An Old Friend
"Everyone ready?" Chad whispered as we pulled up to the Gates.
"Yeah." I responded, braking. "Good luck guys. Bring this poor soul back home."
"Will do." Zoe whispered, hoping out.
I watched my friends disappear from view into the dark. I sat back, checking my watch. 1:01 am. They had fourteen minutes to get the target out.
I sat back in the jeep and tawned, thinking about all that was happening.
How different life was here instead of in the community. How adorable Rinbo was. How cool Bit, Corwin, Veeno and Dr. W were. And especially how Lukkas wasn't my soul mate.
I had no clue how to cope with it. It just seemed like everything I had been holding onto crumbled. I finally got Lukkas back after a week of hearing how and to whom he was pledging loyalty and then I learn he might not even be the right guy for me.
I checked my watch again. 1:13. Crazy how time flies when you're questioning your life.
Not to mention Bit. About how he's Gib brother and how we... I mean he brushed my hand. Maybe it was an accident. Maybe it wasn't. I figured I would simply ignore it.
After a few more minutes of 'relaxation', I realized how long they were taking. It was almost 1:20 and there was no sign of Chad, Zoe, or Lukkas.
Suddenly, there was a brilliant flash of color in the sky. Blue sparks went flying. Before I could think, What the heck?, Chad and Zoe came sprinting out of the Gates with a squirming bag on their shoulders, Lukkas running backwards, pointing a bow behind the group.
"Let's go!" I heard Chad yell.
I started the jeep, driving closer to the rag tag group. An army of people in Orange stormed out of the Gates.
"What did you do?" I yelled as Zoe clambered in the back with Chad and the bag.
"Just go!" Lukkas yelled again as an arrow hit a leg and someone shouted in terror.
Lukkas grabbed the side of the jeep, picking up his legs. "Drive Rain!"
I hit the gas, foot almost sliding off. I turned the jeep, driving parallel to the Gates so Lukkas wasn't exposed.
Clambering into the jeep's roof, Lukkas shakily loaded another arrow. I heard another yelp of surprise but kept driving.
Suddenly, Lukkas swung into the passengers seat next to me.
"That was fucking awesome." Lukkas breathed, panting heavily.
"No! No it wasn't! You could have died!" I yelled over the screetching of the wheels.
"I could have died too!" A voice yelled.
"There's something we need to tell you." Lukkas rubbed his neck.
"What? Can it wait?"
"No. The target... Well it wasn't exactly a stranger."
"Rain!" Yelled Huddson, popping up from the bag. "I missed you!"
. . .
"I don't care! He can't be here!" I hissed.
"There's nothing we can or will do. Grow up and deal with it." Veeno whispered back.
"Woud you you even send me to do this? I could have jeaprodize the mission!"
"Rain, quit complaining because he isn't going anywhere. We needed him because our sources tell is he's aware that the community is corrupt, and we need every follower possible." Corwin growled. "Stop acting like a child and get over it."
The three walked away, rolling their eyes.
I whirled around. "Huddson. You need to understand, I'm with Lukkas and there's nothing you can do about it." I lied. "I'm meant to be with him, not you."
"Oh?" He said, wiggling his eyebrows. "I'm so sure you are. I mean, you being extremely distressed in this situation means you do have feelings for me still so..." He shrugged with a smirk.
"Alright we're going." Lukkas announced.
"Agreed." I said, heading to the doors.
"Sounds fun where to?" Huddson asked, following us.
"Not you." Lukkas said, turning and pushing Huddson away. Stay here. Go talk to Quinn."
We left the building, making sure Huddson wasn't following us. After a while, we reached the clearing.
"Rinbo! Come here boy!" Lukkas said, adding a low whistled that pierced the morning air.
We sat under a large tree as Rinbo bounded up to us. He switched between licking our faces, then finally settled, laying on top of our out stretched legs.
"Everything is moving so fast." Lukkas sqid, breaking the silence.
"Yeah. And to think had it so easy in the community." I laughed. My gaze dropped and eyes winded slightly as I realized my mistake. "Lukkas I'm sorry."
"Its okay." He said quietly, scratching Rinbo's ear. "Not your fault."
"Would talking about but make you feel better?" I asked.
"There's nothing to talk about. It is what it is, and it's in the past now." He mumbled.
"Alright, I understand. What do you think about Huddson being here?"
He sighed. "I don't like it, but you heard Core. Nothing we can do. And besides, the Senator will be mad about everything that's happened in the last month. We should focus on training."
"You miss the community?" I realized.
"No," Lukkas responded quickly. "I miss having order and structure. Its not like I miss being ignorant to music and animals like Rinbo."
"Music." I said quietly. "Corwin and the others seem so reliant on music. Its like their world revolves about it."
"Bit told me there was a time when everyone could listen to any music they wanted. And how there were animals everwhere, and about these places with books that you could take whenever you wanted."
I shook my head. "I still don't get what books are exactly."
"Like fairy tales, but much longer." He tried to explain.
"Sounds boring." I yawned, tired.
"Maybe not. You never know till you try."
"Maybe I'll read a book tomorrow." I said, yawning again and closing my eyes.
"You do that." Lukkas said quietly, squeezing my shoulder.
I smiled as my mind slipped from consciousness.
I know it's a short chapter but I wrote this at like four. In the morning. I obviously am publishing much later. You might be wondering why.
Here's why.
I am a victim of RMOWTW, or Random moments of wanting to write. I'll need to write at three in the morning to be able to sleep, but on there weekend when I'm sitting and noing nothing, no way I can get my thoughts into paper, or rather mobile phone.
Thus I'll write four chapter in one day then none for a week, which bugs me when I go to publish, as there is no way I could publish that randomly, even if it matches my writing momentum.
And it's a heck of a lot of fun to do this to people. Just letting you know that not I have completely finished the book and have an ending that everyone will hate makes me laugh at your frustration and hours of restleness of thinking how annoying I am (which I was born to do).
Aside from my creepy enjoyment of everyone being mad at because I have been successfully annoying, it's also because I forget.
I'll be upstairs in mi habatacion, doing whatever and be all like "dang I'm bored. Wish I had a story to write".
Then halfway through the day I'll randomly yell, "I DO HAVE SOMWTHING TO WRITE". Maybe not yell, but I'll stop what I'm doing.
Alright I think I'm rambling but that's okay because I'm not absent minded I just get distact- is that chicken noodle?
