-

-we are so lucky that wasn't a lava pit, or a pit of monsters, or just a really deep pit-

Jaune took out a torch, illuminating the damp cave with the fire. He waved his fiery stick around, looking at the many branching paths of the cave he had just landed in.

Each path seemed to lead into a never ending darkness, with not even monsters populating it.

Jaune steeled his nerves and headed down one of the paths, holding his torch out in one hand and his sword in another.

The first stretch of the cave had nothing much, just some coal and iron which Jaune promptly mined.

Eventually he found himself a new ore, a dark blue ore that when broken gave him about 4 per ore. He ended up with 30

-what is this?-

-the book called it lapis, we should keep it even if we can't make armor-

Jaune trekked further into the depths, now finding himself in a more open cave, with still no monsters, and a light source.

The source he found was a large pool of lava, which bubbled ominously.

-definitely don't want to fall into that-

-agreed-

But at the other end of the lava pit was his prize, the one thing he came down here for.

Diamonds

The blue ore shined brilliantly, the light blue contrasting with the orange of the lava.

-great we found it! Now we have to go across this giant pool of lava!-

Jaune took a deep breath, steeling his nerves and focusing on his goal

He would have those diamonds, even if it meant going over lava.

Jaune carefully bridged his way over, using the cobblestone he gathered from getting down to the cave.

Once he had reached the diamonds, he quickly built a large platform around them, he didn't want to lose them to the lava.

Carefully and quickly he mined the ore, flinching every time he thought one was going to fall into the lava and be lost forever

Eventually he was able to mine all of it, getting 8 in total.

-yes! We did it!-

-now all we have to do is get out-

Jaune slowly walked back on his path over the lava, and walking further into the caves

-I thought we were leaving?-

-it would be a shame not to explore some more while we are down here-

Deeper and deeper Jaune went, going further and further into the abyss, until eventually, Jaune took notice of something

He had not found a single monster throughout his entire journey. Not once had he even heard a zombie moan or the rattle of a skeletons bones.

It has been completely quiet

-i wonder why there's been no monsters, don't they usually stay in caves to avoid the sun?-

The voices question was answered by loud footsteps slowly approaching jaune

-what the hell?-

-quickly hide!-

Jaune ducked behind some rocks and peered over them to see what's coming

Walking down the cave was a giant creature straight out of Jaunes nightmares, something so terrifying that not even the creatures of the Grimm could compare

It stood at around 9 feet tall, with large torquies antlers making it even taller. It had its chest exposed, with bones sticking out in the shape of a rib cage. In the center where the lungs would be is what looked like faces, each of their features twisted in agony.

Their arms were elongated, reaching all the way down to the creatures legs. The arms themselves were also a dark blue color, similar to the rest of the body

But the most terrifying part of it all was the face

It had no eyes, no nose, no ears. Only a large mouth that could fit Jaune in without even trying.

It almost looked like those golems from the village, but corrupted and terrifying.

-what, the, fuck-

-this is why there's no monsters in this cave, this creature must be killing them-

-well that's great, now we know! Can we please get the fuck out of here!-

-yes, run back the way we came, we need to leave-

Jayne started to book it towards the area he had come from, not caring how much noise he made.

A fatal mistake

The creature reered its head and sprinted towards Jaune, moving much faster then any monster Jaune had encountered thus far.

Jaune sprinted through the corridors, the creature directly on his tail, it seemed no matter how far or fast Jaune ran the creature was on his tail

-we can't keep doing this-

-we can't kill it with our current equipment, we need to separate it from us-

-how?-

-gravel patch, directly ahead-

Jaune looked up, and sure enough, there was a gravel patch above.

Jaune jumped forwards, turning around and throwing his sword into the gravel. It fell onto the small space between Jaune and the creature, successfully separating them

Jaune was Safe

For now
