Chapter Seven
All Katherine can think to do of is scream. She frantically puts her shirt back on and rushes up to the woman in the tattered dress, she lets out another scream as she sees her face. There's a deep cut along her forehead and the blood running down her face turns the sand scarlet.
"Help!" Katherine calls desperately hoping the boys will hear and crouches down next to the woman. "Hello? Are you okay?" She calls to afraid to touch her.
"Katherine!" She hears someone call her name and she glances up to see Jack running up to her David in tow.
"Help! I j-just found her I don't know what happened!" She said frantically. She curses herself for not knowing anything medical, she was completely useless in theses situations. Jack grabs her and pulls her away as David sets down next to the woman and presses two fingers to her neck.
"She's still alive." David whispers and Katherine doesn't even have time to wonder how he figured that out because just then the woman stirred ever so slightly. Katherine tried not to scream again as David pushed her to her back and saw her foot sticking out at an odd angle. It looked broken along with the rest of her body. "We need to stop this bleeding, and get some heat into her she's ice cold."
Jack jumped to the rescue and hoisted the woman into his arms as if she didn't weigh a thing. Katherine couldn't fathom how this woman was still alive, she had obviously been bleeding for a while. Katherine trailed behind Jack as he brought her back to Crutchie who was looking very nervous.
"What happened? Who's that?" He asked moving out of the way as Jack found his blue shirt in the bottom of the raft and tossed it to David.
"I dunno Crutch." David said pressing the shirt to her forehead.
"Can she breath?" Jack asked kneeling down next to David. David bent down and listened for something at her mouth.
"There's water in her lungs, Katherine come hold this against her forehead." David said his voice strictly business. Katherine dropped to her knees next to them and tried not to throw up as she took the cloth from David and held it firmly to her head. David apparently knew what he was doing because he made a fist and pressed it against her ribs and pushed down. She recognized it as CPR something Katherine had never learned to do, he pushed down on her a few more times to no avail. Then he did something that surprised Katherine, he grabbed the woman's face and... kissed her? It must of been true loves kiss or something because when he pulled away the woman spluttered water from her mouth and started coughing violently. David let out a sigh of relief as her eyes fluttered open looking confused, she had pretty blue eyes that looked like the summer sky.
"Are you okay?" David asked. She blinked up at him thoroughly confused, David rubbed her arm and gave her a reassuring smile. She didn't answer but she nodded and her eyes found Katherine still holding the shirt against her head. "Katherine, Jack, go and see if you can find something to start a fire with. Also look for some fresh water -if there is any- and something edible."
Katherine looked up at Jack and found that he was already starring at her. David took the shirt from Katherine and she stood up.
"O-okay." She stuttered wiping the blood on her sweats. The last thing she wanted to do was be alone with Jack but what other choice did she have? It's not like she was a certified doctor or anything. The grin on Jacks face made her uneasy but she followed him up the beach anyway, as he walked in front of her she can't help but notice how muscular he was. It was like his favorite past time was lifting trucks or something because, wow, was he fit.
"Enjoying the view?" He asks turning to look at her.
"W-what? I wasn't..." she trailed off knowing that arguing with him would be pointless. She blushes and adverts her eyes to the white sand underneath them.
"It's okay, I don't mind." He says moving to walk next to her. This makes her blush harder and she feels like she should crawl into a hole and die. She forces herself to focus on the jungle path ahead and not on his perfect chest, after all who knows what kinds of things could be lurking in the jungle.
It's considerably darker under the shade of the trees and it takes a few seconds for her eyes to adjust. Already she can tell the place is teaming with life, strange birds chirp over head and small lizards dart under there feet as they push aside giant leaves. She goes in front of Jack and scans the area in front of her searching for something that would be dry enough to light a fire with.
"Every things to green." Jack points out moving to walk next to her again.
"Yea well, it is a jungle Jack." She said not bothering to hide the annoyance from her voice. She still hasn't forgiven him for insulting her earlier and he seems to notice.
"Look, I'm sorry about what I said earlier." He said glancing over at her.
"What? For comparing me to a tool?" She asks her voice full of venom.
"Yes." He says and it sounded like the most serious thing she had heard him say in all the time she had known him. For some reason she feels herself forgiving him.
After a while of searching for wood they stumble upon a sight that brought tears to Katherine's eyes. (and not just because it was beautiful.) Fresh water poured into a river from a small rocky water fall making the water under it turn white from bubbles. The sound alone is enough to convince Katherine she was going to be okay.
"Well would ya look at that." Jack mused he too enjoying the sight.
"I'm not going to die." Katherine said with a sigh. Jack suddenly grabbed her arm and pointed to something across the river.
"You ain't gonna die, an neither is the rest of us."
Below a palm tree four coconuts were scattered around just waiting to be picked up. She could of hugged Jack from all the joy she was in from seeing food but she held herself back. He didn't need another reason to touch her.
"Ya know," Jack says following her as she starts making her way around the small river. "When this is all over an we's get back ta the real world I know a good place that sells the best sandwiches in the world." He says and she can hear him coming up closer to her.
"What make you so sure we will make it out of here?" She asks trying to sound nonchalant. Was he really asking her out now?
"A guy can hope." He says his voice quieter than before. She glances back at him but in doing so she looses her footing and she slips. His arms are around her waist steading her before she can hit the ground. She try's to ignore the mini bang that just went off inside her chest as she feels one of his hands press against her stomach.
"S-sorry." She says pulling away from him a blush creeping on to her cheeks.
"Ya good, I'm jus' glad to be of service." He says as she starts climbing her way down to the edge of the water. He's close behind her again and she can feel the sting of her skin from where he touched her. "Watch your step on those rocks or you may find yourself in the water."
"Thanks" she mutters stepping out on to a rock.
"Although, I'se wouldn't complain if ya got that shirt wet again." He says smirking and she almost does fall in by that comment. She glared at the rocks ahead of her and quickly makes her way across the short distance and dosent even bother to wait for Jack when she reaches the other side.
"Awe come on Kathy." She hears him complain as he jogs up to catch her. "You have to admit that was a pretty good one."
"I don't have to admit anything." She says stubbornly as she reaches the first coconut. There's only four so she grabs two and leaves the rest for Jack to pick up, she turns around with the purpose of getting away from him as fast as possible. Her plan is stopped however when Jack steps in front of her blocking her path back to the trees, she glares at his perfect chest.
"Where you runnin'?" He asks a hand on her hip.
"Stop it Jack, we have a list of things to do tonight." She says trying not to loose her cool.
"But your on my list of things to do tonight." He says coming closer to her. That comment makes her blush and her heart rate quicken but she forces herself to keep her hands to herself. Much unlike Jack was going at the moment.
"Remember when I told you you would die if you touched me again?" She asked her voice low and threatening. The hand going under her shirt froze and it looked like he was seriously considering her words. Reluctantly he pulled away from her and stepped back. She felt her body relax and she tightened her grip on the fruit in her arms. Without saying a word Jack picked up the other two and turned to face her, his usual ocean blue eyes had turned the shade of the water running behind her, grey and silky. They didn't speak the rest of the way back to the beach but Katherine could feel his steady gaze on her body as they made there way back. She tried not to be very aware of the fact she could still feel his hand print under her shirt but it was very hard. The weird mini bang that had started in her chest seemed to be growing into something more, and the thought terrified her.
By the time they got back to David, Crutchie and the woman everyone was looking more relaxed. The blonde woman looked fast asleep and her pale face looked more colorful than it had been earlier.
"Hey look it's Jack and Katherine!" Crutchie said waving from his spot next to David.
"And they found food, awesome." David added as they stopped next to them.
"Is she going to be okay?" Katherine asked setting the coconuts down on the sand.
"Yes, she's lost a lot of blood and her ankle is broken but I think she will live." David said glancing down at her foot which was wrapped up in a strip of his shirt.
"Who is she?" Jack asked setting his own fruit down.
"Her name is Clara, and I have no idea how she is still alive."
