Chapter Thirty-Five: Life's Too Short

Saihara's POV:

"You don't know....you DON'T KNOW?" Ouma looked at him angrily, "oh cause I thought this entire time your one goal was to make sure I remembered every damn second I saw you what I did! LET ME JUST SAY YOU'RE DOING A FUCKING GOOD JOB AT IT!" Ouma shouted, he even had a bit of dry laughter mixed in. "I'm shouldn't have- let me fix-" I stuttered.

"You can't fix anything Saihara don't you get it? You couldn't save anyone from the fucking game, you couldn't figure out what was going on unless I laid out the fucking steps for you, who was the one who did ANYTHING to try and get us out of that hellhole Saihara? Are you fucking dense? You're not the hero anymore Saihara! You're a normal person! SO STOP ALREADY!" Ouma reminded me bitterly as he left the room.

He's right...I'm useless...I'm horrible...I didn't do anything...Momota is wrong...Maiko is wrong...what did I even do? Even if I try my best I couldn't save anyone from dying...even if they didn't die from us failing an investigation they still DIED.

They still got murdered. They still got executed.

I just let them suffer another day...just to let them die...why...what am I even doing here...? What am I trying to do? He clearly won't forget what I've done...I can't even blame him for once for that.

Failure

Useless

Idiot

Who did you save?

You're pathetic

You can't do anything

Monster? WHO IS THE MONSTER NOW!

You're to blame for everything! YOU ARE THE REASON WHY EVERYTHING HAS HAPPENED! YOU FAILED THEM! YOU FAILED THEM AND BECAUSE OF WHAT A PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR LIFE YOU ARE YOU DIDN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING BUT WATCH! YOU DIDN'T EVEN TAKE THE BURDEN! YOU SELFISH LITTLE-

I was sitting behind a bookcase when my elbow hit hard against a book, my eyes widened as the creaking noise ricocheted off of the walls and opened...a bookcase.

I felt myself hyperventilating as I dashed away from the side of the bookcase and looking behind me grabbing a nearby book ready to defend myself...

....

....

Only to be left with nothing. I looked at my shaking hands and set it down hesitantly wiping away my tears as I turned around and back towards the door. It wasn't the library...this isn't that library Shuichi...just calm down...

I got up and headed closer to the bookcase and looked behind the door, it leads into what seemed like a narrow hallway with dim lighting provided by lights that seemed to be nearly out of battery with how much they flickered.

What is this? A secret passage?

....what are they hiding in here?

I felt bitterness taking over me, even after all that happened they're not honest with us. This is just like the game's library as well...what a cruel inside joke this must have been...

Anger clouding my better judgment I walked into the hallway using a book to keep the door from potentially locking itself behind me. My feet even in the slippers were freezing inside of the hallway and I could hear water dripping far off in the distance as I looked for any signs of what the hallway was leading me towards, it might have been a whole ten minutes till I saw two passages colliding with my own. Oh no..I better not get lost...

Lucky or unlucky for me I found the end of the path not long after. It leads to three doors all beside one another, with a little picture carved into the iron door. Two of the doors seemed to be locked and I didn't have any kind of key for them, but the third door which's lock seemed broken seemed easy enough to open as I pulled it open...

I first noticed the candles.

The entire room was lit by candlelight which seemed dangerous to me but my thoughts on fire safety were distracted by the portraits in the room which stretched long and far, on each one seemed to be a teenager or young around my age with a plaque written underneath.

I hesitantly headed over to one of the firsts it was what looked like a young girl who was smiling nervously for what I guessed was a school picture.

Fujisaki Chihiro-1st Game

Fujisaki....wait I looked back towards the picture, I could remember Shirogane cosplaying as them during the final trial, they were in the games? I looked across towards the previous pictures of other students for a while and all of them reminded me of someone who Shirogane cosplayed as either labeled as the first or second game along with a name.

Is this a memorial room? Most of the pictures had candles next to them as well along with long-dead flowers. This is creepy...I finally then wandered into an area where the quality of the photos was much more familiar to me as the ones previously looked almost vintage but none of these students were cosplayed.

They were named season one.

A cold feeling went down my spine as I gazed at all the photos, all of them having candles with them and some flowers...season one...so...if my game is season fifty-three...oh god...I felt my pace slowing down as the number of candles scared me to near death, and the pictures which used to be of just teenagers seemed to shift towards people who looked as young as twelve with bright grins as their stare seemed to follow me around the room.

The abundance of candles I came to realize isn't because the people in these photos died long ago because by season six it was clear that something had happened during these earlier seasons and occasionally even the later ones as if something had killed them unexpectedly.

What's going on....why can't I remember any of this? It seems so familiar...It was like knowing you met someone before but were unable to remember their name. It felt like I could just say it but nothing came out.

Did he know these people...?

Wait...what if...I hurried down the hall further and eventually found it. Season forty-nine, there was surprisingly a lack of candles for their season none at all along with a lack of flowers...I guess no one died for real for Maiko...so that means no one will die in my season...right?

The portrait of Maiko was of a shy and nervous girl, she had Maiko's hair color but rather than the short hairstyle I was used to seeing her in she seemed to hold it into a long side braid along with wearing a turtleneck rather than a school uniform. She didn't smile in the photo and seemed to be looking at someone from beyond the camera...

Does she know this is down here?

I was about to turn around when I saw another glowing from a candle further down the hall, I decided to see who it was to see if maybe I could recognize them or if it would teach me something new...

It was a portrait of a Kiibo. I was confused with the name on the bottom as red flags seemed to be going in my head when I finally realized I had read the name Chiharu Kosuke before, racing back I went back to the fiftieth season and sure enough, the boy with the same name was there, he looked shy and nervous but then I saw a symbol on his plack which separated him from the rest.

It was a red dot, at first I thought it meant blood or something but instead, I squinted and realized it looked more like a visual effect added in movies to either represent a camera recording.

Camera...

My eyes widened in fear as I looked towards the next seasons for other symbols, there was one for each though they lacked the portrait of the first boy and the name was in parenthesis just like as it was for Kiibo...

So that's what a camera means...? He went into multiple seasons...I don't think he's like Amami or Shirogane though...he doesn't carry on over the same name just the symbol of being the camera...

Why would you do that to a person though? And why does Kiibo have the...candle...

I don't know when it was I dropped to my knees and when I felt my insides churning up as I saw the room spinning around me hazy figures were made out in the distance as I couldn't help but scream.

He's dead.

He's dead.

He's dead.

And he's not coming back this time...

I told you you were a failure.
