Chapter 9

Fruity pebbles gets too soggy too quickly like wtf that's nasty. And that's my cereal review of the day

~~

I woke up, getting dressed into a pink skater style skirt and a white shirt tucked into it. I grabbed my new shoes the others had given me for my birthday and slipped my feet into them. But then my eyes watered as I looked down at them.

"What's wrong, baby boy?" Frank asked.

"I-I don't know how to tie my shoes," I whimpered

Frank smiled, kneeling down in front of me.

"You make a knot then make two little bunny ears," he instructed. "Cross them over, push one under a pull."

I smiled happily as he tied my shoes for me.

"Thank you, daddy," I said, giving him a kiss. "I'll see you later?"

"Of course," Frank said.

I gave him another soft kiss before going to the kitchen, smiling as I watched the shoes light up when I hopped down the stairs. I ate a bagel for breakfast before we left for school.

"When is Pete's baby going to be finished growing?" I asked.

"I don't know, Gee, we might not keep the baby," he said.

I frowned in confusion. "Th-the baby will stop growing?"

Mikey nodded and I bit my lip.

"How's that's happens?" I asked.

"It's complicated," Mikey said. "But we don't know if we are yet so don't tell people, okay?"

"How's it's complicated?" I asked.

"They make the baby go away," he said.

"Like on vacation?" I asked.

"Sort of," Mikey said.

"That's nice," I said. "Ray went on a vacation one time, he went to this place called Ba...um, I forgot what it's called."

"Bahamas?" Mikey guessed.

I gasped and nodded. We got to the school and I smiled as I walked up to Ray and Ryan.

"I see you're wearing the new shoes," Ray remarked. "How do you like them?"

"They're so pretty and comfortable," I said.

"Looking good, hot stuff," Ryan said.

I giggled, stomping my foot lightly to make it light up.

"Come on, let me walk you to class," Ray said.

I nodded, hugging my blankie. Someone always walks me to class ever since the bullying got worse. A few days after Frank died some guys beat me up and it really hurt. I was already hurting because of Frank but that only made me worse.

"I saw my Mama," I said.

"Oh really? How was that?" Ray asked.

"It was really good, I missed her a lot," I said. "I get to see her again soon if Miss Williams says I'm good."

"Well, I hope you have fun seeing her," he said.

"I can't wait until she gets out, we're gonna have so much fun together," I said.

"I bet," he said. "Just be careful, okay? Already lost Frankie, I don't want anything to happen to another friend."

"Why would I get hurt with my Mama?" I asked.

"Not hurt, exactly," he said. "Just don't want you to go missing again like you were when you were a few months old."

"Would you miss me?" I asked.

"Everyone would miss you," he said. "Imagine how your dad would feel losing you for the second time after he finally got you back."

I frowned, thinking about how Mama said we would go away. That didn't seem fair for my dad.

"Ms. Iero too," Ray added. "She really likes you, you know that? Like a second child almost. She'd be really upset if you left too. She loves you, she thinks you're the cutest little kid in the world."

I giggled as we got to my classroom. I noticed a poster on the wall and frowned in confusion.

"What is a prom?" I asked.

"It's a school dance," Ray said. "Everyone dresses all fancy and dances."

I looked at him and gasped. "It's like a princess ball?"

"Yeah, like a princess ball," he agreed as he smiled.

"I wanna go!" I exclaimed, tugging on his sleeve. "Please, Ray, pretty please can I go to the princess ball?"

"It's your choice, Gee," Ray said as he laughed. "You gonna ask someone for a date?"

"I have to bring my own prince?" I asked.

"Well, you don't have to but most people do," Ray said.

"Can Mikey be my prince?" I asked.

"I don't know if he's going, but if he is going he's probably going with Pete," Ray said.

I bit my lip sadly as I looked down.

"I'll go with you," he offered.

"Really?" I asked excitedly. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"

I jumped, giving him a big hug.

"And I get a princess dress?" I asked.

"Yes, you can wear a princess dress," Ray said. "You've gotta go to class now, see you later?"

I smiled and nodded as he walked off. I walked into class but couldn't possibly sit still the entire time. Even after school at tutoring, work, and therapy I couldn't wait.

"Mikey! I get to go to the princess ball!" I exclaimed, walking into his bedroom where he and Pete were talking.

"The what?" Mikey asked.

"You know, the prom," I said.

"That's nice, Gee," He mumbled.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Nothing, I'm just stressed," he said, laying back on his bed.

"Because Pete's growing a baby?" I asked.

"Growing a baby, okay, that sounds weird," Pete said.

"Mikey says the baby might go on vacation," I said.

Pete looked over at Mikey with raised eyebrows.

"Gee, isn't it almost bedtime?" Mikey asked.

"Im not tired," I said. "Where is the baby going?"

"Gee, you wouldn't understand," Mikey said.

"When will I get to see the baby?" I asked.

"You won't," Mikey stated.

I frowned, my eyes watering.

"B-but I wanna see the baby," I whimpered.

"We don't know if the baby's going on vacation yet," Pete said.

"Is your baby in your tummy right now?" I asked.

Pete nodded, grabbing my hand. He placed it on his stomach underneath his shirt.

"Can baby hear me?" I asked.

"Not yet, unfortunately," Pete said. "They haven't grown ears yet."

"Is it growing like a plant?" I asked.

"In a way," Pete replied, smiling softly. "Mikes, come here."

Mikey sighed before sitting up.

"Hey, it's gonna be okay," Pete whispered, kissing his cheek.

"I know but I'm just worried," Mikey said. "I don't really wanna send the baby on vacation but how are we supposed to raise it?"

"I don't want the baby to go on vacation either," Pete said. "My mom will help us out, we still have a bunch of old baby toys and clothes and stuff."

"And we've got Gee's crib," Mikey added. "My dad put it into the basement when the police found him."

"So we're keeping the baby?" Pete asked.

Mikey nodded and I frowned as the two hugged each other tight while they cried.

"Why sad?" I asked.

"We're not sad, Gee, we're happy," Mikey said, pulling me into the hug.

I giggled, hugging them back.

"And you're gonna be an uncle," Mikey said.

"What's that?" I asked.

"Nothing," he replied with a small chuckle.

"Okay, I have to go now, I need to see Frankie," I said.

"It's too late to go to the cemetery," Mikey said.

"I'm not going to the cemetery, silly," I said as I giggled.

I walked out to my bedroom and shut the door, seeing Frank sitting on the bed. I sat in his lap, giving him a kiss.

"Daddy, you came to me right after you died," I said.

"That's right, baby," he said.

"Then why'd you leave for a while before coming back?" I asked.

"Because I had to do things," he said.

"Did you go to become an angel?" I asked.

He smiled and nodded, wrapping his arms around me.

"You went to angel school?" I asked.

"That's right, baby, I went to angel school," he confirmed. "And now that I'm an angel I could come back to you."

"And you're gonna stay with me forever?" I asked.

"Of course," he said.

"Yay, I don't wanna lose you again," I said. "But if Mikey's Mama is an angel then why don't she come see Mikey?"

"Because Mikey's mom is doing very important angel business," he said.

"Angel business?" I asked.

"That's right, she's got a very special job," he said. "She has to protect little kids who are orphans."

"What's orphans?" I asked.

"Orphans are people who don't have a mom or dad because they died," he said.

"And she's an angel protecting them?" I asked and he nodded. "Why don't you have angel business?"

"Because my angel business is to protect you," he stated. "Mikey already had his dad taking care of him so he didn't need his angel mom. But you needed me and I'm here for you."

"Good, I'd be so sad if you weren't here," I said. "What do you do at angel school?"

"Well, it's different for some people," he said. "Some people who knew they were going to die can go straight to being an angel. But people like me didn't know they were going to die."

"Did it hurt to die?" I asked.

"Kind of," Frank said. "I remember when I crashed, that was really painful. Everything was so blurry and disoriented and I could hardly move. I tried calling you but you didn't answer."

My eyes watered as I listened. Frankie tried calling me when he was hurt but I turned my phone off because I was mad at him.

"Your sight is the first sense to go when you die," Frank said. "I felt people laying me down on something. And then I couldn't feel or move, all I could do was listen. Your hearing is the last thing to go and all I heard was sirens, I was praying I'd hear your voice.

"And then I just sort of woke up somewhere. There was other people there too, we were all confused. They told us we died. I was devastated, I kind of ran away. It wasn't hard to find my way to you, we were destined for each other. I could only go to you. I got to see you for one last time before I had to go back to angel school.

"They taught us all sorts of things. But I had gotten in trouble for running away so I had to stay longer than everyone else. Which is why I had to wait two months before I could come back to you again."

"Like angel detention?" I asked.

"Yeah, baby, kinda like angel detention," he said.

"Will I go to angel school too?" I asked.

"Hopefully not for a while," Frank said.

"Can we go to angel school together?" I asked.

"I don't think so but maybe we can be together forever," he said.

"I wanna be an angel too," I said. "Do you have angel wings? I wanna see your angel wings!"

"Later if you're a good boy," he said and I nodded.

I rested my head on his shoulder, hugging him tight as I fell asleep.
