Eyes
I watched Lukkas fade. Literally and figuratively. I watched his figure shrink until an abrupt and sharp jerk upwards stopped his descent for a millisecond as his parachuted caught him. That small motion almost made me feel closer to him.
He struggled with his gun before its swaying barrel found its mark. The bullet hit the Senator almost square in the throat from the way she jerked back. But my eyes had left her.
I watched as Lukkas's body convulse quietly as dozens of bullets and the odd arrow struck him. The chuete continued its downward spiral even though it's luggage was immobilized, limp, dead.
My heart didn't break. It didn't split or tear like some people claim happens when a lover leaves them. No, my heart wasn't broken. It was gone.
I would never see him smile again. I'd never fall asleep curled up next to him. We'd never spar. I wouldn't ever see his blinking blue eyes, terrified of losing me. Terrified of leaving me.
I couldn't speak, couldn't move from my place. It was like I was part of the Flyer, build strongly along with it, not meant to be separated.
"We're landing soon." Monti cleared his throat. For once the mischevious pilot was quiet. Even he had a limit to his smiles.
I remember nodding the same way I don't. I knew I did but couldn't remember the actual task. Details were disappearing with the seconds that followed them. Although everything was just a detail now.
"Yeah," I said softly, grip find my bow. If Lukkas was going to be dead then I'd do what he'd ask. Robin was going to live, no matter what, many expense.
"I'll cover you." Quinn muttered, eyes low. I had almost forgotten how Lukkas and Quinn were friends too. How selfish could I get, believing that I was the only one upset?
I held an arrow in place with my pointer and middle finger, keeping the string relaxed. Earth moved towards us. Dust came to greet us as I stepped off the Flyer.
I snuck around the side of the craft, watching for enemies. Orange had yet to seek me out, even if they knew I was here.
I kept low and tightened my grip around the arrow fletching. I could still hardly concentrate with Lukkas gone. He should have been right next to me, whispering some dumb joke. I'd kill for one more.
I took a hasty, shallow breath and kept moving. I snaked around the Gates, oddly seeing no one. Maybe they didn't see where the Flyer landed.
I was just inside the Housing District. I figured I had to get to wherever they had taken Lukkas and I after we were caught by Ally. Problem was, I had no clue where that was either.
Both times I had gone to and from the cells I had been unconscious. Since I couldn't have known what time of day it was, judging distance wasn't a possibility either.
Figuring that since Ally and the Senator had been relatively close to the school, I'd start there. It was likely that they would try to keep Robin close to them, but no close enough to cause trouble.
I stayed hiden under the cover of houses, trying to run whenever I was in sight. As sneaky as I may have felt, I probably didn't go unnoticed.
I had almost made it to the school when two kids slightly younger than I, fourteen maybe fifteen, came strolling around the corner.
The pair was laughing. They weren't strong, obviously not going anywhere in defense. They'd probably be normal field workers like there parents judging by tinte way their sleeves were rolled up.
"Hey you!" The taller of the two's nose crinkled. "Why aren't you in orange? And shouldn't you be fighting? You're old enough to have a job." He stated the obvious with the shorter boy nodded.
I realized that even if people didn't recognize me they'd still ask the same question. "I'm sick." I said, forcing a raspy voice. "And besides, " I pretended to cough. "I'm no good with a bow."
"That makes sense John." One nodded again to the taller.
"Yeah," John muttered. "I guess it does. If we were idiots."
I gulped. How did they know? It hit me. The scar, there was a scar labeling me a traitor, and enemy of otange, printed right on my forehead.
"I don't know what you're talking about." I smiled assuringly, taking a step closer and lowering my hands in a gueture of surrender.
"Yeah. You do." The taller one frowned, not recognizing that I was inching forwards in an aggresive manner. "You're the girl They were going to kill!" He remembered, snapping and looking up at me.
I lept at him, arms wrapping around his neck. I didn't have enough momentum to knock him over and he stumbled around as my arm choked him.
"John!" I heard the shorter one yell as his friend finally crumpled to the ground. I felt his muscles loosen and his breathing stop. I killed him. He wasn't a soldier and I killed him.
Something hit me over the back of the head and my face smacked the dirt. I whirled, seeing red on the top of my nose. The younger boy, obviously stronger, kicked my shin.
I grunted, punching his knee cap. I was about to stand and run when a startlingly familiar voice struck the air.
"Rain? The hell are you doing?"
"Fighting!" I screamed over my shoulder, hoping it was a friend as I still couldn't place the voice.
"Move!" He yelled as it clicked in my head.
It was someone I still trusted eight my life, so I did as instructed and tumbled to the ground.
I heard a quick whoosh and the accompanying thud of a lifeless body falling. For some reason I knew it well now.
I looked up, seeing and arrow through the kid's head.
"Come on we have to get Robin." A hand pulled me off the ground.
"Thanks. But you have some explaining to do." I laughed, hugging Gib.
"I know everything seems bad but we have to hurry." He said, leading me towards the woods.
"So why'd you turn Lila in?" I asked, pushing aside a branch as we ran.
"It's safer out there. Even if she would think I betrayed her, she would have been safer." He explained sadly, boi e breaking. "She's okay right?"
"If course. She stayed at mission control with the others."
"Good." He said huffing as we ran.
"And your brother misses you." I said, remembering Bit.
"Brother?" He asked. "I don't have a brother."
"Yeah You do. His name is Bit."
"I left him right up here," Gib muttered, ignoring me.
We reached a clearing, stopping and looking around.
"Robin?" I called out.
Gun headed over to a stocky tree, looking up. "Robin you can come down. It's just Rain and I."
"Rain?" I heard a voice perk up, followed by rustling.
My brother dropped to the ground, groaning as he landed. His chest was almost completely raw. He stumbled a little bit. There was a blue bandana tied around his eyes.
"Where is she?" He asked.
"I'm right here." I said confused, lightly touching his shoulder. Robin jumped, then pulled me into a hug.
"I knew you'd come. Gib said you'd come."
"Did you think I'd leave you with them?" I laughed. "And why is that bandana tied around your head?" I tugged at the back of it.
Robin's hand flew to keep it there. Gib stiffened up. "I don't want you to see." He said, voice steady.
"See what?" A sense a dread engulfed me, almost knowing the answer.
"My eyes." He spoke quietly, hiding his thumbs shyly in front if him. "They took my eyes."
I have to go quick, dog to walk, dog to return (long story) and yeah but no yes, I did, ha you deal with that think I covered everything.
Oh random piece of knowledge, right. Um, you walk past a murderer on average 36 times in your life, crazy man.
