Mock-Battle
"Up and at 'em lazy bones!" I heard a shout next to my ear and bolted up, almost smacking my head on the bed rung above me.
"Lukkas!" I groaned into my pillow. "Why would you ever do that? What time is it?"
"It's only three."
"We don't have to be up for another hour!" I protested, rolling into my back. Lukkas was hanging upside down from his bed, arms dangling.
He silently dropped down and pushed me over, laying on top of the covers next to me.
"I know." he said, crossing his arms behind his head. "I just wanted to talk to you."
"Lukkas." I rolled over, meeting his eyes.
"Yeah?" he smiled.
I waited a few moments. His eyes were focused on mine, for once not blinking rapidly, completely calm. His mouth bent up into a smile that creased his eyes. His blonde hair was matted from sleeping.
"Do not ever wake a girl up before she wants to be woken up." I turned my back towards him and yanked the sheets away so he fell off the bed and landed with a loud 'Kaplunk'.
"Rain!" he whined from the floor.
"What are you two doing over there?" Chad leaned over his rail looking down at us. I could see a faint grin.
"Nevermind. I don't want to know." he lifted his eyebrows.
"I'm going to kill you Chad." Lukkas brushed himself off.
"You? And what army?" we heard him scoff, causing Lukkas to shake his head.
"W-why is everyone aw-wake?" Holly yawned.
"Good question." Sky's head popped out of the bathroom. I hadn't even known she was there. "Why are you guys awake?"
"Is everyone awake?" I asked exasperated.
"Gib? Are you awake too?" Chad dropped down and ruffled his covers. "He isn't here. Guess he's awake." Chad shrugged.
"Lets go find him," Lukkas suggested.
We all got dressed and slowly opened the door.
"All clear," Chad whispered.
"Then why are you whispering?" Lukkas asked, stepping into the hall.
Chad rolled his eyes and followed us out as we walked through the noiseless cafeteria.
"There he is." Sky whispered, pointing at the weight room. We all stopped as we saw Gib standing in an orange workout tank top, lifting a weight that had to be 150lbs.
Sky pushed open the door and we all entered without Gib turning towards us.
We waited for him to set the weights down to start talking.
"How did you do that Gib?" Sky asked surprised.
"Yeah if you can lift that much you should be awesome at fighting." I realized.
"I am. I just hate attention." he shrugged.
"Bet you still couldn't beat me." Chad teased.
"I probably could." he replied.
"Anyways..." Sky said, steering the conversation away from fighting - very unlike her.
"Who's ready for our first Mock-Battle?" she grinned. That's more like it.
"Eh."
"I don't know."
"Lets do it I guess."
Chad, Lukkas and I responded at once. Sky rolled her eyes at our sarcasm and walked over to a pair of weights.
"Guess we're working out." Chad shrugged.
. . .
"Shhh. I think I heard something." Lukkas whispered next to me.
I nodded, surveying the area and notching an arrow.
"There." He nodded his head to the corner of a building where a flash of blue had appeared.
I drew the bow, crouching and steadying myself a rainy the railing of the catwalk.
Just when my lungs started to burn from holding my breath the blue flash into veiw, pointing a bow at us.
I released instantly and watched my arrow whiz by his ear. Another arrow hit his leg and he groaned in frustration.
"Good aim." Lukkas teased, dropping his bow.
"Shhh." I said, wanting him to be quiet. I motioned for him to follow me around a corner or the walk.
"What are you doing?" Lukkas asked, crouching behind me.
"Be quiet," I said, pressing my back against the wall and watching Lukkas hesitantly do the same.
I felt his arm tense up next to me and knew his was annoyed.
I turned to Lukkas. "Sorry, but we only need one more." I backpeddled away from him, pulling back my waxed string.
"Rain?" He let his guard down and made a move as if he were going to raise his hands in surrender.
A blue-clothed teenager sprung out from around the building, tackling Lukkas. They rolled into the ledge and Lukkas desperately tried to push himself away. The boy in blue way trying to heave him off the side when my red arrow hit his stomach.
"What?" he said, looking around. "No! He should have been the last one!"
"He wasn't." I shrugged, helping them both up.
"Well good game I guess." he rubbed the back of his neck and I could see the lettering on his arm. Winter.
He walked away from us as the building dissolved into an arena covered in panels to simulate the place were the Disruptors lived.
"You used me in a plan without telling me?" He asked, voice incredulous.
"He would have heard me speaking!" I protested.
Lukkas rolled his eyes and pulled me off the set with him. We headed towards our cheering friends who had already been eliminated.
"Way to go Rain!"
"You two sure do work in sync!" laughed Chad.
"Shut up Chad." We said in sync.
"Go team!" Zoe cheered, pumping a fist. "Who wants to go look at the rankings?"
After a chorus of 'yeses' we ran down the hall to the rankings board.
"Here it is!" Gib said, disappointment showing on his face.
We jogged down the long wall towards him, seeing Echo labeled as 29th.
"What?" Sky was furious. "How did we go backwards?"
"The other teams were faster, but we aren't last!" Zoe tried to sound happy but I'm pretty sure everyone saw through it.
"Don't worry, I'm sure we will improve." Lukkas assured Sky who looked devastated.
She nodded and we all walked back to our dorm.
. . .
"How about you Sky?" I said into the dark.
"Me? Well... He's great. He's everything. He's competitive like me but can laugh it off when I beat him. And he's happy. I think thats what I love most about him."
"Chad?" I heard Lukkas ask.
"You want to hear about my soulmate?" I could almost hear him smile. "He's adorable. He's an adorable nerd. He corrects my grammar and spelling and makes jokes that he has to explain to me. I wouldn't let anyone do anything to harm him. Zak." His voice hardened with determination at the end.
"Holly?"
"H-his name is J-jacob. And he l-loves talk to me. H- he never j-j-judges me. I couldn't l-live without him." she said softly.
"Gib?"
"Lila. I married her maybe three months ago. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about her and her safety. There isn't a day I miss her smile. There isn't a day I don't miss her laughing at my jokes. There isn't a day she tells me I'm annoying. There isn't anything without Lila."
Gib almost spoke like what he was saying we're complete facts, that no one could ever change, which made his love admiring.
"Rain?"
"Yeah?"
"What do you think Hudd is up to?" Lukkas' eyes peered over the edge of the bed.
"Fancy crop supervising." I snorted and rolled over.
"Do you think he misses you?" His question hung, like it was being held up by the king of awkward questions.
"No, he probably found his soulmate by now and realized he loves her."
"You're probably right."
I fell asleep not convinced of my own answer.
I feel like
1) I have been writing this chapter forever.
2) I seriously to change the scenary and find some action packed ideas.
3) Stop forshadowing because it seems super obvious.
And we skip four because four sucks
5) Did you know Iceland is the only country without any mosquitos?
