Prolouge

A sunny day in the park seems normal. Nothing wrong with the two 5 year olds having a picnic.

The girl, hiding a box behind her, giggling as she refused to show the boy what was inside.

"Come on! Let me see!" the boy said, giggling with her. "You said it was important!"

"Hey! Not as important as all the cookies you left!" she exclaimed, using one free hand to pick up one of the burnt cookies and shove it in his mouth.

The boy grumbled, spitting out the offending cookie. "Thats no fair! Your cookies are burnt..."

The girl giggled once again. "All right," she said, taking out the box and opening it, revealing two broken heart lockets, meant to be put together.

"These are promise lockets. I promise I'll marry you when we're older!" the girl said, taking it as a joke.

Little did she know he thought she meant it.

He was in shock, his eyes watering a little. "This..." he said, taking one of them in his hands as if it was the most precious gem on earth -- one wrong move and it'll shatter.

He looked at her, grinning ear to ear although he had started crying. "Thank you..." he mumbled, wearing the locket and swearing he'll never let it leave his sight.

The girl, happy that he took it well, took the other half and wore it.

They both hugged. The boy thought this moment was the best moment in his life. The girl believed they would make better as friends.

He thought she just promised herself to him.

And he was willing to do the same.

Carlos had his suitcase, ready to board the train with his parents. Mariya was running to him.

"Carlos! Wait!" she yelled, tears flying behind her until she reached him.

"Mariya? I thought you had dance class," Carlos said, holding her in a hug to comfort her.

"That isn't important! You are!" she said, tears streaming down her face. Carlos hated each tear that soaked through his coat.

"You'll see me again, though..." he said, smiling hopefully although she cried.

"You don't know that! Don't lie!" she said, fearing that she'd never see her beloved friend again.

"Of course I won't. Just like you won't lie to me..." he said, pulling back to look at his tear-filled beloved. "Have I ever lied to you?"

"No..." she admitted sadly.

The boys Father told him it was time to go, and he was forced to board the train, but he waved out the window to her.

"I'll be back!" he shouted as the train started moving.

Mariya started running after it. "Promise?!" she shouted after him.

"Promise!" he shouted back. "We'll have that future you promised..." he said to himself as the train out-ran her.

"I'll do whatever it takes."
