Chapter 40- Daniel's POV

My mom and dad stopped talking when we entered the dining room and looked at us. She smiled and dipped her head closer to her chest while she looked at us. "Daniel, Katie," she said with a small hum in her voice, and I offered her a tight smile. "How did you sleep?"

"Good," I said while I dipped my head closer to my chest. I walked over to her, squeezing my mate's hand. "How did you sleep? Are you ok?"

"Hmph." She slowly nodded and cleared her throat while she shifted in her seat. "I slept well," she said and moved a hand across her belly. "The baby is ready to come out any day now, aren't you?" She looked at her belly and wrinkled her nose while she pursed her lips in annoyance, and I bit back a small smile while she looked at me again.

She cleared her throat and shifted in her seat. "So, how did you two sleep?" she asked while she raised an eyebrow in question.

"Good," I said and slowly nodded before I looked at my mate and raised an eyebrow in question. "How about you? How did you sleep?"

Katie smiled and nodded. She didn't say a word, and I had a feeling that it was because of the others in the room, even though I had a feeling she was comfortable to talk to in front of my mother and father.

My mother sighed with relief and cleared her throat. "Good," she said. "No nightmares?" she asked while she raised an eyebrow in question, looking at my mate, and my mate hesitated before she shook her head no.

I shifted slightly on my feet, and my mother instantly looked at me with a raised eyebrow and so did my mate. I shook my head and silently told her that I would tell her later, and she hummed before she slowly nodded.

My mate squeezed my hand, and I looked at her. She furrowed her brows and cocked her head while she studied me, silently asking me what was wrong and why I wanted to talk to her privately.

I offered her a small smile and squeezed her hand before I shook my head, and she scowled and narrowed her eyes while she looked at me. "Do you want to go sit with them and I can bring you some food?" I asked while I raised an eyebrow in question before I relaxed it, changing the subject and praying that she would let me. "Breakfast is ready, right?" I looked at my mother when I asked that and raised an eyebrow in question again.

My mother nodded in confirmation. "It is," she confirmed. She rubbed her belly some more and looked at it before she looked at my mate. "Do you want to sit?" she asked and raised an eyebrow in question, gesturing towards the chair beside her.

Katie hesitated before she looked at me and then at my mom. She didn't say a word and slowly nodded before she gave me a quick peck on the lips and then walked over to them.

I bit back a small smile while I watched my mate give my mom a quick hug, and my mom whispered something in her ear, something that I didn't try to hear.

Katie nodded and walked over to a seat. She looked at me and cocked her head, smiling a little, silently wondering if I was going to go and get her food or was just going to stand there and stare.

I bit back a small chuckle and dipped my head closer to my chest. "I mean, I wouldn't mind just standing and staring at my beautiful mate," I said, and her cheeks turned just as red as her hair.

'Stop,' she said, her cheeks turning redder, and my mother chuckled while she stared at us, leaning back in her seat. 'Please.'

"And go ahead and get her food," my mother said, and I looked at her and scowled playfully. She smiled and tucked her head closer to her chest, staring at me with eyes filled with amusement. "She needs something to eat."

"I know, Mom," I said while I nodded. I cleared my throat and looked around the room, not seeing my cousin before I looked at her again. "Where's the child?" I asked, and I raised an eyebrow in question.

"Jess is still "asleep,"" my mother said. She bit back a small snort and shifted in her seat, trying to get comfortable. "That isn't going to be confusing."

I bit back a small chuckle and nodded, silently agreeing with her. "We need to find a nickname or something for her," I said, and she hummed and nodded in agreement. "However, we are going to have to come up with something later because I am going to get my mate and myself some food."

My mom laughed and nodded in agreement. "Go ahead and get your mate some food," she said, "and eat yourself. You both need it." She waved me to the kitchen, and I held back an eye roll but did what she told me to do and went to get us something to eat.

Goddess I love them even if they are a pain in my ass in more ways than one...

"So, what are we going to do about our guests?" I asked, setting down a plate of food in front of my mate and then sitting down beside her. "Or have you all discussed that?"

Kaite offered me a happy and thankful smile before she started to eat some of her food. She didn't say a word and continued to eat, waiting for my mom or dad to say something.

My father looked at my mother before he looked at me, clearing his throat and shifting in his seat. "Why don't we talk about it after breakfast and in the office?" he asked and raised an eyebrow in question. "Your mother and I have made some plans, but we are going to run it by you first."

I set my jaw but didn't say a word when my mate nudged my leg with hers. I glanced at her from the corner of my eye, and she subtly shook her head, silently indicating that we should listen to them and wait.

"Some things are better kept private, Daniel," my mother said and gave me a pointed look, and she raised her eyebrows in unison. "They also need to be talked about in private. This is one of those times."

I set my jaw and narrowed my eyes while I stared at her, but I didn't say a word. My whole body was tense, and I didn't know if I wanted to argue with her about this or not.

My mate nudged my shoulder, and I turned to look at her. She stared at me with wide blue eyes before she looked at my mother and then at me again. She blinked and shook her head, silently indicating that she believed my mother and we shouldn't talk about this here.

Finally, I sighed and nodded, relenting. "Fine," I said and set my jaw. "We can talk about this later when we are alone, then." I took a bite of my food and started to chew before I cleared my throat. "Do you know if Roger is coming here soon?" I asked, changing the subject, and Mom bit back a small laugh and nodded.

"I wouldn't be surprised," she said. "I think he heard about our escapade last night, and I am going to be in so much trouble." She smirked and took a bite of food, her eyes filled with amusement and not worry.

"As long as he doesn't lay a hand o-"

"He won't, Daniel," Mom said and shook her head, interrupting Dad with a small chuckle in her voice. "He will not lay a hand on me unless he wants my grandfather to come back from the grave and beat his butt."

"Or your father, both of them to be exact," Dad said, giving her a pointed look, and Mom chuckled and nodded.

"And brothers," she replied and shrugged, grimacing. "They will have my back."

"And son," I said, not wanting to be left out of this. I set my jaw further and narrowed my eyes while I looked at him. "I wouldn't mind beating his butt if he lays a hand on you."

My mother chuckled and nodded in confirmation. "Yes, I know," she said and finished eating her food. She cleared her throat and rubbed her belly, grimacing slightly. "I have a few protective men to watch after me if something happens and if I can't take care of myself."

"A few?" Dad asked and raised an eyebrow in question before he gave her a pointed look. "Do you want to change that statement, Luna?"

Mom bit back a small laugh and shook her head. "Fine, fine," she said. "I have a packful of people to keep an eye on me and make sure that I stay safe. "Does that sound better, Alpha?" she teased and narrowed her eyes at her mate.

"Definitely," he said and nodded in confirmation, and I bit back a small snort and rolled my eyes, amused. "I am pleased that you are more aware that there are more people that will protect you no matter what."

"And to have your back." I turned my gaze to my mate and smiled, and she looked at me and smiled hesitantly. "That goes for you too, Katie," I said. "The pack will have your back no matter what."

I bowed my head, submitting to her and only to her, for she was my Luna and my queen. "You have my word."
