Fighting
"What about you? What got you here Quinn?" Asked Corwin.
We were sitting on the cafeteria floor, scarfing down good as fast as possible. Corwin had said he needed to show us something else so we had better eat quickly. I figured it was better than sitting around all day doing nothing so I heeded his advice.
"I wanted to see what was outside the Gates. I had to know and got caught because of it." He grimaced.
"It's okay man, you're better off with us." Veeno assured him, stuffing another sardine in her mouth.
Quinn nodded silently.
"What about you Lila?" Corwin casually bumped her shoulder. I hadn't told anyone else about what I saw last night, but I figured they'd figure it out themselves.
"My old 'soul mate'." She snorted. "He sold me out. He had always told me there was a better world but I never listened. Guess throwing me in a jail was easier than dealing with me." Her expression turned dad and I saw her finger brush the name on her left arm.
"He knew about this place?" Corwin asked, confused.
"Yeah that doesn't make sense." Added Chad, mouth full. "I never thought about what was out here."
"I don't know. Gib just told me he knew a few things and I figured-"
"Gib?" we heard three voices almost yell at us.
"What?" Lila asked.
"Gib's my younger brother. And the only reason he is over there is because they kidnapped him when he was younger." Bit explained, setting his food down quietly. "I guess he was too young to remember what freedom of mind was like." He shrugged, acting like he didn't care.
"Gib is a Disruptor?" Lukkas asked, still processing information.
Even though most of Lukkas' memory had been jogged he wasn't back to normal. He talked slower and didn't joke around as much, which I guess made sense. I still missed the old Lukkas though.
"Yeah. I guess he believed all their shit." Bit shrugged again.
Looking at Bit's shoulders I could see how tense he was - especially since Bit was normally relaxed. There were slight traces of irritation on his face. No way he was okay.
"Well guess that was a... Um." O heard Lukkas mutter next to me.
"Twist?" I suggested, watching him nod with his eyes closed.
"I hate not being myself." I heard him say through his hands.
Before I could reply, Corwin spoke up. "Alright, now time for something awesome." Corwin pulled Lila up with him and we all followed suit.
"Come on, maybe this will cheer you up."
Lukkas didn't respond, but stood anyway.
"Through here." Corwin said with a grin, pulling open two large, metal trapdoor laying on the ground outside the Drop. How I didn't notice them I have no clue.
Lukkas have me an odd look, but I shrugged and dropped down, feeling a latter with my foot.
Reaching the bottom, I looked around. It was a large area, larger than the cafeteria. The lights were almost off and it was jam packed with people who were either yelling or singing to the blaring music. Through arms I could see a ropes off section in the middle, an arena of sorts.
"Looks great doesn't it?" Veeno yelled over the noise.
"Sure does!" I responded, starting to get a headache.
Chad and Zoe dropped next to me, glancing and squinting in the darkness.
Veeno and Corwin lead the way towards the ropes off section where two figures seemed to be fighting.
After looking at who was fighting, I saw Veeno, Bit, and Corwin sign a small booklet.
"Betting." Corwin explained. "Not for money, but bragging rights. More fun than it sounds."
I nodded, still overwhelmed.
"So who wants a turn?" He grinned, nodding towards the arena.
"Hard pass." I muttered.
"I'll go." Said Sky, eyes locked on the rink.
"Are you kidding me?" Bit laughed. "You're tiny. And a girl."
Chad glanced up, wide eyed, stepping away from Bit. Lukkas and Zoe did the same.
"Big mistake." I told him before shrinking back with the other who knew how scary Sky could be.
"Fine. I'll go with you Butt." Sky's voice was even.
"It's actually Bit." He corrected.
Sky spun around with gold balls for eyes. "My gosh? Do you see them?" She asked, horrified.
"See who?"
"Someone who gives a damn. Because I don't."
I lifted an eyebrow in her direction, but I only got a sky wink.
"This otta be great." Chad laughed. "Can't wait to see this."
"Yeah." I agreed.
After an hour, Bit and Sky were able to get into the ring and were squaring. Both had replaced their tee shirts with tank tops. Bit's tank top had a metal screw on it. Screw Bit.
I saw Bit's arm jab out quicker than I expected for him. It caught Sky's forehead and she stumbled back, lost her footing, and fell.
Bit, confused, got down on a knee to offer his hand.
"And game over for him." Chad grinned. I knew what he was talking about as he had the same thing happen to him. I want sure Sky could pull it off with someone older than her.
I watched Sky grab wrists with Bit, letting him pull her up. I could see her smile at him while he awkwardly stood.
Sky's free arm darted to Bit's shoulder, shoving it towards the ground. In a quick move he arm was flat on his back as he was flat on the floor.
"Sorry, I forgot." I could barely hear her yell over the cheering. "You're a boy."
I laughed, clapping for Sky's win.
They both exited and people handed them water bottles.
"Sorry about that." I heard But apologize. "Guess you can't judge a book by its cover." He smiled.
Wondering what a book was, I turned to Corwin to ask. He was no where to be seen. How odd that I couldn't find Lila either. What a coincidence.
I turned back to the conversation.
"Yeah don't think I'm going to forgive you." She muttered, storming off.
"I think I'm gonna go." Chad said, eyeing the ring. A talking man was standing there, egging people on.
"I'm going to go take a break. Headache." I told him as him nodded.
I climbed the latter, freeing myself from the noise.
"Hey." But looked up from his spot in he hall.
"You okay?" I asked, sliding over to him.
"To be honest, no." He sighed. "I didn't know Gib was corrupt like them. I should've expected it, growing up there." He said bitterly.
I had been talking about the fight, but whatever.
"Took me by surprise. He was always so nice." I put a hand on his shoulder.
"You knew him? What was he like?"
"He's strong. And he looks a lot like you." I replied, wishing I had gotten to know him better, even if he was a brainwashed zombie.
"I should have stopped them. It's my fault." He sighed, putting his head in his hands.
"No, it's the Senator's fault." I assured him. "And besides, maybe he'll listen to reasoning."
Bit propped his head up, searching my eyes. His gaze dropped.
"Look I shouldn't be telling you this but the community is planning something big. And Corwin and the other higher ups want to stop them. It's going to be a war."
"A war? Like one of the World Wars?" I asked.
We never had arguments in the community, no fighting. Unless it was sparring obviously.
"Yeah, but smaller scale." He confirmed.
"Thanks for telling me at least." I whispered, trying to keep my voice calm.
He nodded. "Anytime." His finger brushed mine on the floor.
"I've got to go." I said quickly, standing.
"Oh. Uh okay." Bit said awkwardly. "Sorry if I scared you."
"It's okay. And I'm not scared." I assured myself more than Bit.
"Want me to walk you back?" He asked.
"No!" I said quickly, startling us both. "I mean, no. Thanks. But, no I'll be fine."
"Okay." He muttered.
I walked back alone, flopping onto the bed.
Was it cheating if it wasn't my fault? I'm not sure it even was a moment. Maybe it was an accident. I'm making a huge deal out of this.
And besides, Lukkas wasn't my soul mate so it didn't really matter.
I haaaaaaaaave a migraine. Probably because I don't get nearly enough sleep. Low serotonin level baby!
Not to be rude, but I may sort of be bored right now, I know, I know.
But I have a solution! You know the saying save the drama for your mama? Well what if I don't do that? Eh? Good idea? Too bad you don't get a choice homie.
