5. The attack

Andrea and Amy were fishing in a little boat lake. Jim was digging what looked like graves. It was scaring me and making me nervous. Me and a few other from the camp walked over to Jim, who was still digging, to see what was happening. "Hey, Jim. Jim, why don't you hold up, all right? Just give me a second here, please?" Dad said to Jim. Andrea and Amy had finished fishing by now and walked over to us.

"What do you want?" Jim said. He really was scaring me Grace looked scared as well so I pulled her into a side hug.

"We're all just a little concerned, that's all." Dad said. What if some of us are gonna die. I hope nothing bad does happen.

"Dale says you've been out here for hours." Morales said. How many hours has it been?

"So?" Jim asked as if it wasn't obvious already.

"So why are you digging? Are you heading to China, Jim?"Dad said. I always wanted to go to China so I could walk the Great Wall of China but I know that it won't ever happen anymore.

"What does it matter? I'm not hurting anyone." Jim said. It does matter through what's happening and why is he digging these things in the ground. He kept digging in between his sentences.

"Yeah, except maybe yourself. Its a hundred degrees today. You can't keep this up." Dale said. Jim could get a heat stroke if it's this hot but at the end of the day it's his decision.

"Sure I can. Watch me." Jim said. He was scaring me now.

"Jim, they're not gonna say it so I will. You're scaring people. You're scaring my son, Shane's daughters and Carol's daughter." Lori said. Dad didn't even notice we were scared. Jim paused.

"They got nothing to be scared of." Jim said Lori just shrugged. "I mean, what the Hell, people? I'm out here by myself. Why don't you all just go and leave me the Hell alone?" Jim said. Jim scared me more than ever.

"We think that you need to take a break, okay? Why don't you go and get yourself in the shade? Some food maybe. I'll tell you what –maybe in a little bit I'll come out here. I'll help you myself. Jim, just tell me what it's about. Why don't you just go ahead and give me that shovel?" Dad said. What was this about? Jim shoved the shovel in the ground and looked at my dad.

"Or what?" Jim said. I hugged Grace harder because he was scaring us and even more.

"There is no or what. I'm asking you. I'm coming to you and I'm asking you, please. I don't want to have to take it from you." Dad said. I just want to find out what this is all about.

"And if I don't, then what? Then you're gonna beat my face in like Ed Peletier, aren't you? Y'all seen his face, huh? What's left of it. See, now that's what happens when someone crosses you." Jim said. He went back to digging. But it was true Ed's face was pretty much destroyed from when dad beat him up.

"That was different, Jim." Dad said. But dad beat him up because he was hurting Carol everyone saw the bruises.

"You weren't there. Ed was out of control. He was hurting his wife." Amy said.

"Exactly." I said speaking up. Jim put the shovel back in the dirt.

"That is their marriage. That is not his. He is not judge and jury. Who voted you king boss, huh?" Jim said. I could see Carol hugging Sophia in the corner of my eye.

"Jim, I'm not here to argue with you, all right? Just give me the shovel, okay?" Dad said but Jim just moved the shovel out of my dads reach.

"No no no." Jim said. Why did he want the shovel so much? My dad moved forwards while Jim on the other hand moved backwards.

"Just give me the – Jim!" Dad said. Jim swung the shovel trying to hit my dad with it but dad just tackled him to the ground. "Okay, shh shh." Dad said trying to get him to shut up.

"You got no right!" Jim said. As much as I felt bad for him he brought it on himself.

"Stop. Shh." Dad said.

"You got no right!" Jim said again. Dad flipped him over onto his stomach and pulled one of his arms around to his back.

"Jim, just stop it. Hey hey hey hey." Dad said to him.

"Don't!" Jim said. I looked away. Amy came over to us and gave us a hug. We were like her younger sisters she cared about us.

"Jim. Jim. Nobody's gonna hurt you. You hear me? Shh." Dad said. Amy was still hugging us because she knew we were scared of what was happening. I looked behind Amy and saw Jim pinned to the ground, panting and crying. "Jim, nobody is gonna hurt you, okay?" Dad said to Jim trying to calm him down.

"That's a lie. That's the biggest lie there is." Jim said. The biggest lie was when he told Lori that Rick was dead. Dad handcuffed Jim behind his back. Amy let go of the hug. "I told that to my wife and my two boys. I said it a hundred times. It didn't matter. They came out of nowhere. There were dozens of 'em. Just pulled 'em right out of my hands. You know the only reason I got away was 'cause the dead were too busy eating my family." Jim said that's when me and Grace broke down in tears and walked away leaving the scene.

~~~
Jim was tied up to a tree in front of us. Us being Carol, Sophia, Carl, Lori, me and Grace. We were sat at a table doing what we would be doing a school. Jim tried to talk to us but I blocked him out. "You're not scared now, are you?" Jim asked us. I shook my head along with Grace and Carl.
"No sir." Sophia said. We got back to working. I blocked Jim out again so I couldn't hear him.
~~~

"All right. Who wants to help me clean some fish, huh?" I heard my dad say.

"Sweet. Come on Y/N, Grace and Sophia." I got up out of my chair so did Grace.

"Stay with Carol, all right?" Lori said. We left and went to clean fish seeming as we didn't have anything better to do.

~~~
It was nightfall now and we were eating fish for dinner. Jim said that the reason he was digging holes was because of a dream he had. We were sat around the fire together. I was sat in between Amy and Grace. We were all laughing at something I can't remember what. "Pass the fish, please." Sophia said.
"Here you go." Carol said while passing the fish over to Sophia.
"Man o man, that's good. Whew. I miss this."Dad said chuckling.
"I've got to ask you, man. It's been driving me crazy." Morales said to Dale.
"What?" Dale said.
"That watch." Morales said. I knew what he was gonna say. It bugged me as well.
"What's wrong with my watch?" Dale said. Nothing was wrong with it.
"I see you every day, the same time, winding that thing like a village priest saying Mass." Morales said. Andrea pointed at Dale and nods in agreement.
"I've wondered this myself." Jacqui said.
"I have as well." I said to Dale.
"I'm missing the point." Dale said. I put a mouthful of the fish in savouring the flavour of it. This is gonna be the only nice meal we will only get. Ever.
"Unless I've misread the signs, the world seems to have come to an end. At least hit a speed bump for a good long while." Jacqui said.
"But there's you every day winding that stupid watch." Morales said.
"Time – it's important to keep track, isn't it? The days at least. Don't you think, Andrea? Back me up here." Dale said. Me and Andrea chuckled. Andrea didn't say anything. "I like – I like what, um, a father said to son when he gave him a watch that had been handed down through generations. He said, "I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire, which will fit your individual needs no better than it did mine or my father's before me; I give it to you not that you may remember time, but that you may forget it for a moment now and then and not spend all your breath trying to conquer it." Dale said. Morales and Jacqui smiled I'm agreement.
"You are so weird." Amy said making us all laugh.
"I agree." I said making everyone laugh even more.
"It's not me. It's Faulkner. William Faulkner. Maybe my bad paraphrasing." Dale said. Amy put her cup down and stood up from around the fire.
"Where are you going?" Andrea asked her younger sister.
"I have to pee. Jeez, you try to be discreet around here." Amy said. We all broke out laughing again. Amy opened the RV door and shouted down to us. "We're out of toilet paper?" Amy said. I heard her scream and I looked behind me to see her being bit by a Walker. Everyone started screaming.
"Mom!" Carl said. I grabbed Grace and held her close to me. Jacqui walked over to us and held us close to her.
"Carl!" Lori said back. Lori held Carl close. Dad got his shotgun and cocked it getting ready to fire it.
"Jacqui, get them down! Lori, get him down!" Dad instructed them. Jacqui didn't hesitate to get us down she wanted to protect us and make sure we were safe. It's crazy to think before this started none of us knew each other but now we feel safe with them. Dad started to shoot down the walkers. But it was too late for Amy she was already bit she's running out of time to live.
"I'm right here. Shane, what do we do? Shane?" Lori said to my dad. Carl was panicking and screaming in Lori's arms. I was crying but I was still holding Grace I wasn't letting her go anytime soon. I wouldn't live with myself if she got bitten or scratched by one of those things.
"Follow me!" Dad said. Me and Grace ran over to him. Jacqui had a a baseball bat and was starting to kill walkers with it. I saw another Walker bite Amy in the neck I could hear her screaming. I started crying even more. I saw Andrea run up to her. I ran to Amy as well Grace was with Lori and Carl.
"NO! NO!" Andrea and I said. She was like my older sister they both were. Jim hit the Walker's attacking Amy.
"Oh! Oh! Oh God! Oh my God!" Andrea said. I didn't know what to do.
"Help me." Amy groaned.
"What do we do? What do we do!" I said. I was crying even more.
"Oh God, I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do." Andrea said crying. She was losing her sister and I was losing someone who was like my sister. Andrea was trying to stop the bleeding on Amy's neck. I was holding her hand to support her. We didn't leave her side. We were both sobbing because she was dying and we couldn't do anything to stop it and we couldn't shoot her in the head or stab her in the head because we want her to spend her last few moments with us alive.
~~~~

It was the morning now Amy was still alive but she was still dying slowly and painfully. Amy started gagging I held her hand tightly. She shut her eyes. S...s...She died right then and there. I was crying even harder than before. Andrea was beside herself. The worst thing was it was Amy's birthday today and she died. "Oh.  Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh, Amy." Andrea said crying.

"Amy please wake up!" I said Andrea started shaking her to try and wake her up but it didn't work she was dead and she wasn't coming back unless she comes back as a walker.
