Chapter 4

3rd Person P.O.V

After escaping the Sanderson House, the three teens and one cat arrived outside the cemetery.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. This is a graveyard." Max said.

"It's hallowed ground. Evil witches can't set foot here." Thackery told them, much to the shock of Dani and Allison.

"He talks." Max said, as if that explained everything.

"Follow me." Thackery jumped through the gap between the bars, leaving the kids no choice but to follow him.

"Over here. I want to show you something. Give you an idea of exactly what we're dealing with." Thackery said, leading them over to the grave of Billy Butcherson.

"William Butcherson? Lost Soul?" Max read what was engraved in the stone.

"Billy Butcherson was Winifred's one-time lover. The stories say that she caught him sporting with her sister, Sarah, so she poisoned him and sewed his mouth shut with a dull needle so he couldn't tell her secrets even in death. But that's not quite the truth. Billy did like Sarah, but Sarah's heart already belonged to another. In fact, it was Billy's own family who were responsible for his death, as they did not like the fact he got involved with the Sanderson Sisters." Thackery explained.

"You're Thackery Binx." Allison realised.

"Yes." Thackery confirmed.

"Wait, you said Sarah's heart already belonged to another. What do you mean by that?" Allison said. Thackery led them to a second grave, this one bearing the name 'Rowena Pendragon'.

"Rowena Pendragon was the town healer, and was a close friend of my parents. She knew the Sanderson Sisters from childhood. Rowena and Sarah were lovers from 1665 up until Sarah's death in 1693, though the Salem townsfolk were kept in the dark. Only Winifred, Mary, Billy and my parents knew the truth. I found out because she was there the night I was cursed into this form. Rowena was a known white witch, so her magic was good. In 1670, one of her spell creations backfired and she became immortal. Of course, the townsfolk eventually did find out the truth about her and Sarah shortly after that fateful night in 1693, but my family spread the rumour that Rowena was bewitched by Sarah, and the spell was only lifted after Sarah and her sisters were killed. A year later, Rowena asked my family to spread the rumours of her death, supposedly caused by being bewitched since 1665. She aided my family in faking her death, as her immortality was a secret known only to the Sanderson Sisters and my family, and then she left Salem. She didn't want to remain in the place her lover had died only a year prior. She fled to Europe, though she returned every Hallow's Eve to keep me company. She eventually returned to Salem for good in 1990, under the guise of being her own descendant, and set up her pharmacy to continue her prior occupation of being a healer." Thackery told them the story.

"Wait, so the Rowena Pendragon who owns Pendragon Pharmacy, is the same Rowena Pendragon who dated Sarah Sanderson? Now all that stuff she told us earlier makes so much more sense, especially when she said there was more to the story that a lot of people knew, and the immortality thing." Allison said. Thackery led them over to a third grave, which belonged to his little sister.

"There's more. Because of me, my little sister's life was stolen on Hallow's Eve night in 1693. For years I waited for my life to end, so I could be reunited with my family. But Winifred's curse of immortality kept me alive. I was lucky to have Rowena as a companion during those three hundred years. Then one day I figured out what to do with my eternal life. I'd failed Emily, but I wouldn't fail again. When Winifred and her sisters returned, I'd be there to stop them. So for three centuries, I guarded the house on All Hallow's Eve, when I knew some airhead virgin might light that candle." Thackery said.

"Nice going, airhead." Dani said, looking at Max.

"I'm sorry, okay? But we're talking about three ancient hags versus the 20th century, how bad can it be?" Max asked.

"Bad. Stay out of there!" Thackery answered, directing the second half at Allison when he saw her about to look inside the spellbook.

"Why?" Allison asked.

"It holds Winifred's most dangerous spells. She must not get it." Thackery told her.

"Let's torch the sucker." Max said, taking the book and dropping it to the ground. He then tried to use the lighter to burn it, only for the flames to be repelled.

"It's protected by magic." Thackery said. Just then, they heard laughter, causing them to look up and see the Sanderson Sisters hovering above them on broomsticks.

"It's just a bunch of hocus pocus." Winifred mocked Max's earlier words, before directing her sisters either way to try and surround the group.

"Book! Come to mummy." Winifred said. The book started to float off the ground, but Thackery jumped on top of the book.

"'Fraid not." Thackery said.

"Thackery Binx, you mangy feline. Still alive?" Winifred already knew the answer, as she had been the one to curse him to live forever.

"And waiting for you." Thackery said.

"You have waited in vain. You will fail to save your friends, just as you failed to save your sister." Winifred said. Thackery hissed at her in response. Max grabbed the book before he, Allison and Dani started running and trying to evade the sisters.

"They can't touch us here, right?" Max asked.

"Well, they can't." Thackery answered.

"I don't like the way you said that." Dani said.

"Unfaithful lover, long since dead. Deep asleep in thy wormy bed. Wiggle thy toes, open thine eyes. Twist thy fingers towards the sky. Life is sweet, be not shy. On thy feet, so sayeth I." Winifred cast a spell. The ground began to rumble as the ground where Billy Butcherson was buried began to rise up. Seconds later, Billy, now a zombie, burst from his coffin, causing the group of friends to scream and run away.

"Hi. Hello Billy." Sarah said, then noticed the gravestone a short distance away. While Winifred commanded an annoyed-looking Billy to chase the kids, Sarah flew a little closer to the other gravestone, and almost fell off her broom in shock when she saw Rowena's name engraved in the stone.

"But she promised to wait. She promised." Sarah whispered sadly, before joining her sisters in flying out of the cemetery. Somehow it slipped Sarah's mind that Rowena was immortal, and it didn't cross her mind that Rowena might have faked her death all those years ago.
