Chapter 14

I sobbed, trying to push away the man in the white coat.

"Gerard, I just need to listen to your heart," he said.

"No!" I cried.

"If you're good then you can have a lollipop," he said.

I stopped trying to fight him and let him listen to my heart through the funny ear thing.

"Wanna listen?" He asked.

The doctor put the ear things in my own ears and pressed the metal part to my chest. I giggled, listening to my heartbeat.

"Pretty cool, huh?" He asked and I nodded. "Just listen to this and I'll go talk to Donald."

"Is he my dad?" I asked.

"Yes, he is," he said.

The doctor went to the side of the room where my dad and another boy with blond hair was sitting.

"So, he's perfectly healthy for the most part," the doctor said. "However, he's low on some of his vitamins, but it's nothing too bad. The biggest probably is that he hasn't had his vaccinations."

"I do want him vaccinated," my dad said.

I held the metal part to my chest as I smiled.

"We could try to do it all right now but it'd probably be better to get a few done now and then schedule another appointment for later," the doctor said.

"We have a court date tomorrow, will he be okay for it?" My dad asked.

"He might have a headache or a stuffy nose but it shouldn't be too bad," he said.

My dad sighed and walked over, handing me Dee and taking away the ear thingy.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.

"For what's?" I asked.

The doctor came over with something in his hand.

"What's that?" I asked.

"This is called a syringe, Gerard," he said.

A cocked my head, looking at it in interest. He came closer and I shrieked when the pointy end went into my arm. My dad held me in place as I sobbed. The doctor finally pulled away but then he came back with another.

"No! No! Hurts!" I cried.

I gasped as I woke up sobbing. My Mama wrapped her arms around me and I cried into her shoulder.

"I don't want them to take me away again," I whimpered. "They hurt me last time."

"So you're gonna stay here forever, right?" She asked.

"Yes, Mama," I said.

"Gee, baby, you've been here for almost a week now, your dad is probably flipping out," Frank said. "We can go home together. I'll take you to the train station and we can go back home."

"I'm gonna stay here forever and ever," I said.

My mom smiled, holding me tight. I cuddled with her until it was morning and I yawned.

"Can I watch cartoons?" I asked as she made breakfast

"Cartoons will rot your brain," she said.

"B-but dad always lets me watch cartoons in the morning," I said.

"Cartoons are bad, Gee," she stated.

I scowled, crossing my arms.

"I don't want any attitude, Gee," she said. "No tv."

I huffed as she set a plate down in front of me.

"Gee, if you go home then you can watch cartoons," Frank said.

I bit my lip, shaking my head. I wanted to stay here with Mama. It was nice here, I loved it.

"No, Gerard, it's not nice here," Frank denied. "This is even shittier than the first place. Go home and you can cuddle up in your soft bed and you can see Ray and watch cartoons and eat ice cream and you can do whatever you want."

"Mama, can I go outside?" I asked.

"No, Gee, it's dangerous," she said.

"But I miss it," I whimpered. "I-I wanna go to the park. I wanna be able to run around and play with the other kids again."

"No, Gerard," she denied. "There's monsters out there."

My eyes watered as I slowly ate my food.

"We can have so much fun here, Gee," she said.

"What are we gonna do?" I asked.

"We can color and play games," she said.

I sighed quietly, taking a bite of my food.

"Can Mikey come visit us here too?" I asked. "I'm gonna miss him being away for so long."

"Who's Mikey?" She asked.

"He's my brother," I said. "And I will miss Ray too. He's always so nice to me. And I kissed him and then I punched him and he didn't even care because he's just so nice. I like him a lot, even as much as Frankie."

"You won't be able to see them anymore," she said.

"B-but I'm gonna miss them," I whimpered.

"They aren't that important, Gee," Mama said.

I looked down sadly, finishing my breakfast.

"If you go home you can see them," Frank said.

"How do I get Frankie to stop talking?" I asked. "He keeps telling me to go home but I wanna stay here with you, Mama."

"Don't listen to him, he doesn't know what he's talking about," Mama said. "He's just dumb."

"That's a mean word, Mama," I said.

She cleaned up our plates and I watched sadly. I'm never gonna get to see any of them again? I'm gonna miss them.

"Can't you move in with us?" I asked. "We can share my bedroom."

She shook her head.

"I'm going to go take a shower," she said.

I watched her go to the bathroom and I sighed quietly. Frank wrapped his arms around me as my eyes watered.

"I miss them already," I said. "I haven't seen them in an entire week."

"Come on, let's go call someone," he said.

Frank took my hand and lead me to the door. I looked at it nervously before opening it and stepping inside. Frank went away as I walked up onto the street and looked around.

"Ask to borrow someone's phone," Frank said.

I looked around at all the people walking around as I whimpered nervously. They were all walking so fast and no one even seemed to notice me here. I played with the skirt of my dress anxiously as I watched everyone.

"E-excuse me, c-can I pwetty pwease use your phone?" I asked a nice looking lady leaning against the wall.

She had pretty blue hair and a pretty white dress.

"I-I wanna go back home to Mikey and Ray," I said.

The lady nodded and handed me her phone. I stared at the numbers for a moment.

"What's my dad's phone number?" I asked.

"I don't know, kid," she said.

I bit my lip, my eyes watering.

"Gee, I know you know it," Frank said. "Your dad made you learn his phone number and your address before your first day of school."

"I-I can't remember it," I whimpered.

"Call 9-1-1," Frank instructed. "The police will help you."

"No!" I exclaimed. "No monsters!"

The lady stared at me as the door behind me opened.

"Gerard! I told you you're not allowed outside!" My mom scolded.

She grabbed my arm roughly and I cried out in pain as she dragged me back inside.

"I wanna go home, Mama!" I cried.

"You are home," she stated.

I cried, grabbing my blankie.

"I want Mikey," I sobbed. "I don't wanna be here, I don't like it here."

"That's not very nice, Gerard," Mama said.

I curled up into a little ball, hugging my blankie. I heard her get up and leave as I sniffled.

"It's okay, baby," Frank whispered.

I opened my eyes as he kneeled beside me and held my hand.

"I wanna go back home," I said.

"I know, baby, maybe next time," he said softly. "I know you miss home so we're gonna get back there as soon as possible, okay?"

I nodded and he kissed my cheek softly. I crawled into his lap and snuggled up in his arms. My mom wasn't gone for long before she came back with a little bag.

"Wh-what's in there?" I asked.

"A homemade tattoo machine I borrowed from a friend," she stated.

"Tattoo?" I asked. "like Frankie's tattoos?"

She didn't say anything and I missed Frank's touch as she kneeled down beside me. My Mama grabbed my arm and I tried to pull away out of fear. I closed my eyes and screamed as she tattooed along my forearm.

"Baby, just think about something else, try to ignore all of this," Frank said. "Think about your favorite moment that we had together."

I made Dee walk up Frank's arm and made her kiss his cheek.

"She likes you," I said.

Frank smiled, giving Dee a kiss.

"I like her too," he said.

"If you like me can I have kissies too?" I asked.

Frank nodded, giving me a soft kiss. I giggled, snuggling against him.

"I'm going to the store, Frank," Ms. Iero said. "You two be good, don't start any fires."

She kissed both the tops of our heads and I giggled. When she left, Frank pulled out a cigarette and a lighter but I grabbed it from him.

"What are you doing?" He asked, the cigarette still in his mouth.

"She said no fires," I stated.

"Bic lighters are okay," he said.

I watched him light up the cigarette and he blew out smoke.

"Icky, daddy," I said.

"You don't like?" He asked.

"Smells," I said, holding my nose.

Frank chuckled, stubbing the cigarette out in the ashtray. He pressed his lips to mine and I frowned, pulling away.

"Mouth icky too," I said. "Brush teeth."

Frank laughed as I pulled him upstairs. I watched him brush his teeth, smiling happily. He pressed his lips against mine when he was finished.

"Clean," I said.

"God, you're the cutest fucking thing in the world," Frank said.

I giggled, wrapping my arms around him as he held me tight.

I looked down when my mom finished the tattoo. My eyes filled with tears and lip quivered as I saw she had written 'MONSTER' in big, angry, thick letters across my left forearm.

"You were being a monster, Gee," she stated.

It hurt so badly, I didn't want a tattoo. I sobbed, feeling her hug me tight as I clutched my arm to my chest.
