Chapter 9
3rd Person P.O.V
The drive over to the Sanderson cottage was somewhat tense. Max had focused on driving the car while Allison and Rowena came up with a plan on what to do, although Max did input some ideas of his own as well.
"So, Thackery told a little bit about your past with the Sanderson Sisters. I don't mean to pry, but I'm kinda curious about your relationship with Sarah." Allison said.
"What do you want to know?" Rowena asked.
"Well, what made you realise that you were in love with her?" Allison questioned curiously.
"Truthfully, Sarah and I were best friends from a young age, and practically inseparable. A lot of people found her ditzy personality annoying, but I always found it charming. Sarah is also a lot smarter than people tend to give her credit for due to how she acts. But I think what made me realise I loved her was the fact she was so carefree and didn't let what people said affect her. And then shortly after I turned 22, I finally got enough courage to tell Sarah how I felt, and luckily for me she felt the same way." Rowena answered.
"So, were you really there that night? In 1693?" Max asked.
"Yes, I was. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to save the Binx children from their respective fates. A witch without a coven is not quite as powerful as a witch who has one. I was with the Sanderson Sisters when the townsfolk arrived, but Sarah pushed for me to leave, because she knew they would try to kill me along with them if they found me there. So I escaped, while Sarah, Winifred and Mary were caught and killed by the Salem townsfolk." Rowena explained.
"Whoa, so you spent three hundred years alone, all because you promised Sarah you would wait for her to return." Allison said.
"Indeed. Three hundred years consisting of moving every so often because people would freak out if they ever figured out I don't age. Just like why I pretended to be my own descendant when I returned to this town three years ago. People would freak out if they learned that I'm actually 350 years old, yet I look like I'm in my late 20s." Rowena told them, before recognising where they were.
"Max, turn off the headlights. We don't want to alert them that we're coming." Rowena said. Max quickly did so, and they pulled up outside the Sanderson cottage as quietly as possible, before halting just outside.
"And we're here." Max said.
"Alright, so we all know the plan. Max goes in to distract them. I'll be waiting out of sight just outside the door. When I hear the agreed phrase, I signal Allison, then we use the distraction to rescue Dani and Thackery, and then we get out fast and head to the graveyard. Then it's a matter of playing defence until sunrise." Rowena said, earning nods from the two teens. Max got out the car, followed by Rowena, and the two quietly walked to the front door. Rowena positioned herself outside the door, before Max burst through the front door, gaining the sisters' attention.
"Prepare to die! Again." Max said, barely noticing Jay and Ice in the two cages hanging from the ceiling.
"You! You have no powers here, you fool." Winifred said.
Maybe not, but there's a power greater than your magic, and that's knowledge. And there's one thing that I know that you don't." Max said
"And what is that, dude?" Winifred asked sarcastically, causing Mary and Sarah to laugh.
"Daylight savings time." Max answered. At this, Rowena signalled Allison. Seconds later, a pink light shone through the windows of the cottage, and the sisters mistook it for the rising sun and began to panic, before all three of them collapsed to the floor in a heap. Max rushed over to free his sister, while Rowena went inside and over to the bag hanging by the fireplace, which was where Thackery was being kept. Once Dani was free, Max quickly kicked down the cauldron, spilling all the potion in the process.
"Hot! Hot cat! Hot cat!" Thackery exclaimed.
"I've got you, Thackery." Rowena said, quickly unhooking the bag and lifting Thackery out.
"Rowena?" Thackery questioned.
"Hello again, old friend. Max, Dani, let's go." Rowena said, exiting the cottage. Max and Dani followed, after Max retrieved his shoes from Ice. The two ran outside, but Dani paused just outside the door.
"Max, I wanna see her turn to dust." Dani said. The sound of whistling caught their attention, and they turned to see Allison gesturing to the car, causing Dani to figure out the trick, so she and Max ran to the car and quickly got it. Max then started the car and drove away from the cottage, knowing it would only be a matter of time before the Sanderson Sisters realised they'd been tricked again, though he did have to navigate through the crowd of hypnotised children as he didn't want to accidentally hit one of them. Eventually they made it through, and Max started driving to the cemetery.
"Are they following us?" Max asked, which made Allison look out the car.
"No." Allison answered.
"Good." Max said in relief. A few minutes later, however, Rowena spotted Winifred flying alongside the car.
"Max, on your left!" Rowena warned. Winifred attempted to pull Max out of the car, but he managed to fend her off and sent her flying into some bushes at the side of the road. A short while later, they reached the cemetery. Max stopped the car, and they all got out and went through the gates in order to get on hallowed ground. Rowena was able to follow them because she was a white witch, so this meant she could safely set foot in the cemetery.
"Go, go, go! Run!" Max said, hurrying to close the gate. However, when he turned back around, he bumped into Billy and fell to the ground.
"Max!" Dani called.
"No. Wait, Dani." Rowena said, holding her back. She knew Billy wouldn't hurt Max, who was now holding a switchblade.
"Run!" Max shouted, so the others did so, with Thackery leading them back towards Billy's open grave. A few minutes later, they saw Max coming toward them, followed by Billy.
"Max, come on, move out of the way!" Allison said, moving to attack Billy.
"Allison, stop! Billy is good. He's not going to hurt us." Rowena said.
"But all he's done all night is chase us." Allison said.
"There was probably a reason behind it. After all, Billy never really liked Winifred all that much." Rowena told her.
"No, I didn't. Though it's good to see you again, Rowena." Billy said.
"It's good to see you too, old friend. Alright, now to prepare. Dani, you will stay in Billy's grave and not move from that spot. We'll put a circle of salt around the grave for added protection. Billy will guard you while you're in there. Max and Allison, you deal with Winifred and Mary. I'll keep Sarah distracted as much as possible." Rowena said. Billy helped Dani into the grave, and Allison poured the circle of salt around it. Max had retrieved a baseball bat from the bag he had brought, and took a few practice swings with it.
"Here they come!" Thackery warned.
"Billy, guard Dani! Max, Allison, spread out!" Rowena said. She, Max and Allison split up and headed into different directions. When she saw Sarah, Rowena made her move. She levitated off the ground and silently flew over to where Sarah was, though she did find it amusing that Sarah was flying on a mop instead of a broom.
"Hello again, my beloved Sarah." Rowena said, causing Sarah to jump a little before turning in midair to see who had spoken.
"Rowena!" Sarah cheered when she saw her. Rowena gave a slight laugh before she moved so she could sit on the mop in front of Sarah.
"I told you that you'd see me again tonight." Rowena said.
"Indeed you did." Sarah said. Rowena gave a light smile as she leaned into Sarah, who adjusted her position a little in order to put an arm around the brunette. Despite the fact it was nearing sunrise, Sarah was quite happy to abandon Winifred's plan in order to spend what precious little time she had left with Rowena. A lot of things could be said about Sarah Sanderson, but that she was incapable of love was not one of them. Sarah may have been evil, but even a fool could see how much the blond witch loved Rowena, and that the love was reciprocated by the brunette just as much.
"I wish I could just freeze this moment in time, just to spend more time with you. I don't think I'll be able to handle losing you at sunrise." Rowena said.
"You're strong, my love. I may only have a little while left, but at least I gain comfort in knowing that you loved me enough to wait for me." Sarah said.
"I always will, Sarah. No matter how long it takes, I will find a way to bring you back again and I will ensure you live past sunrise the next day. I just hope it won't take another three hundred years." Rowena said, and Sarah knew that she meant it. Then, Rowena noticed that Dani had climbed out of Billy's grave in order to retrieve Billy's head, which had been knocked off by Winifred, who had then proceeded to swoop down on her broom and grab Dani.
"Dani!" Rowena called out, which gained Max and Allison's attention. Rowena turned and gave Sarah a brief kiss, despite knowing it would be the last one she would be able to give her, before she jumped off the mop, though not bothering to use her magic to slow the thirty foot fall. Rowena landed on the ground and ran over to join Max and Allison.
"Hold on, Dani!" Thackery called, before quickly running up a nearby tree. He then took a running leap and managed to land on Winifred, knocking the potion vial out of her hand. Rowena caught the vial and then held it up just as Winifred threw Thackery off her, causing him to hit the rock next to his sister's grave.
"Winifred! Let Dani go, or I'll smash the vial!" Rowena said. Winifred and Mary both looked shocked at the sight of Rowena, which led the brunette to believe that Sarah had not told them she was still alive. Sadly, the shock was only momentary.
"Smash it and she dies!" Winifred threatened. That made Rowena conflicted, unable to think of a way to save Dani that involved keeping the vial away from Winifred. However, Max had other ideas. Making a split-second decision, he grabbed the vial from Rowena and downed the contents before throwing the empty vial away.
"Now you have no choice! You have to take me instead." Max said. Winifred lowered her broom to hover only a couple of feet off the ground.
"You are a fool to give up your life for your sister's." Winifred said. She threw Dani down and grabbed Max by the front of his shirt, rising back up into the air and lifting him with her. Rowena, Allison and Billy all ran to Dani to make sure she was alright. Max was doing his best to fend off Winifred and keep her from consuming his life force, and managed to push her back enough to make her unsteady on her broom.
"Ah! Hallowed ground! Sisters!" Winifred called.
"Winnie, I'm coming!" Mary said, flying toward her older sister. Rowena noticed the extension cord dangling from the vacuum, so she grabbed it and held on tight, leading Dani, Allison and Billy to all do the same, preventing Mary from helping Winifred.
"Sarah!" Mary called for her sister's help, so Sarah flew over and grabbed her sister's outstretched hand, trying to help pull her free but to no avail. As this was going on, the sun had begun to rise into the sky.
"Let go, now!" Allison said. She, Dani, Rowena and Billy all let go of the extension cord, which caused Sarah and Mary to fly backwards and up into the air. This gave Max the distraction he needed to knock Winifred off her broom, though this sent both of them falling to the ground. Winifred was quick to get back up and lift Max back into the air in an attempt to still consume his life force. But because Winifred was stood on hallowed ground, she was soon turned to stone, and it was only then that Max was able to free himself. Rowena ran over to check on him. Up in the air, Sarah and Mary were hit by the sunlight.
"Winnie! Goodbye!" Sarah said, though she was looking at Rowena as she said the second part, before she vanished in a flash of purple.
"Uh oh. Bye bye." Mary said, before she vanished in a flash of red. Seconds later, Winifred's statue exploded into green sparks, though Rowena shielded Max with her own body to protect him. Once it was safe to do so, Rowena got up, which allowed Dani to run over to Max. Rowena then walked back towards Emily Binx's grave to check on Thackery, only to find him laying motionless atop the grave. Rowena knelt by the grave and carefully lifted Thackery's cat body into her arms.
"Rest in peace, old friend. You're finally free." Rowena said softly. Meanwhile, Billy was climbing back into his grave, ready to go back to sleep. Thankfully, the circle of salt around the grave had been broken by the soft morning breeze.
"Bye Billy, have a nice sleep." Dani said.
"Hey, Billy. Thanks." Max said. Billy gave a nod, before yawning and falling backwards into his grave, causing Dani to giggle a little bit before she looked around.
"Where's Binx? Binx? Binx?" Dani called, before spotting Rowena holding him.
"He's gone, Dani." Rowena said.
"But he can't die remember. Wake up, Binx. Binx, wake up. Like last time." Dani said, tears falling from her eyes. Then, the group heard a voice.
"Dani. Come on, please don't be sad for me." Thackery's voice spoke, causing them all to look up to see Thackery's spirit standing there. He was back in his human form.
"Binx, is that you?" Dani asked.
"Yeah. The witches are dead, my soul's finally free. You freed me Dani, thank you. Hey Max, thanks for lighting the candle. Don't be too hard on Rowena for not telling you her full history." Thackery said.
"I'm glad your curse is finally broken, my old friend." Rowena said, carefully laying Thackery's cat body back atop Emily's grave.
"Me too. Thank you for keeping me company for all those years, Rowena. And something tells me you'll get to see Sarah again one day. I could see how hard it was for you to leave her when you had to help Dani." Thackery said.
"I hope I will see her again some day. And say hello to your family for me when you see them." Rowena said.
"Thackery! Thackery Binx!" A young girl's voice called, causing them to turn and see the ghost of Emily Binx nearby.
"It's Emily." Thackery said, looking thrilled, before he looked back at Dani.
"I shall always be with you." Thackery told her, kissing her cheek before he turned and walked towards his sister, though he did turn to wave at the group one last time.
"Thackery Binx, what took thee so long?" Emily questioned.
"I'm sorry, Emily. I had to wait three hundred years for a virgin to light a candle." Thackery said. He took his sister's hand, and the two of them walked through the gates to heaven and vanished from sight. It was only then that Rowena allowed a few tears to escape her eyes. Losing her lover and one of her closest friends in the span of a few minutes hurt more than she'd thought it would, and it also left her feeling rather empty inside. Allison noticed this first, so she gave Rowena a hug.
"It's okay to be upset. You loved Sarah, so losing her again is going to be painful. You also knew Binx a lot longer than we did, so that's more pain. But you don't have to be alone anymore. You have us now." Allison said, earning a smile from Rowena.
"Even though I am a witch in possession of powerful magic?" Rowena questioned.
"You still helped us against the Sanderson sisters. And besides, you being a witch doesn't matter to us. No one can help who they love. What you and Sarah had was definitely something special." Max said.
"I suppose you're both right. Now, we'd better get going. I imagine your parents will be getting home soon. Winifred's spell on the party-goers should've been broken with her death." Rowena said, using her magic to bury Thackery's cat body in a small grave beside his sister's and marking it with a small wooden cross. Together, the four of them left the cemetery. All of them knew that no one would believe the story of what happened, so it was something they could keep between the four of them, and no one else had to know any different. And if they had to admit, it was probably going to be better that way. They had each other now, and that was what mattered.
